Bud drop is a response to change, not to neglect
Fat green buds that swell to the size of a marble, yellow at the base and fall off untouched is the single most common thing that happens to a gardenia. It is also the most misdiagnosed. People reach for fertilizer, or a fungicide, or they move the plant somewhere brighter, and the moving is often what caused it in the first place.
A gardenia forms its buds over several weeks and holds them while it decides whether the conditions will still be there when the flower opens. Anything that interrupts the plant during that window is read as a reason to abandon the investment. A move from one room to another, a cold draft from a door opened every morning, a radiator drying the air, a pot standing on a cold floor, a watering can that came a few days late, a repot in the middle of budding: any one of these is enough. The plant does not care which one it was.
The give-away is the timing. Bud drop that follows within one to two weeks of something you did is almost always caused by that thing. Buds that go yellow and loose while the leaves stay dark green and healthy point at conditions, not at pests or disease. Buds that go brown and dry, with the leaves also dull and drooping, point at the root ball having gone dry at some point. The practical rule that follows is uncomfortable but effective: once a gardenia is in bud, settle where it lives and how it is watered, then change nothing at all until the last flower has opened.

Warm nights are what buds are actually waiting for
Gardenias set flower buds according to the night temperature, not the day temperature, and this is the reason a plant can sit in a bright warm room all season and never produce a single bud. The figure to aim for is nights around 60F (16C), with a useful working range of roughly 60 to 65F (16 to 18C) at night and 70 to 75F (21 to 24C) during the day. A drop of ten degrees or so between day and night is normal and welcome.
Two failures come out of this. Nights above about 68F (20C) suppress bud formation entirely, which is why a plant in an evenly heated room grows glossy leaves and nothing else. Nights below about 55F (13C) stall the buds that already exist, so they sit green for weeks and then abort.
Outdoors this sorts itself out through late spring and early summer, which is why gardenias in the ground in a mild climate flower without any thought at all. Indoors you have to find the cooler corner of a warm house. A conservatory, a porch, or a bright room that is allowed to cool at night usually beats a living room held at a constant temperature all evening. If your plant grows well and refuses to bud, measure the night temperature before you change anything else.
Take the reading at the plant, not from the room thermostat. A windowsill can be ten degrees colder than the middle of the same room on a clear night, and a shelf above a radiator can be ten degrees warmer.
Water and humidity are one problem, not two
Gardenias want the root ball evenly moist and the air around the leaves damp, and indoor conditions usually deliver neither. Watering on a calendar is what kills most of them: the plant dries out between two of your fixed watering days in warm weather, and sits soaking through a cool week when growth has slowed. Check instead of counting.
Push a finger an inch (2.5 cm) into the compost. If it is dry at that depth, water thoroughly until it runs from the drainage holes, then tip away whatever collects in the saucer. If it is still damp, come back tomorrow. In active growth in warm weather that often works out at every two or three days; in a cool spell it may be once a week or less.
Water quality matters more here than for almost anything else you grow, because hard tap water raises the pH of the compost over months and locks up iron. Rainwater is the right answer wherever you can collect it.
Humidity is the other half. Central heating dries indoor air to a level that browns gardenia leaf tips and encourages red spider mite. A tray of gravel kept topped up with water under the pot, grouping plants together, or a humidifier all help. Misting feels productive but lasts minutes, and misting open flowers marks the petals brown.
- Check by finger, not by date An inch (2.5 cm) down. Dry means water now; damp means wait. Doing this for two weeks teaches you the plant's real rhythm in your conditions better than any general rule.
- Water thoroughly, then drain Fill until water runs freely from the base, so the whole root ball is wetted. Empty the saucer within half an hour. A gardenia standing in water loses roots quickly and then shows the same drooping leaves as a dry one.
- Use rainwater where you can Collected rainwater keeps the compost acid. If you must use tap water in a hard-water area, let it stand overnight and plan on a chelated iron drench once or twice through the growing season.
- Raise the humidity, and warm the water A gravel tray under the pot, with the pot base clear of the water line, lifts local humidity all day. Use water at room temperature: cold water on winter roots is enough on its own to trigger bud drop.
Feeding an acid-loving shrub without burning it
Gardenias are heavy feeders in growth and easily damaged out of it. Feed with a fertilizer made for acid-loving or ericaceous plants, at roughly half the strength on the label, every two to four weeks from the start of new growth in spring until late summer. Then stop. Feeding a plant that is not growing simply builds up salts in the compost, and those salts show as brown leaf edges that look exactly like drought damage.
The nitrogen source is worth checking. Feeds based on ammonium and urea keep the compost acid; feeds based on nitrate push it the other way. An ericaceous formulation handles this for you. If the leaves are yellowing between green veins, though, that is a pH problem rather than a shortage of fertilizer: water on chelated iron and deal with the acidity separately.
Once a year, in the growing season, flush the pot: water slowly with about four times the pot's volume of clean water and let it all drain away. This washes out accumulated fertilizer salts and hard-water residue, and it is the cheapest thing you can do for a container gardenia.
Never feed a dry plant. Water first, wait an hour, then apply the feed. Fertilizer going onto dry roots scorches them, and the damage appears a fortnight later as browning leaf margins that get blamed on the air.
What to write down so next year makes sense
Gardenia problems are separated by timing more than by appearance, and timing is the thing memory gets wrong. A short record turns next year's guesswork into a diagnosis. Note the date the first bud became visible and the date the first flower opened, because the gap between them is your plant's normal and a shortened gap means something rushed it.
Record every bud drop with the date and what happened in the ten days before it: a move, a cold night, a missed watering, a repot, a new feed. After two seasons the pattern is usually obvious, and it is almost never the thing people assume. Keep the night temperature readings from your chosen spot through the budding period, and note where the plant stood in each season.
Finally, note when you last flushed the pot, last repotted, and last applied iron. These are the interventions people are least able to remember accurately, and they are exactly the ones that explain a plant that has slowly gone pale over two years.
