Shedding after a move is normal and it is not the plant dying
Nearly every ginseng ficus loses leaves in its first month in a new home, and a good number lose the entire canopy. The tree was grown in a bright, humid, warm nursery, and every leaf on it was built for that. When the light drops to indoor levels the tree cannot run that many leaves on the sugar it can now make, so it sheds down to a number it can afford. The swollen root that makes up the trunk is a food and water store, and it is exactly what carries the tree through this. That store is why a bare ginseng ficus is far less of an emergency than a bare cutting would be.
The rebuild follows within three to eight weeks. The new leaves that open are smaller, thinner and a duller green than the nursery leaves, and that is correct rather than a sign of decline. They are built for your window. Once they are open the tree stops shedding, and from then on it holds its canopy unless you change something again.
The mistake that turns a normal shed into a real loss is intervening. Watering more, feeding, repotting or moving the tree to a better spot all pile stress onto a tree that is already rebalancing. The correct response to a shedding ginseng ficus is to do less, not more.
A tree with half its leaves uses roughly half the water it did. This is the single most useful sentence about leaf drop: the shedding itself is survivable, and it is the wet soil that follows that kills trees.
Read the fallen leaf to find the cause
The color and condition of the leaves on the floor narrow the cause down faster than anything else. Pick a few up and look at them before you change anything about your care.

What to do while the canopy is thin
Four things, and three of them are things you stop doing. The tree needs a stable environment and a lighter hand for as long as it takes to open a new set of leaves.
- Cut the watering to match the leaves A bare or half-bare tree transpires very little. Keep watering on the old interval and the soil stays saturated, which rots the fine roots and turns a recoverable shed into a dead tree. Check the top inch (2.5 cm) with a finger before every watering and only water when it is genuinely dry.
- Stop feeding until a new leaf opens Fertilizer does not build leaves, light does. A tree that is not growing cannot take up what you give it, and the salts build up in a small bonsai pot fast. Resume feeding only after you can see new growth extending.
- Do not repot and do not prune Both remove resources the tree is currently living on. Repotting cuts the roots that are supplying the rebuild, and pruning removes the buds that would become the new canopy. Wait until the tree has held a full set of leaves for a month.
- Pick one position and stay there Every move restarts the adjustment from the beginning, which is how people end up with a tree that sheds for six months. Choose the brightest sensible spot on day one and leave the tree in it, even if week three looks worse than week one.
When it is not just adjustment
There is a point at which waiting stops being the right answer. The test is the wood, not the leaves. Scratch a fingernail lightly across a thin branch: green underneath means live wood and the tree will rebuild. Brown and dry underneath means that branch is gone, and you should work back toward the trunk until you reach green.
Also press the swollen root trunk with a thumb. It should be hard, like a potato that has not gone off. Soft patches, a give under the skin, or a sour smell from the soil all mean rot has reached the store, and at that point the tree is on a different track: get it out of the wet soil immediately, cut away the mush, and repot into fresh, sharply draining mix.
A tree that is bare but has green wood and a hard trunk almost always comes back. Give it eight weeks in good light with barely any water before you judge it.
Do not remove branches during a shed just because they are leafless. Buds sit dormant along bare wood and will push once the light is stable. Cut only the branches that fail the scratch test.
What to write down so the next shed is not a surprise
Leaf drop is much less alarming the second time if you have notes from the first. Record the date the shedding started, what changed just before it (came home, moved rooms, heating switched on, clocks changed), roughly how many leaves fell and over how many days, and the date you saw the first new leaf open. The gap between those two dates is your tree's recovery time, and it stays fairly consistent year to year.
Also log the watering interval you settled on during the bare period versus the one you use with a full canopy. Those two numbers are the practical result of the whole episode, and having them written down means you cut back correctly and immediately the next time rather than guessing.
