A small orchid that lives on air, not in soil
The wind orchid is a miniature monopodial orchid that grows wild on tree branches, not in the ground. It has no bulbs and no storage organs beyond its stiff, curved, fan-arranged leaves, and it carries a mass of thick white roots that in nature wander over bark in open air. Everything about where you keep it follows from that. The roots are photosynthetic, they are built to be wet briefly and then dry quickly, and they suffocate when they are buried in anything dense or left sitting in still, damp air.
In cultivation the plant is normally grown on a raised mound of sphagnum in a footed pot, or tied to a slab of cork or tree fern. Either way, most of the root mass sits above the rim of the container in the open. That is not decoration. It is the growing method, and it means that the position you choose has to supply air movement as reliably as it supplies light.
A wind orchid is small enough that placement is easy to change. Treat it as a plant you move with the seasons rather than one you set on a windowsill and forget, because the two conditions it needs most, summer airflow and winter cold, rarely exist in the same spot in a house.
Light: bright, but never direct midday sun
Aim for the light under a high canopy: bright enough to cast a soft-edged shadow, never bright enough to make the leaves hot to the touch. In practical terms that is roughly 50 to 70 percent shade through the strongest part of the year, which one layer of shade cloth or the dappled shade of a deciduous tree supplies. Indoors, an east window all day, or a south or west window set back two to three feet (60 to 90 cm) from the glass, is about right.
Healthy leaves under correct light are a medium green with a slight sheen, held stiff and curved. Leaves that go dark green, soft and floppy have been kept too dim, and a plant in that state grows but will not flower. Leaves that turn yellow-green, then develop bleached patches that later go papery brown, have been burned, and burned tissue never recovers.
In winter the plant needs the opposite handling. It is resting, but it still wants the brightest light you can give, because winter light is weak and short. Move it to full sun through glass or to an unshaded position outdoors under cover once the strong summer sun has gone. Light in winter builds the reserves that go into the following summer's flowers.
Increase light gradually in spring over two to three weeks. A plant moved straight from a dim winter position into strong spring sun burns within a couple of days, even at temperatures that feel mild.
Air movement is not optional
Of all the miniature orchids kept on a sphagnum mound, this one is the least tolerant of stagnant air. Exposed roots need to go from wet to nearly dry within a few hours, and the only thing that does that is moving air. In still air the same watering that would be harmless becomes a slow rot at the base of the leaf fan, and the first sign is usually a lower leaf that yellows and pulls away cleanly.
Outdoors this looks after itself. Indoors it does not, and a small fan running on its lowest setting somewhere in the room, not pointed at the plant, solves the problem completely. The test is simple: if a mound that has been thoroughly watered in the morning is still visibly wet at the surface that evening, the position has too little air.
The same rule applies to how the plant is set down. Standing a footed pot flat on a solid saucer traps damp under it. Set it on an open grid, a slatted bench or a layer of pebbles so air reaches the underside, and never leave standing water in a tray beneath it.
The seasonal moves
Think of the year as four positions rather than one. The plant spends the growing season outdoors in filtered light, comes under cover as nights turn cold, sits through a genuinely cold and bright rest, and then goes back out once hard frost is finished. The table below gives the target conditions for each stage.

The autumn move is the one most people get wrong by doing it too early. Bringing the plant into a warm room as soon as nights feel chilly robs it of the cold it needs, and the cost is a summer with no flowers.
Where not to keep it
A heated living room in winter is the single worst position, because it is both too warm and too dry. A plant kept at 65F (18C) and above right through winter stays green, keeps its leaves, and simply does not flower, and the owner usually blames feeding or light when the real cause was the temperature.
A sealed terrarium or glass case is the second worst. The humidity is welcome but the still air is fatal, and the roots rot from the base outward within a season. If you use an enclosed case, it must have a fan.
Avoid deep windowsills behind curtains in winter, where a plant can drop below freezing overnight while you assume it is indoors and safe. Brief exposure just above freezing is tolerated, but ice in the sphagnum kills roots outright, and a frozen mound takes days to thaw.
What to write down for next year
Placement decisions pay off six months later, so they have to be written down or they are lost. Record the day you moved the plant outdoors in spring and the day you brought it under cover in autumn, along with the night temperature on each of those days. After two seasons you will know exactly how late you can leave it out, which is the number that decides whether it flowers.
Note the lowest temperature the plant actually experienced during its winter rest, taken from a cheap minimum-reading thermometer left beside it, rather than the temperature you assumed the space held. Add the number of weeks it stayed below 50F (10C). Those two figures explain almost every good or poor flowering season.
Finally, record which position each plant occupied if you grow more than one, and how the leaf color looked at the end of summer. Pale, hard, slightly yellow-green leaves mean that spot was at the bright limit; dark, soft, wide leaves mean it was too shaded. Swap the plants between the two positions next year and compare.
