This orchid wants far more light than a moth orchid
Cymbidiums come from the cool foothills of the Himalayas and the mountains of east Asia, where they grow in leaf litter and rock crevices in bright, open positions rather than deep under a canopy. That is a completely different life from a moth orchid clinging to a shaded trunk in a warm lowland forest, and it is why the two plants want opposite treatment. A cymbidium kept in the gentle light that suits a phalaenopsis will look healthy, put out fat green leaves, and never flower.
The leaves tell you whether the light is right. A well-lit cymbidium has stiff, upright, slightly yellow-green foliage that arches rather than flops. A plant in shade has soft, floppy, dark blue-green leaves that lie down over the edge of the pot. Dark green is not a sign of health in this genus; it is the single most common reason a healthy-looking plant refuses to spike. Aim for a color close to a ripe lime rather than a spinach leaf.
Indoors, that means the brightest window in the house and as close to the glass as the plant will fit, ideally with a few hours of direct sun outside the middle of the day. In practice no ordinary window supplies enough light through a whole growing season, which is why the summer outdoors below is not an optional refinement. It is how the plant earns the energy for a spike.
Summer outdoors: the part that does the work
From the point where nights stay reliably above 45F (7C) in spring until the first frost threatens in autumn, a cymbidium belongs outside. Outdoor light in shade is still several times brighter than the best indoor windowsill, and the moving air keeps the foliage dry and the pot from souring. A plant that spends the summer outside builds fat pseudobulbs; a plant that spends it on a windowsill builds thin ones, and thin pseudobulbs do not flower.
Put it where it gets morning sun and shade through the hottest part of the afternoon, or under the light shade of a tree or a piece of shade cloth cutting roughly a third of the sun. Do not move it straight from a winter room into full midday sun. Leaves grown indoors burn in a single afternoon, showing up as dry white or black papery patches that never heal. Give it two weeks in full shade first, then a couple of hours of morning sun, then its summer position.
Stand the pot on a hard surface, on feet or a slab rather than directly on soil, so slugs and worms cannot get in through the drainage holes. Cymbidiums are tall and top-heavy in leaf, and heavier still once a spike is up, so an exposed spot needs the pot wedged into a heavier outer container or tied to a stake. A pot blown over in a summer storm snaps leaves off at the base and cracks pseudobulbs.
Move it out in stages and watch the leaves for the first week. Faint red or bronze flushing across the upper leaf surface is the plant acclimatizing and is fine. Bleached cream patches with a dry, papery feel are sunburn, and mean it needs another layer of shade immediately.
Autumn cold nights: what actually sets the flower spikes
The trigger for flowering is not day length and not fertilizer. It is a run of cold nights in late summer and autumn combined with warm days, so that the plant experiences a swing of roughly 20F (11C) between afternoon and dawn. Nights in the range of 45F to 55F (7C to 13C), with days in the 70s F (low 20s C), held for four to six weeks, initiate spikes at the base of the newest mature pseudobulbs. Nights that never drop below 60F (15C) initiate nothing.
This is the single most common reason a cymbidium never blooms indoors, and it is also the easiest to fix: leave the plant outside well into autumn. Do not bring it in when the evenings first turn chilly. That chill is the point. Keep it out until frost is genuinely forecast, and only then move it under cover. Many people lose a whole season by rescuing the plant a month too early out of kindness.
Cymbidiums tolerate far more cold than most orchids. Brief dips to around 30F (minus 1C) do no harm to the foliage of an established plant, though open flowers and soft new spikes are damaged well before the leaves are. If a light frost is forecast and spikes are already up, move the plant into a porch or garage overnight and put it straight back out the next morning rather than ending the cold treatment altogether.

Winter indoors: cool and bright, never beside a radiator
The winter position is the opposite of what most houseplants get. A cymbidium wants the coldest bright room in the house: an unheated spare bedroom, a porch, a stairwell window, a conservatory that stays above freezing. Nights around 50F to 55F (10C to 13C) hold the buds steady and make the open flowers last two to three months. A plant in a warm living room at 70F (21C) drops buds, and any flowers that do open are over in three weeks.
Keep it well away from radiators, wood burners and heating vents. Dry rising heat is what causes bud blast, where swelling buds yellow at the stalk and fall off one by one from the bottom of the spike upwards. The same happens in a room with a gas appliance or a bowl of ripening fruit, because ethylene in the air makes buds abort. Once a spike is showing buds, settle the plant in its final position and stop moving it.
Light matters as much in winter as in summer, because the plant is still filling the spike from its leaves. Give it the brightest glass you have. Winter sun will not burn cymbidium foliage in any latitude where the plant needs to come indoors at all, so there is no reason to shade it at this time of year.
Fixing a plant that has been kept indoors for years
A cymbidium that has lived on a warm windowsill for several years is usually large, dark green, floppy and completely flowerless. It is not sick and it does not need feeding harder. It needs a full outdoor season. Put it out in spring and treat that year as a rebuilding year: the growths made in the shade cannot be improved, but the new ones will come up thicker and stiffer, and it is those that carry the following autumn's spikes.
Expect the change to take one full cycle. Spikes come from a pseudobulb that matured over the previous summer, so the reward for putting the plant out this spring arrives in the autumn after the growths harden, with flowers opening the following winter. Give it two seasons before you conclude anything is wrong with the plant itself.
Write down when the plant went outside, when it came in, and the lowest night temperature it actually sat through in autumn. That short record is worth more than any general rule, because it tells you next year whether a failure to spike came from too little light, too little cold, or simply moving the plant indoors three weeks too soon.
