The cool-night trigger, and why timing is unforgiving
Freesia decides whether to flower early, inside the shoot, weeks before anything is visible. The flower spike is initiated while night temperatures sit below about 60F (15C), with the response getting stronger down towards 50F (10C). Give the plant that during its first eight to ten weeks of growth and a spike forms. Keep it above that range and the growing point stays vegetative, producing leaf after leaf. There is no later opportunity: once the plant has passed that stage as a leaf producer, moving it somewhere cool does not retroactively create a bud.
This is why a corm started in a warm room is such a reliable failure. The room feels ideal, the shoots come up quickly and strongly, and for six weeks the plant looks better than one grown cool. Then it keeps making leaves, the leaves get progressively longer and slacker, and eventually the whole thing collapses without a flower. People usually blame the corm.
It also explains why the same corms behave completely differently in different climates. Where winters are cool and frost-free, autumn-planted freesia grows through months of exactly the right nights and flowers heavily. Where winters are cold, the equivalent has to be manufactured: a frost-free but genuinely unheated space, which is a harder thing to find in a modern house than it sounds.

The other reasons a spike fails to appear
Warm nights account for most failures, but not all. Working through the alternatives is quick, because each has a distinct signature and the plant tells you which one it is.
- Corms too small Freesia corms below roughly half an inch (1.2 cm) across often flower weakly or not at all in their first year. Offsets saved from a previous season are frequently in this category. They are not wasted, but they need a full season of growth to reach flowering size.
- Not enough light Cool but dim is as bad as bright but warm. Stretched, pale, floppy leaves that lean hard toward the window mean the plant is short of light, and a spike formed under those conditions will be thin and few-flowered. Freesia wants full sun through the whole growing period.
- Too much nitrogen Rich compost or a general-purpose feed pushes leaf growth at the expense of the spike. Dark green, unusually broad, lush foliage on a plant that will not flower points here. Switch to a high-potassium feed.
- Corms that never rested properly A corm that was kept in growth or kept damp instead of being dried off after the previous season goes into the new one without a full dormancy and often skips flowering. The clue is history rather than appearance.
- Growth interrupted by a check A hard drying out, a sudden move from cool to hot, or a frost on soft growth during bud formation can abort a spike that had already started. The plant survives and carries on making leaves, which reads as if it never budded at all.
What flowering actually looks like when it works
The spike emerges from the center of the leaf fan and bends sharply near the top so the flowers all face upward along one side. That right-angled kink is characteristic and is not a fault; it is how the plant presents the flowers. Buds open in sequence from the base of the spike outward, usually over two to three weeks, and each individual flower lasts several days.
Cool conditions during flowering extend the display considerably. The same spike that gives ten days in a warm room gives three weeks or more at 55F (13C). Cutting for the vase is a genuine option here, because freesia continues opening its buds in water and a spike cut when the lowest one or two flowers have opened will open nearly all the rest.
Expect flowering roughly ten to fourteen weeks after shoots emerge, with cooler growing conditions stretching that toward the longer end. If shoots came up and twelve weeks have passed with no sign of a spike thickening in the center of the fan, the season has gone vegetative and it is worth reading back through the causes above rather than waiting.
Scent is real, but it is not the same in every color
Freesia is grown as much for the scent as the flower, and it is worth knowing before you plant that the strength varies enormously between color groups. The white and cream flowers, and the pale yellows, are consistently the most strongly scented, with the dense sweet peppery smell that the plant is known for. Reds, deep purples and some of the strong pinks can be markedly weaker, and a few are close to unscented, which is a common disappointment for someone who chose them purely on color.
Scent also carries far better in cool air and is strongest in the first two or three days a flower is open. A pot brought indoors from a cold frame will fill a room; the same pot kept permanently warm never smells as strong, because the flowers open and age faster.
If scent is the point, plant a mixed batch and record which colors in your own conditions actually delivered it. That note is more useful than any general rule, because it accounts for both your growing conditions and your own nose.
When buying a color-themed mix for scent, weight it toward whites and pale yellows and treat the strong reds and purples as color rather than fragrance. This is a reliable pattern across the species, not a quirk of particular stock.
