Overview
Beatrice is an early-season Italian hybrid in the style of Rosa Bianca, but it matures sooner and the color is brighter. The fruit is round, 3 to 4 inches by 5 inches, with a bright violet skin, and the flesh is dense, mild and low in bitterness. Start seed indoors six to eight weeks ahead of the last frost and transplant into full sun when the soil has warmed and frost is no longer a risk at night. Even watering and a layer of mulch keep the thin skin from toughening. Expect first fruit around 62 days. Beatrice earns its place both for its looks and for a tender texture when roasted or grilled.
