Why the poor corner is the right corner
Goumi, sold in English as goumi or cherry silverberry, is an actinorhizal shrub: its roots carry nodules of Frankia bacteria that pull nitrogen out of the air and hand it to the plant. That single fact should decide where you put it. A shrub that manufactures its own nitrogen has no use for the deep, manured bed you saved for the raspberries, and on that ground it repays you with three feet of soft leafy growth and almost no fruit.
Put it instead on the ground you have been apologising for. Thin soil over rubble, a dry bank, the strip along a drive, the windy end of the garden, sand that dries out by midsummer. Goumi fruits well on all of it. The one soil condition it genuinely refuses is standing water in winter; roots sitting in a wet hollow will rot, nitrogen fixation or not.
It is also indifferent to pH across the range most gardens sit in, tolerant of salt spray and coastal wind, and hardy well below zero Fahrenheit. If you have been treating it as a delicate fruit bush and siting it accordingly, you have been making the crop worse.

Plant two, not one
Goumi is usually described as self-fertile, and it is, in the sense that a lone bush will set some fruit. But the difference between one plant and two is not marginal. A second plant nearby routinely doubles or triples the set, and the berries come larger and more evenly filled because more ovules are fertilized in each one. If you have room for only one bush, you would get more fruit from half the space planted with two smaller ones.
The two do not need to be different named plants; two seedlings, or two plants of different origin, will do. Set them within about fifteen feet (4.5 m) of each other so the small bees and hoverflies that work the flowers move between them without effort. Flowers are creamy, tubular, hang under the shoots in mid spring and are strongly scented, which is why pollinators find them even in cool weather.
Planting it to feed something else
Goumi is often planted for what it does to its neighbors rather than for its own fruit. Nitrogen fixed in the root nodules leaks into the soil through fine root turnover and through anything you prune off and drop on the ground, and a fruit tree growing within the goumi's root zone gets a slow, steady share of it. In an orchard understorey or a mixed fruit hedge this is one of the few companion-planting claims that holds up.
To use it that way, set the goumi so its canopy edge is roughly at the drip line of the tree it is feeding, not tight against the trunk. Two or three goumi around a single standard apple, pear or plum is a common arrangement. Accept that you will be cutting the goumi back hard every year or two to keep it out of the tree; that prunings-on-the-ground habit is exactly how the nitrogen gets delivered.
Do not plant goumi inside a bed you also feed. Nitrogen you apply for the vegetables suppresses nodulation, so the shrub stops fixing, grows soft, and you get the worst of both.
Getting it in the ground
Bare-root plants go in while dormant, at any point between leaf fall and bud break when the ground is not frozen. Container plants can go in at any time, but one planted in summer will need watering through its first dry spell. Either way you are planting a multi-stemmed shrub, so do not look for a trunk or a graft union; goumi is almost always on its own roots.
- Dig wide and shallow Open a hole two to three times the width of the roots and no deeper than they sat before. Loosen the sides if the ground is compacted so roots are not left circling in a smooth pit.
- Backfill with the soil you took out No compost, no manure, no fertilizer of any kind. This is the step people cannot resist and the one that costs them the crop. Ordinary garden soil is what the plant is built for.
- Set it at the old soil line On a bare-root plant the line shows as a color change low on the stems. On a potted plant, match the top of the root ball to the finished soil level and tease the outer inch (2 to 3 cm) of roots loose.
- Water in with five gallons (20 L) Pour it slowly so it soaks rather than runs off. This settles soil into contact with the roots and does more good than anything you could have mixed into the hole.
- Mulch, but keep it thin Two inches (5 cm) of bark or wood chips over the root zone, pulled a hand's width back from the stems. Skip manure mulches for the same reason you skipped feeding.
- Shorten nothing you want fruit from Cut out damaged or crossing stems at the base, but leave the tips of healthy shoots alone. Flower buds for the first crop sit along wood made the previous season.
What to write down on planting day
Record the date the plant went in, whether it was bare-root or potted, and exactly where each plant stands relative to a fixed marker such as a post or a tree. That last item matters more than it sounds: goumi suckers, and in three years you will want to know which stems came from the plant you set and which came up on their own.
Note the soil you planted into and whether you fed it. If you inherited a bush that grows hard and fruits badly, the feeding history is the first thing worth checking, and the only way to check it later is to have written it down.
