Slugs, the defining pest of this crop
The dense, overlapping rosette of an endive plant is close to ideal slug habitat: dark, permanently humid, sheltered from birds, and made of exactly the soft leaf they prefer. They move down into the heart during the day and feed at night without ever leaving the plant. This is why endive slug damage so often appears out of nowhere at harvest, when you cut a head open and find the middle grazed to lace and fouled.
Nothing applied to the outside of the plant reaches them once they are inside. Pellets scattered on the soil work on slugs that are traveling in, not on the resident population. The whole strategy has to be about keeping the heart from becoming attractive in the first place and catching the slugs before the rosette closes.
Check the crown by torchlight two or three nights a week from the point the plants are half grown, and part the leaves with your fingers. Removing five slugs by hand at that stage saves more heads than any amount of treatment later. It is worth doing this immediately before you blanch a plant, because sealing a slug inside a covered head under a plate for a fortnight guarantees the loss of that head.
- Clear the ground around the crown Pull weeds, remove fallen leaves and pull back mulch an inch (2.5 cm) from the stem. Slugs shelter within a few inches of where they feed, and removing the daytime shelter cuts the population reaching the plant.
- Torch the bed at night Go out an hour after dark twice a week with a torch and collect what you find on and around the plants. Wet nights after rain give the biggest catch and are the most worthwhile.
- Part the heart before blanching Open the center with your fingers and look right down into it in daylight. Remove any slug, egg cluster or slime trail you find before the cover goes on.
- Water at the base and in the morning Evening overhead watering leaves the whole plant wet through the hours slugs are active. Watering the soil in the morning gives you dry foliage by nightfall.
- Trap along the row Sink shallow containers of beer at soil level between plants, or lay boards on the soil and turn them each morning. Both concentrate the population somewhere you can deal with it.
Rots: the price of trapped water
Two rots account for most losses. Bottom rot begins where the lowest leaves lie in contact with wet soil and works up into the crown, showing first as a brown, water-soaked band at the leaf base. Gray mold takes hold on damaged or dying tissue and spreads through the heart, appearing as a fuzzy gray coating with a distinctly musty smell. Both need still, saturated air, and both are far more likely under a blanching cover.
Neither is worth treating once established in a head. The response is to cut the affected plant immediately, strip back to sound tissue, use what is good and take the rest right out of the garden rather than leaving it on the bed. A rotting head left standing seeds the whole row.
Prevention is the entire game: full spacing so air moves between plants, watering at the base only, removing yellowing outer leaves every fortnight, growing on a ridge if the ground is heavy, and never covering a wet plant for blanching. Do those five things and rot becomes an occasional loss rather than the reason the crop failed.

Aphids, leaf miner and the smaller nuisances
Aphids colonise the center of endive because it is sheltered, and by the time the heart has closed you cannot reach them. Deal with them while the rosette is still open by turning a firm jet of water into the middle of the plant on a sunny morning so it dries quickly. Ants running up and down the stem are a reliable early sign that a colony is established below the leaves you can see.
Leaf miner leaves pale winding tunnels between the upper and lower surfaces of a leaf. It is cosmetic on outer leaves and simply removed with them, but it is worth covering a late sowing with fine insect mesh for the first four weeks, when the seedlings have few leaves to spare. Fix the mesh edges down properly; a gap at the soil is an invitation.
Tipburn, a brown drying of the margins on the young central leaves, is not a disease at all but a symptom of uneven water supply during hearting. It cannot be reversed. It is entirely prevented by not letting the bed dry out through the weeks when the heart is filling.
Do not grow endive in the same bed as any other chicory relative two seasons running. Bottom rot and gray mold both persist in soil and on crop debris, and a three-year gap breaks the cycle more reliably than anything you can spray.
Keeping a record that finds the pattern
Log the date you first see each problem, which plants in the row it affected, and what the weather had been doing for the week before. Endive problems cluster: rot appears after a particular wet spell, slugs after a warm damp night, aphids after a late feed. A single line per event is enough to make that clustering visible.
Marking the affected plants by position matters as much as the date. Rot that always begins at the same end of a bed is a drainage problem you can fix with a ridge or a different bed next year, and no amount of general care will address it. Two seasons of position notes turn a run of bad luck into a decision about where to plant.
