Overview
Turkish Orange, also known as Turkish Italian Orange, is an heirloom from Turkey with bushy plants of 18 to 48 inches carrying 15 to 25 round, egg-shaped fruit of 2 to 3 inches that ripen from green to brilliant orange, looking more like small tomatoes than eggplant. Pick at the green stage for the mildest flavor, or at orange for a sweeter, slightly acidic, more complex taste; the skin may show mottling by then. The plants resist insects and are ornamental enough to draw questions from visitors. Start indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting to full sun. The round shape suits hollowing and stuffing in the Turkish style.
