Squirrels and mice: the first week is the dangerous one
Unlike daffodils, crocus corms are perfectly palatable and squirrels, mice and voles all eat them. The classic experience is planting a hundred corms in the autumn, coming out three days later and finding the bed excavated, with shallow scrapes, scattered soil and papery corm skins lying about. Nothing flowers in the spring.
The trigger is visual. Freshly dug soil in a garden where a squirrel is already caching nuts is an obvious place to investigate, and once it finds one corm it works through the rest methodically. This means the defense is largely about the first fortnight after planting, before rain and frost have settled the surface back to looking like everywhere else.
Firm the ground hard after planting, clear away every loose skin and broken corm fragment, water the bed in, and put back whatever mulch or leaf litter was on the surface before. Do not leave the empty net bags or a tidy heap of soil beside the bed either. Where squirrels are persistent, half-inch to one-inch wire mesh pegged over the planting is the only complete answer; leave it there over winter and take it up in late winter before shoots start growing through it.
Planting deeper is the low-maintenance alternative. Four to five inches (10-13 cm) puts the corms below the depth at which a squirrel casually digs, and crocus tolerate it without complaint. It will not stop a determined animal that has already located the patch, but it prevents most opportunistic raids and it needs nothing from you afterwards. For a large naturalised planting where netting is impractical, depth is the method to use.
Mice and voles are a winter problem rather than an autumn one, tunneling under mulch and taking corms from below. Keep mulch pulled back an inch or two from the crowns and avoid leaving deep loose material over the planting, which is what makes tunneling comfortable.
Birds shred the flowers, especially the yellow ones
Sparrows and other small birds tear open crocus flowers, leaving the petals in narrow strips around the clump. It looks like vandalism because it more or less is; the birds are not eating much. The damage is done in bright, still weather when the flowers are wide open, often within a single morning, and it does not harm the corm at all.
The striking pattern is the color preference. Yellow crocus are attacked far more heavily than purple or white ones, to the point where a mixed planting will often show every yellow flower destroyed and the others beside them untouched. If your garden has this problem year after year, shifting the balance of a planting towards purples and whites is more effective than any deterrent you can put over the top.
Where you want to protect a particular patch, black cotton thread run between short sticks a few inches above the flowers is the traditional method and it does work. Use cotton rather than nylon, which can entangle birds. Do not bother until you have actually seen damage, because many gardens are never troubled.
Working out what you are looking at
Crocus problems present as a small set of symptoms, and the practical skill is separating a cosmetic nuisance from something that has already destroyed the corm underground. Identify the symptom first, then act.

Rot is what kills established colonies
Once a colony has survived its first autumn, the thing most likely to end it is not an animal but water. Corms rot in ground that stays wet through the summer dormancy, and the loss is invisible until nothing comes up the following spring. Beds that are irrigated for summer bedding, low spots that puddle, and heavy clay that never dries are all places where crocus quietly disappear over three or four years.
The fix is drainage rather than treatment. Work coarse grit into the planting area, put a handful under each corm on heavy soil, and move the colony to a raised bed, a bank or the base of a wall if the ground genuinely holds water. Rot that has already started cannot be cured; lift and destroy affected corms, do not compost them, and do not replant crocus into that exact spot.
Storage rot and dry rot are the same problem seen out of the ground. A corm that goes soft and smells sour was stored damp; one that goes light and hollow with a dusty interior was stored too warm. Both are avoidable with a cool, dry, airy shelf and a monthly look through the bag.
What to record about losses
Write down every failure with its location and the evidence. A note saying that the group under the apple tree was dug up within four days of planting, while the group by the path survived untouched, is worth more than any general advice about squirrels, because it tells you exactly which part of your own garden needs netting next autumn.
Record which method you used where. Netted, planted deep, or neither; that comparison across a single autumn settles the question for your garden permanently. Note the date you first saw shredded flowers, and the colors involved, and note any patch that produced leaves but no flowers so you can lift it in the summer and find out whether the corms are congested or gone.
