Overview
Louisiana Long Green is an early regional heirloom from the Gulf South, producing glossy light green fruit about 9 inches long with tender, mild, white flesh very low in bitterness. Unlike purple types, ripeness shows as a pale, creamy green to yellow-green skin. Generations of Louisiana gardeners kept it for its heat tolerance and steady production through long, hot summers, and for frying, grilling and the local eggplant dressing. Start indoors 8 to 10 weeks before transplanting into fertile, slightly acidic soil in full sun; in hot regions a second August planting extends the season. Harvest at 8 to 10 inches while slightly shiny.
