The sap is not an inconvenience. It is the main risk
Every succulent euphorbia bleeds a thick white latex the moment any part of it is cut, snapped, scraped or knocked over. That latex is genuinely caustic. On skin it produces a burning rash that often does not appear for several hours, so people rub their forearm, feel nothing, and carry on working. In an eye it is an emergency: it causes severe pain, swelling and corneal damage, and permanent loss of sight has been recorded from a single splash. Treat it with the seriousness you would give a strong drain cleaner, because in practical terms that is what you are handling.
The sap is under pressure. A cut stem does not ooze, it squirts, and it can travel a foot or more in an arc you did not plan for. This is why eye protection is not optional and why hands alone are not enough. If you take one thing from this page, take this: never cut, prune, repot or move a large plant without gloves and something over your eyes.
- Glove up and cover your eyes first Nitrile or rubber gloves, long sleeves, and wraparound glasses or goggles. Ordinary spectacles leave the sides open, which is exactly where an arc of sap arrives from. Put these on before you pick up the knife, not after the first cut.
- Cut cleanly and step back Use a sharp blade, make one decisive cut, and move your face away immediately. A sawing cut squeezes far more sap out than a single clean pass, and a blunt blade crushes tissue that then bleeds for much longer.
- Seal the cut with cold water Run or spray cold water over the cut face until the flow stops, usually within a minute or two. Cold water congeals the latex and closes the wound. Warm water keeps it running. Do this on both halves: the plant and the piece you removed.
- Blot and dispose carefully Dab the sealed cut with kitchen paper and bin the paper straight away. Do not wipe it on your clothes, and do not put sap-covered material on the compost pile where you will handle it again later.
- Wash everything, including the tools Soap and cold water on hands, forearms and face. Wash the blade too. Dried latex on a knife handle transfers to your fingers the next time you pick it up, and that is how most accidental exposures actually happen.
- If sap reaches an eye, flush and get help Flush the open eye with clean running water or saline for at least fifteen minutes without stopping, then seek medical attention the same day even if it feels better. Do not rub the eye and do not wait to see how it develops.
Keep these plants out of reach of children and pets, and never place one where someone brushes past it in a corridor. A knocked-off branch bleeds all over the floor and the person who knocked it.
They look like cacti, so people handle them like cacti
Succulent euphorbias and cacti evolved the same body shape independently: ribbed green columns, reduced leaves, spines. They are not related. The practical difference at the moment you touch one is that a cactus spine grows from a small cushion of felt called an areole and the plant bleeds clear watery sap if damaged, while a euphorbia carries paired thorns sitting directly on the rib, usually two side by side above a leaf scar, and bleeds white latex under pressure.
Learn to read that difference before you cut anything, because it decides how you protect yourself. Paired thorns with no felt pad, plus white sap, means full precautions. The plant widely sold as the African milk tree is one of these, and its upright candelabra form makes it easy to assume it is a cactus and treat it casually.

Rot: it starts at the base and it starts in winter
The classic loss is a plant that looked fine in autumn, spent a cold damp winter with wet compost around its base, and turns brown and soft at soil level in early spring. The stem above may still look perfectly green while the base has already gone, which is why people notice late. By the time the column keels over, the damage is weeks old.
Check the base with a fingertip once a fortnight through the cold months. Firm and woody is right. Any give, any darkening, any sour smell means act that day. The rot climbs a stem faster than you expect, roughly an inch every few days in a warm room.
- Stop watering and get it warm and airy Move the plant out of the cold and away from any source of damp. Do not water again until it has been cut back and has been dry for weeks.
- Cut above the damage, with full protection Gloves and goggles on. Slice across the stem well above the soft area. The cut face must be uniformly green or white with no brown flecks or rings. Brown specks mean the rot is higher than your cut, so cut again further up.
- Seal the cut with cold water and dry it Rinse both cut faces with cold water until bleeding stops, blot dry, then stand the healthy top upright somewhere warm, shaded and airy for two to three weeks until the wound is hard and corky.
- Root the salvaged top as a cutting Once the base is fully callused, set it in dry gritty mix and leave it unwatered for another two weeks. New roots form into dry mix perfectly well. Discard the rotted base and its compost rather than reusing either.
Never seal a cut with paste, glue or powder because you cannot inspect a wound you have covered. Cold water and open air do the job better.
The pests worth recognizing
Pests are a distant second to rot. Mealybugs are the common one, hiding in the ridges between ribs and in the tight growing point where they are hard to see against the pale wax on the stem. Spider mites appear in dry heated rooms and turn the newest growth dull, faintly bronzed and finely speckled. Scale shows up as immobile brown limpets along the ribs.
Deal with all of them by hand and by patience rather than by drenching the plant. Wipe each mealybug off with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, repeating weekly for a month to catch the eggs, and remember your gloves even for this because you will inevitably nick the plant.

Keep a note of what happened and when
These plants fail slowly and then suddenly, so a short written record is worth more than memory. Note the date you last watered before winter, the date you first felt softness at the base, where in the house the plant was standing, and how cold that spot got. Two winters of those notes usually reveal the culprit, and it is almost always one particular windowsill or one late autumn watering.
Record your cuttings too: the date you cut, the date the wound went hard, and the date you first saw new growth. Those three dates tell you how long the process really takes in your conditions, which is much more useful than a general figure, and they let you judge whether a slow cutting is failing or merely normal.
