Gentian Problems: Yellowing Leaves, Rot at the Collar and Slugs in the Buds

Most gentian trouble is not a pest. Yellow leaves mean the wrong soil, a collapsed mat means water sitting at the collar, and a plant that quietly fades has usually been fed or disturbed. Read the pattern before you act.

Read the pattern before reaching for anything

Gentian complaints look alike from a distance and have almost nothing in common underneath. Leaves that yellow between the veins while the veins stay green mean lime in the root zone of a plant that cannot tolerate it. A mat that has gone brown and soft in the middle while the edges are still green means rot at the collar from water sitting there. A plant that shrinks slowly over two seasons without any visible damage has usually been disturbed, overfed or planted in ground that dries out at depth.

Getting this right matters because the responses are contradictory. Feeding a plant with collar rot accelerates it. Watering a plant suffering from lime damage with the same hard tap water makes it worse. Digging up a slowly declining clump to inspect the roots inflicts precisely the disturbance that was already the problem. Sit down in front of the plant, look at where on it the damage starts, and identify the pattern before touching anything.

It also helps to know what is normal. Many gentians die back to a resting crown or a tight rosette at the end of their season, and the autumn-flowering kinds in particular look like nothing at all for months. A pot or a patch of grit with no visible plant in it in the cold months is not a dead gentian, and more of them are thrown away in that state than are ever killed by disease.

Yellowing leaves: the wrong soil, not a deficiency to be sprayed away

Yellowing between the veins on an autumn-flowering Asian gentian, while the veins themselves stay dark green, is the single most common problem with these plants and it has one cause: lime in the root zone that the plant cannot cope with. It locks up iron and other nutrients so the plant cannot use them, and the leaves pale from the newest growth backwards. Left uncorrected, the plant grows shorter each year, flowers less, and eventually gives up.

The sources are usually mundane and easily overlooked. Hard tap water applied all season is the most frequent. Limestone chippings used as a top dressing are the next, because rain moves lime out of them straight into the root zone. Mortar rubble buried under a wall or a path edge is the third, and it is why a gentian planted at the foot of a house wall so often does badly while the same plant thrives ten feet away.

Correcting it takes a season and the changes are all at the surface, since digging near the roots is not an option. Switch to rainwater. Sweep the limestone chippings away and replace them with lime-free grit. Work leaf mold or an acidic potting mix gently into the top inch (2 to 3 cm) of soil around the plant, and give a dilute ericaceous liquid feed as growth begins. The old leaves will not green up again, but the new ones will come through a healthy color, which is how you know it worked.

Rot at the collar, and the water that causes it

Gentians want constant moisture at the roots and a dry neck, and the gap between those two requirements is where they are killed. Where water sits around the collar, where soil is splashed up onto the low foliage, or where a mat lies flat on damp ground through a cold wet spell, the tissue at the base goes soft and brown and the plant collapses from the middle outwards. On a mat-forming kind you often see a green ring with a dead center.

The prevention is structural rather than reactive. A third by volume of coarse grit worked through the root zone means water moves away instead of standing. An inch (2 to 3 cm) of grit top dressing right up to the collar keeps the neck dry while the soil beneath stays moist. Planting on a slight rise, on a slope or in a raised bed or trough gets the crown above the wet, and watering at the base rather than over the top keeps foliage and collar dry overnight.

Where rot has already started, cut the dead tissue out cleanly with a sharp knife back to firm growth, pull the grit back a little so air can reach the area, and stop watering until the surface has dried. Do not feed a rotting plant. If a healthy piece of the mat remains at one edge, take cuttings or a rooted layer from it as insurance, because the parent may not recover and a rooted piece started in the right conditions usually does better than the original ever did.

Never leave a potted gentian standing in a saucer of water, particularly through the cold months. Cold, saturated compost around the collar is the most reliable way to kill one of these plants outright.

Slugs, weevils and the animals that actually do damage

Slugs and snails are the pest that matters. They shelter under exactly the grit top dressing the plant needs, come out on damp evenings, and take the flower buds off a gentian just before they open, which is the most infuriating possible timing. The evidence is a clean-cut stem with the bud gone and a slime trail glinting across the grit in the morning. Clear leaf litter and loose debris from immediately around the collar, patrol on damp evenings while the buds are swelling, and check under the edge of any nearby stone or log.

Vine weevil is the container problem. The adults notch the leaf edges in a characteristic scalloped pattern, which is cosmetic, but the grubs eat the roots and the first real sign is a plant that wilts and then lifts out of the compost with almost nothing attached. Any potted gentian that fails suddenly should be knocked out and inspected. If you find the plump white grubs, wash the roots clean, discard every scrap of the old compost, and repot into fresh gritty mix.

Aphids appear on soft new growth in warm weather and on plants that have been overfed, which is a clue in itself. They distort the shoot tips and leave sticky honeydew that goes black with sooty mold. Wash them off with a jet of water directed under the leaves rather than spraying the whole plant, and take the infestation as a signal to cut back on feeding. Birds occasionally pull at a newly planted mat while looking for insects underneath, and a few short twigs laid across the plant for its first season stops that.

The slow fade, and keeping a record that catches it

The failure that catches most people out is not dramatic. A gentian that has been moved, forked around, or planted in ground that dries at depth simply gets a little smaller each year: fewer flowering stems, shorter growth, a mat that thins at the center. There is no lesion to point at and no pest to blame, which is why it usually goes unnoticed until the plant is gone. The response is to stop disturbing the ground near it, correct the drainage and moisture at the surface, and give it two full seasons to rebuild.

Because this decline is measured in years rather than weeks, notes are the only thing that catches it in time. Each season record the number of flowering stems on each clump, the width of the mat, the date growth first appeared and the date the first flower opened. Add the date of any disturbance nearby, the first date you saw yellowing between the veins or slug damage to the buds, and which water you have been using. When the trend is written down, a plant that is quietly slipping becomes obvious two seasons before it would otherwise be noticed, and that is enough time to save it.
