Foxtail Millet Care: Watering a Shallow-Rooted Grain, Nitrogen Limits and Preventing Lodging

Once foxtail millet is up it asks for very little, and most of the trouble people have with it comes from giving it too much. The real work is early weed control and keeping a top-heavy stand from going flat.

A shallow root system and what it means

Foxtail millet roots are fine, dense and mostly in the top twelve to eighteen inches (30-45 cm) of soil. It is not a deep-rooted drought crop in the way that sorghum or pearl millet is; it survives dry weather by finishing quickly rather than by digging. That distinction governs everything about how you water it. It cannot go and find water two feet down, so a long dry spell during head filling costs you grain directly, but it also does not need or want a soaked profile.

The practical rule is to water the top foot (30 cm) thoroughly and then leave it alone until the crop tells you otherwise. In most soils that means a good soak every seven to ten days in warm dry weather and nothing at all if you have had an inch (25 mm) of rain in that time. Little daily sprinkles after emergence are actively harmful: they keep the roots shallow and the stand becomes even more prone to going over.

The signal to watch for is leaf rolling. Foxtail millet rolls its leaves lengthwise into tubes in the heat of the afternoon and unrolls them by evening; that is normal and needs no response. If leaves are still rolled at first light, the crop is genuinely short of water and you should soak the bed that morning. If leaves stay rolled through a morning during the two weeks when the heads are filling, you will lose seed weight, and that loss cannot be recovered later.

Nitrogen: less than you think, and timed early

Foxtail millet responds to nitrogen with height and leaf, and beyond a fairly low threshold that response is all stem and no grain. A crop that is knee high and dark green looks impressive and then lies flat across the bed after one thunderstorm, because you have grown four feet of soft stem on top of a root system that occupies barely a foot of soil. This is the single most common way a home crop of millet is spoiled.

In a bed that has grown a fed vegetable crop in the same season, apply nothing at all. In poor or long-uncultivated ground, a light dressing worked in before sowing is enough for the whole crop; the plant is only alive for eighty days and cannot use a slow feed program. If you want to give it something once it is growing, do it before the stems start to extend, which is roughly the first three weeks. After that, nitrogen goes into stem length and lodging risk rather than into the head.

Potassium is a different matter. It stiffens stems, and on light sandy soils a crop given wood ash or a potassium-bearing dressing before sowing stands noticeably better. If your millet has gone flat in previous years despite modest feeding, look at potassium first.

The first three weeks decide the weed battle

A thick stand of foxtail millet smothers weeds completely once the canopy closes, which is one of the main reasons gardeners grow it as a cover crop. But it is a small, slow seedling for the first two to three weeks, and anything that gets ahead of it in that period stays ahead. Hoe or hand weed once at around ten days and once more at around twenty days, and after that you will not need to go back in.

Hoe shallowly and carefully. The millet roots are near the surface and a deep hoe stroke that severs them will kill or check the plants far more than it checks the weed. A sharp hoe run just under the soil surface, or hand pulling between the rows, is the right level of disturbance. Once the crop is at knee height, stay out of it altogether; you will do more harm walking through than the remaining weeds will do standing there.

Keeping a top-heavy stand upright

The seed heads of foxtail millet are dense, heavy cylinders, and as they fill they bend the top of the stem over into a nod. That nodding is normal and is in fact your ripeness signal, but it also moves the center of gravity of the plant well outside the base. A stand carrying full heads is genuinely unstable, and rain adds significant weight to a bristly head that holds water.

There is no staking a cereal, so everything you can do is preventive and most of it happens before the heads exist. Sow thickly so the stems support each other. Keep nitrogen low. Give the bed potassium if the soil is light. Site the block where it has some shelter from the prevailing wind rather than in the open. If a patch does go over, prop the outer plants back up against a line of string run at chest height on stakes down each side of the block; you will not save a flattened center but you can stop the collapse spreading.

  1. Keep the stand thick from the start Sow at the full rate and never thin. Mutual support between slim stems is the main structural defense this crop has, and it is entirely decided at sowing.
  2. Stop nitrogen at three weeks No feeding once stems begin to extend. Late nitrogen produces soft, elongated internodes near the base which are exactly where a lodged stem folds.
  3. Run a string corral before the heads fill Drive stakes every four feet (1.2 m) around the block and run two lines of twine at knee and chest height. Do this while the crop is still upright, not after it has gone over.
  4. Stop watering once heads start to nod A wet, heavy head on a wet, softened stem is what actually causes collapse. Once the nod appears, the crop is on its final drying run and needs no more water.
  5. Cut early if a storm is coming If the grain is at hard dough and heavy weather is forecast, cut the heads and dry them under cover. A flattened block loses grain to the ground and to mold, and neither is recoverable.

A crop that has gone flat is not necessarily lost. If it lodged after the grain reached hard dough, cut the heads within a day or two and dry them under cover; the grain is already made. Lodging before flowering, by contrast, means a badly reduced crop and it is usually more honest to cut the whole block for compost and sow something else.

What to record while it grows

Note whether you fed the bed and with what, because in this crop the connection between a feed and a flattened block later is direct and easy to establish over two or three seasons. Record the date the stems begin to extend and the date the first head shows, and mark on a sketch of the bed which corners lodged and which stayed up. Wind direction and shelter almost always explain the pattern.

Record how many times you watered and roughly how much. Most gardeners water this crop far more than it needs, and a written record of a season where you watered three times and still cut a good crop is what finally breaks the habit. Note the dawn leaf-rolling dates too; they are the only honest drought signal the plant gives you.
