Enkianthus Care: Sun for the Color, Shade for the Roots

Enkianthus gives the best autumn color of any shrub in its class, but only in sun, and its shallow roots want a cool moist run. Resolving that contradiction is what growing it well actually means.

The contradiction you have to solve

Two facts about this shrub pull in opposite directions, and almost every disappointing enkianthus is a plant where one of them was ignored. The first is that the scarlet and orange autumn color is built from pigments the leaf only makes when it has been in strong light all summer. A plant in real shade turns a dull yellow and drops, and no amount of feeding or watering changes that. The second is that the roots are fine, fibrous and sit in the top six to eight inches (15 to 20 cm) of soil, where they cook and dry in an exposed sunny bed.

The answer is not a compromise position halfway between sun and shade. It is to give the canopy sun and the root run shade, which are different things and can be arranged separately. A plant with its head in the open and its feet under a deep permanent mulch, or in the light shadow cast by low planting around it, gets both. In cool-summer climates you can simply plant in full sun. Where afternoons run above 85F (30C), give it sun until early afternoon and shade from the worst heat, and accept slightly less intense color in exchange for leaves that are still on the plant to color at all.

Sun matters for color but wind does not help it. An open sunny site that is also exposed to drying wind will scorch leaf margins in midsummer and those leaves never color properly. Sun plus shelter is the target.

Acid soil, and the yellowing that follows when you do not have it

Enkianthus belongs to the Ericaceae and feeds exactly the way a rhododendron does. It wants soil between pH 4.5 and 5.5. In that range the roots take up iron and manganese easily and the summer foliage is a clean blue-green. Above about pH 6.0 both nutrients lock into forms the plant cannot absorb, even where the soil holds plenty of them, and the shrub goes yellow while standing in apparently good ground.

The pattern is specific enough to diagnose by eye. The leaf blade fades to pale yellow while the veins stay narrow and dark green, so the leaf reads as a green net over a yellow background. It appears on the newest leaves at the shoot tips first, because iron does not move around inside the plant and the youngest growth is served last. Yellowing that is uniform across the whole leaf, veins included, and starts on the oldest leaves low down, is a different fault: shortage of nitrogen, or roots sitting in water.

Test the soil every second or third year, especially if your tap water is hard or if there is mortar, concrete or limestone rubble anywhere near the root run. Old building lines under a lawn quietly raise pH for decades. Correct a mildly alkaline soil with elemental sulfur worked into the top layer, and expect a full season before the reading moves.

Water, because these roots do not recover from drying

The fine root mass sits shallow and has no reserve. A rhododendron will sulk after a dry spell and come back; an enkianthus that is allowed to go properly dry in midsummer responds by browning its leaf margins, then dropping leaves from the inside of the plant outwards, and the shoots that were carrying next year's flower buds at their tips are often the ones lost. You pay for one dry fortnight at the height of summer with a thin display the following spring.

Water by volume, not by frequency. A soaking that wets the whole root plate to a depth of eight inches (20 cm), given when the top two inches (5 cm) have dried, beats a daily sprinkle every time, because a light watering only wets the mulch and encourages roots to sit even shallower. On an established plant in the ground that usually means a thorough soak once a week through any dry summer spell, and rather more in a container.

Rainwater is better than tap water anywhere the mains supply is hard, since dissolved calcium raises the pH of the root zone over time and produces exactly the chlorosis described above. If you can only water from the tap, mulch heavily, top up with collected rainwater when you have it, and test the soil more often than you otherwise would.

  1. Check the soil, not the calendar Push a finger through the mulch into the soil beneath. If the top two inches (5 cm) are dry, water. If they are damp, leave it. The mulch surface always looks dry and tells you nothing.
  2. Soak slowly and deeply Deliver roughly two gallons (8 liters) per square yard (square meter) of root spread, slowly enough that none runs off. A hose left trickling for ten minutes at the base does more than five minutes of spraying the foliage.
  3. Water the whole spread, not the stem The working roots are out under the edge of the canopy, not against the trunk. Move the hose around the drip line rather than pouring everything into one spot by the main stem.
  4. Keep the mulch at three inches (8 cm) Composted bark, pine needles or leafmould, spread over the whole root spread but pulled back an inch or two from the stem itself. Top it up every spring as it breaks down.
  5. Never cultivate around it A hoe or a fork through the top few inches cuts the roots the plant depends on. Suppress weeds with the mulch and pull by hand anything that comes through.
  6. Go into winter with moist soil A dry autumn followed by a cold winter is what kills flower buds. Water thoroughly after leaf fall if the season has been dry, before the ground freezes.

Feeding, and why less is better

This is not a hungry shrub. One application of a slow-release ericaceous fertilizer as the buds begin to move in spring covers a whole year on decent soil, and on ground that is genuinely acid and well mulched you can often skip even that. Leafmould or composted bark laid on as mulch feeds it slowly and improves the moisture-holding of the surface layer at the same time, which matters more here than the nutrients do.

Heavy nitrogen is actively harmful. It buys long soft shoots at the expense of flower buds, delays the wood hardening so that early frost damages the tips, and washes out the autumn color, because a leaf still full of nitrogen late in the season stays green and then goes brown rather than red. If your enkianthus grows strongly and flowers poorly, look at the lawn feed drifting into the bed before anything else. Never use garden lime, mushroom compost or any general fertilizer containing lime near it.

What to write down

The useful record for this shrub is short and it is about timing. Note the date the flower bells open, the date the last of them browns, and the date in autumn when the leaves reach full color. Those three dates shift by only a few days from year to year in a given garden, and once you have two seasons of them you know exactly when your pruning window opens and closes without having to watch the plant daily.

Also record the soil pH with the date of the test and where in the bed you took the sample, plus any week in summer when the plant went dry and how the autumn color looked that year. A single pH reading is a number; three over five years is a trend, and a trend drifting upward tells you to act before the leaves go yellow rather than afterwards.

If you grow more than one enkianthus, keep the notes per plant with a rough position sketch. Two shrubs ten feet (3 m) apart can sit on quite different soil, and the one that yellows first is telling you something about that spot.
