With most fruit you can be careless for a fortnight in autumn and nothing much happens. Grapefruit does not allow that. The fruit takes roughly nine to fourteen months from flower to eating quality, which means that for most of the year the tree is carrying a maturing crop, a new flush of leaves and, for part of the season, next year's flowers as well. Anything that checks the tree lands on all three at once.
The practical consequence is that consistency beats intensity. A tree watered steadily and fed on a plain schedule will out-produce a tree that gets heroic attention in spring and is forgotten in late summer. Most home grapefruit problems, from thin skinned split fruit to yellow blotchy leaves, trace back to a swing rather than to a shortage.
It also means you cannot fix a bad season late. By the time fruit is visibly small in autumn, the cell division that determined its size happened months earlier. Care is preventative on this tree, which is why the schedule matters more than any single technique.
Watering: deep, spaced, and never on a fixed day
Grapefruit wants deep infrequent soaking rather than frequent light watering. In hot weather an established tree in the ground typically needs a thorough soak every seven to ten days; in cool weather it may need nothing for weeks. In a container, that interval collapses to every day or two in high summer, which is one of the reasons container culture is hard for this species.
Do not water to a calendar. Push a finger, or better a screwdriver, four to six inches (10-15 cm) into the soil under the canopy edge. If it comes out with damp soil clinging, wait. If the top four inches (10 cm) are dry, water and water properly: enough to wet the soil to about eighteen inches (45 cm) deep, which on most soils means running a slow soak for an hour or more rather than a few minutes with a hose.
Water at the canopy edge and beyond, not at the trunk. The feeding roots are out under the drip line and slightly past it, while the base of the trunk is precisely where you do not want persistent moisture. On a mature tree, that means moving the soaker or the sprinkler outward each year as the crown widens.
Overwatering looks deceptively like drought: leaves yellow, wilt and drop, and the instinct is to water more. The difference is in the soil. Dig down six inches (15 cm) next to a struggling tree and feel it. Wet soil plus wilting leaves means the roots are drowning and you must stop watering entirely until the soil dries. Dry soil plus wilting means the opposite. Check before you act.

Feeding a hungry evergreen without pushing soft growth
Grapefruit is a heavy feeder with a strong nitrogen requirement, and it is evergreen, so it is drawing on reserves all year rather than shutting down. Use a citrus fertilizer that supplies nitrogen along with magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese, because citrus is prone to micronutrient deficiency and the leaf symptoms are unmistakable once you learn them.
Split the year's feed into three or four applications rather than giving it all at once. Feed as growth starts in early spring, again as the flowers fade, again in early summer, and stop by late summer. That final cut-off matters: nitrogen applied late pushes a soft flush of leaves that will not harden before cold weather and that will be the first thing damaged by frost, and it can also coarsen the rind of the fruit you are still carrying.
Spread the fertilizer over the whole root zone from a foot (30 cm) out from the trunk to just past the drip line, then water it in. Never pile it against the trunk. In a container, halve the strength and double the frequency, because every watering carries nutrients out of the drainage holes.
Read the leaves before adding anything. Uniform pale green over the whole tree usually means nitrogen. Yellow between the veins on older leaves with a green inverted V at the base is magnesium. Yellow between the veins on the youngest leaves, with the veins staying sharply green, is iron and is very often a symptom of soil that is too wet or too alkaline rather than of a genuine shortage. Feeding iron into waterlogged soil fixes nothing.
Keep a short feeding log: the date, what you applied and roughly how much, plus a line on how the tree looked. After two seasons the log shows you whether your late-summer growth flush is a feeding habit or a watering habit, and that is not a question you can answer from memory.
Supporting the crop and keeping the tree in bounds
Grapefruit carries its fruit in tight clusters, sometimes five or eight fruit hanging together from one point on a branch. Each fruit can weigh a pound (450 g) or more, so a single cluster is a serious weight hanging at the end of a lever, and it hangs there for the better part of a year while wind works on it. Branch breakage is not an occasional accident on this tree; it is the normal failure mode, and it is entirely preventable.
From midsummer, walk the tree every few weeks and sight along each loaded branch from the side. A branch tip that has visibly dropped since your last look is telling you it is at its limit. The two remedies are removing some fruit from the cluster and setting a padded prop under the branch about two-thirds of the way out. Do both if the load is severe. Set props on a paving slab or a flat stone so they do not sink into wet ground, and pad the top with cloth or hose so the bark is not chafed through over months of movement.
Thin the clusters early rather than propping late. Once the natural fruit drop has finished and the fruitlets are around golf-ball size, break each cluster down to two or three fruit, taking off the smallest and any that are touching. Fruit in contact develops a pale flat patch and traps moisture between the two rinds, which is where rot starts on an otherwise clean crop.
Keep the ground under the tree clear and mulched, and keep other plants out of the root zone. Grapefruit competes badly with turf and with anything that wants regular shallow watering. A clean mulched circle out to the drip line is worth more to the tree than any amount of feeding, and it also means you can see the props, the fallen fruit and the ant trails that tell you scale has arrived.
