Fish Mint Problems: Spread, Rot, Reversion and Pests

Almost nothing eats fish mint. The real hazards are the plant escaping into open ground, crown rot in stagnant wet, and the variegated form reverting to plain green.

The plant itself is the main hazard

Pests and diseases barely trouble this plant. The problems that actually cost gardeners time are the spread of the rhizomes, rot at the crown in stagnant conditions, and the loss of variegation, in that order of seriousness.

The spread is the one that cannot be undone by next season. Rhizomes travel under paving slabs, under gravel paths, under low walls and along the line of a fence, and they surface several feet from where you planted, often in a neighboring bed or on the other side of a boundary. Because they are brittle and full of dormant buds, digging usually leaves fragments behind and each fragment becomes a plant, so a single dig often produces more shoots the following year than there were before.

Catching an escape early

An escape found in its first season is a ten minute job. The same escape found in its third season is a project. The whole difference is in looking regularly for isolated shoots away from the parent plant.

  1. Look in spring, when shoots are small Walk the ground within a couple of yards (2 m) of the container or barrier before other plants leaf up. Single heart-shaped shoots with a reddish stem base are easy to see against bare soil.
  2. Trace the rhizome back by hand Scrape the soil away along the shoot and follow the white rhizome towards its source rather than pulling the shoot. Pulling snaps it and leaves the run in place.
  3. Lift the whole run if you can Ease the rhizome out along its full length, working from the far end back towards the parent. Every inch you leave carries buds.
  4. Find the exit point Follow the run back until you reach the pot, the barrier or the paving edge it came through. Blocking that route stops the next three escapes.
  5. Mark the spot and check it twice more Note the location and look at it again in midsummer and the following spring. Fragments you missed show up as new shoots on the same line.

Do not use a rotavator, a hoe or a fork anywhere near fish mint. Chopping the rhizomes distributes them and turns one colony into dozens.

Clearing a colony that is already established

This is a multi-season job and it is best approached knowing that in advance. Most attempts fail because the gardener digs once, sees regrowth, and concludes nothing works.

The method that does work is exhaustion rather than extraction. Cut or pull every shoot the moment it reaches two or three leaves, every time, through the whole growing season. The rhizome has to spend reserves to produce each shoot, and if no shoot is ever allowed to photosynthesise the reserves fall. Expect meaningful reduction in the second year and near clearance in the third or fourth.

Excluding light helps considerably. Cut the growth to the ground, cover the area with opaque sheeting weighted at the edges and extended at least a yard (1 m) beyond the visible patch, and leave it in place for two full growing seasons. Rhizomes run out from under the edge, so patrol the perimeter and pull anything that emerges.

Rot, scorch and the minor pests

Crown rot is the only disease likely to kill a plant outright, and it happens in containers where the base has been sealed against rhizomes and no side drainage was provided. The stem bases blacken and the clump collapses in wet weather. Open drainage holes in the sides an inch (3 cm) above the base, tip out any standing saucer water in cold weather, and thin the clump so air moves through it.

Slugs and snails graze the soft spring shoots and leave ragged holes, but the plant grows faster than they eat and no treatment is needed. Rust and leaf spot appear on crowded foliage in a wet season: cut the clump to three inches (8 cm), remove every leaf from the site, and the regrowth comes clean.

Leaf scorch, seen as brown crisp margins from midsummer, is simply too much direct sun or soil that dried out. It does not spread and it does not harm the rhizomes, but it will not recover on the affected leaves, so cut back and move the container into shade.

The strong smell is released far more powerfully by cutting, strimming and mowing than by the intact plant. Warn anyone else working in the garden before you cut a large clump.

Keep a record of the spread

The single most useful thing to write down is where each stray shoot appeared and on what date. After two seasons the notes show the direction of travel and the exit point, which is nearly always one drainage hole, one overhanging stem or one gap in a barrier. Fixing that one route does more than any amount of digging.

Record also the date you started any clearance program and the number of shoots you pulled each month. Watching that count fall is what keeps a two or three year exhaustion program going, because the progress is invisible above ground until quite late.
