Overview
Diamond is an early to mid-season open-pollinated eggplant from Ukraine. Plants of 20 to 25 inches bear dark purple fruit 6 to 9 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide in clusters of 4 to 6, with glossy skin and firm, white, mild flesh. Being open-pollinated, it lets you save seed that comes true. Start seed indoors 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting into rich, free-draining, slightly acid ground in full sun after the last frost; in hot regions a late-summer planting gives a fall crop. Pick when the skin shines and the fruit yields a little to pressure; dull skin means seedy, bitter flesh.
