Rhizome rot is the one that matters
Almost every ginger plant that dies, dies of rot. Soft rot and bacterial wilt both live in wet soil, both enter through wounds and cut ends, and both spread on tools and on water running between plants. The visible symptoms come late: by the time a shoot yellows and pulls out of the ground with a foul smell, the rhizome below has already gone.
There is no cure once it is established. Everything useful happens beforehand, in drainage, in soil temperature at planting, in not planting damaged pieces, and in not growing ginger in the same ground two years running. Treat rot as a design problem rather than a treatment problem.

Never plant a rhizome with a soft patch, however small, and never plant into ground where a ginger crop rotted. Rotate onto fresh ground on a three to four year cycle, and disinfect your knife between pieces when you divide.
Reading yellow leaves correctly
Yellowing means at least four different things in ginger, and the response to each is opposite. Yellowing from the tips inwards late in the season is the crop maturing and is what you want. Yellowing all over in mid-season while the soil is wet is rot or waterlogging. Uniform pale yellow with steady growth is hunger. Yellow with fine speckling and dry-looking leaves is mites.
Before you do anything, check the soil with a finger and look at the underside of a leaf. Those two checks separate the four causes almost every time, and they take less than a minute.

The pests that actually turn up
Ginger is not heavily troubled by insects, and the short list is worth knowing precisely. Spider mites are by far the most common problem on container and glasshouse plants, thriving in hot dry air and showing as fine pale speckling with webbing in the leaf joints. Root-knot nematodes are the serious soil problem, causing stunted plants and knobbly, galled rhizomes that store badly.
Chinese rose beetles and various caterpillars chew ragged holes in leaves, which looks alarming but rarely affects the harvest. Judge leaf damage by how much of the canopy is gone: below about a quarter, do nothing.
- Check leaf undersides weekly Mites live and breed underneath. Turn two or three leaves over each week in hot weather; you will find them a fortnight before the leaf surface shows anything.
- Raise the humidity Mites collapse in humid air. Misting the foliage and grouping pots together does more than most sprays, and costs nothing.
- Wet the undersides when you spray Insecticidal soap only works on contact. A spray that hits the top of the leaf and nothing else is wasted effort.
- Look at the rhizome when you lift Knobbly swellings and pitted surfaces mean nematodes. That ground should not carry ginger again for several years.
Cold and sun damage, which are not diseases
Ginger stops growing below about 55F (13C) and is damaged below 50F (10C). A rhizome chilled in storage or in cold spring soil goes translucent and watery in patches, which is often mistaken for rot. Frost destroys the foliage outright and the rhizomes underneath rarely survive in the ground.
At the other end, leaves in full unrelieved sun above 90F (32C) develop bleached patches and crisp brown edges. This is scorch, not disease, and neither spraying nor feeding helps. Move the pot or provide afternoon shade and the new growth comes through clean.

When to give up on a plant
Removing an infected plant promptly protects the rest of the bed, and hesitating is the expensive choice. If a shoot pulls out of the ground with no resistance and smells sour, lift the whole clump along with a spadeful of the surrounding soil and put it in the bin rather than the compost pile.
Mite damage, leaf holes and scorch are all worth persisting with; a plant can lose a third of its leaf area and still crop. The distinction is simple. Anything wrong with the rhizome is terminal and contagious. Anything wrong with the leaves alone usually is not.
Write down where every rot case appeared, with the date and the weather that week. After two seasons the record almost always points at one wet corner of the plot, and the fix is drainage or a different bed rather than anything you spray.
