The caterpillars are the point, not the problem
The most alarming thing most gardeners find on dill is a fat green caterpillar banded with black and marked with yellow or orange dots, chewing its way steadily through the fronds. This is a swallowtail butterfly larva, and dill is one of its main host plants along with fennel, parsley and carrot. Poke it and it everts a forked orange horn behind its head and gives off a sharp citrus smell.
Leave them. A single plant will feed two or three caterpillars to full size and recover, and you are getting one of the largest and most spectacular butterflies in the garden for the cost of some foliage. If you genuinely need the leaf, move the caterpillars onto a plant you are letting flower rather than killing them.
The practical response is to plant more dill than you need. A short extra row sown specifically as a host plant costs almost nothing and takes the pressure off the plants you are cutting from. This is also a good reason never to spray dill with a broad-spectrum insecticide.
A young swallowtail larva is small, brown and white and looks convincingly like a bird dropping. Do not scrape those off as dirt. They become the large green caterpillar within about two weeks.
Aphids, and why not to spray
Aphids are the one pest that does real damage. They cluster on the growing tips and in the developing flower heads, distorting the new growth and leaving sticky honeydew that black sooty mold grows on. Populations build fastest on plants that were fed too much nitrogen and on plants under drought stress, which is another reason to keep dill lean and evenly watered.
Dill flowers attract hoverflies, lacewings and parasitic wasps in large numbers, and those predators will clear an aphid colony in one to two weeks if you let them. Spraying, even with soap, kills the predators and the aphid eggs of the next generation survive, so you end up in a cycle of spraying every ten days.
For an infestation you cannot wait out, knock the colonies off with a firm jet of water every second day for a week, or cut off the two or three worst-affected tips and bin them. Both work without removing the beneficial insects.

Damping off and root rot: the same underlying fault
Both of these are soil moisture problems rather than infections you catch by bad luck. Damping off kills seedlings, which topple over with a pinched, water-soaked spot right at soil level, and it always follows a combination of cold, wet soil and a stand that was sown too thickly to dry out between waterings. Root rot does the same thing to older plants: the taproot sits in airless wet ground, the base of the stem goes dark and soft, and the plant wilts in the middle of the day even though the soil is visibly damp.
The fixes are structural. Sow thinly enough that air moves between the seedlings, thin at the first true leaf rather than waiting, water in the morning so the surface dries by evening, and on heavy ground raise the bed three or four inches (8 to 10 cm) so the taproot is never standing in water. Dill on lean, free-draining soil almost never gets either problem.
Once a plant has stem rot at the base there is no recovery, because the damage is on the single taproot the whole plant depends on. Pull it, do not compost it, and do not re-sow into that exact spot the same season.
Family diseases and rotation
Dill shares diseases with carrot, parsnip, celery, parsley and fennel. The leaf spots and blights that move through a carrot bed will move into dill and back again, and the spores overwinter on crop debris left in the soil. Keep at least three years between umbellifers on the same ground, and clear old dill stems away in autumn rather than digging them in.
Self-seeding quietly breaks that rotation, because the volunteers come up in last year's dill bed. If you have had disease problems, hoe off volunteers in the affected area and start a deliberate sowing somewhere else. If you have not, volunteers are usually fine and worth keeping.
Watch the lower leaves for the first small brown spots with pale margins. Caught at that stage, removing the affected lower foliage and switching to watering at the base often holds it back long enough to get the harvest. Once the spots have reached the flower stems, the plant is finished.
- Water the soil, not the plant Leaf spot and mildew both need wet foliage. Water at the base in the morning and keep overhead watering off the plants entirely once they are past the seedling stage.
- Clear debris at the end of the season Pull and remove old stems rather than turning them in. Umbellifer disease spores survive on that debris and infect the next crop from below.
- Keep a bed map Note which bed grew dill, carrots, parsnips or parsley each year. Umbellifers are easy to lose track of because several of them are grown in small quantities in odd corners.
- Record the first date you see each problem Write down when aphids first appeared, when the first leaf spot showed and where. In the second season those dates let you act a week before the trouble starts instead of a week after.
