Windthrow is the big one
A eucalyptus left to grow as a tree gets tall very quickly and builds a wide, shallow plate of roots rather than a deep anchor. Add saturated winter ground and a gale, and the whole plate lifts. This is the single most serious risk the plant poses, and it is entirely a consequence of two decisions made years earlier: letting it grow unchecked, and staking it so long that the trunk never developed taper.
The warning signs are worth knowing. Look for the soil cracking or lifting in an arc on the windward side of the trunk, a plant whose lean has increased noticeably within one season, or a trunk that is the same thickness at chest height as it is at the base. Any of those on a tall plant near a building means the plant needs professional attention, not a stake.
The prevention is simple and belongs to the first two years: plant small, remove the stake after one season, and either commit to coppicing on a one to two year cycle or site the plant far enough from anything it could fall on.
Root rot and winter wet
Eucalyptus is drought tolerant and is not wet tolerant. Ground that stays saturated through the cold months causes root death that shows up above ground as sudden wilting of an apparently healthy plant, often in one branch first and then the whole thing within a few weeks. There is no treatment once it has gone that far.
The mistakes that cause it are consistent: planting into a hole dug in heavy clay so it acts as a sump, over-watering an established plant out of habit, leaving a container standing in a full saucer, or piling mulch against the stem so the bark stays permanently damp. Correcting any of these is easy before the fact and impossible after.
If you suspect wet feet on a young plant, scrape a little soil away from the base and look at the bark at ground level. Healthy bark is firm and dry; rot shows as darkened, soft, sometimes sour-smelling tissue at the collar.
Leaf symptoms and what they mean
Eucalyptus leaves tell you most of what you need to know, but several very different problems look superficially similar. Working through the pattern of which leaves are affected, and where on the leaf, gets you to the cause faster than treating for pests you have not confirmed.

Insects: mostly cosmetic
Sap-sucking insects find eucalyptus, and on a vigorous plant they rarely matter. Sticky honeydew and the black sooty mold that grows on it are the visible result, and both wash off with a strong jet of water. Chewing beetles notch the leaf edges and look worse than they are. A plant growing three feet (0.9 m) a year outruns this kind of damage without help.
The time to act is when a young or recently planted specimen is heavily infested and is not putting on growth, since that plant does not have the vigor to outgrow the pressure. Even then, the correct move is usually to improve the growing conditions and, if you coppice, to take the cut, which removes almost the entire pest population with the top growth in one operation.
Insecticides are a poor fit here. The plant is often large, the pests are often sheltered under waxy coverings, and repeat spraying of a fast-growing plant is a losing exercise.
- Confirm what is actually there Turn a few leaves over and look. Sticky leaves alone are not an identification. Distinguishing sucking insects from chewing damage decides whether anything is worth doing at all.
- Judge whether the plant is losing Compare this season's shoot extension to last season's. A plant still making strong growth is winning and needs nothing. A stalled plant with heavy infestation needs the conditions checked first.
- Wash, then prune Hose honeydew and sooty mold off with plain water. Cut out individual stems that are badly encrusted and bin them rather than composting them.
- Use the coppice cut as control If the plant is on a cutting cycle, take the hard cut at the normal time. Removing all the top growth removes the population, and the regrowth comes back clean.
Do not fertilize a stressed or infested eucalyptus in the hope of pushing it through. Soft nitrogen-fed growth is exactly what sap-sucking insects breed fastest on, and phosphorus damages this genus directly.
Cold damage
Hardiness varies widely across the genus and a plant that sails through one winter can be cut back to the ground by a colder one. Damage shows as brown, dry, brittle shoot tips and, in a bad case, split bark near the base. Resist cutting immediately: wait until growth restarts and you can see where live buds are breaking, because the live wood often extends higher than the browning suggests.
A plant killed to the ground frequently resprouts from the base, especially if it has been coppiced before and has a developed stool. Give it until midsummer before deciding it is dead. Young plants in their first winter are the vulnerable ones, which is another argument for planting early in the season so the plant has months of root growth behind it before cold arrives.
Keep a record of what appeared and when
Note the date you first see any symptom, which part of the plant it started on and what the weather had been doing for the previous fortnight. Most eucalyptus problems are weather-driven, and one season of paired notes tells you whether your site's issue is winter wet, summer drought or cold.
For a tall plant, add an annual note on trunk lean and on whether the soil at the base is disturbed. That is a two-minute check once a year, and it is the one that catches a windthrow risk while there is still time to do something about it.
