Birds are the main problem, and they are early
Haskap ripens ahead of every other soft fruit, at a point in the year when birds have almost nothing else available. They also judge ripeness the way beginners do, by color, so they start on the crop as soon as it turns blue, roughly a fortnight before you want to pick. An unprotected bush in a garden with an established blackbird or waxwing population can be stripped in two or three days.
Netting is the only reliable answer. Deterrents built on shine, noise or movement work for a few days and then stop working, which is not long enough when the fruit sits blue on the bush for two weeks. Put the net on the day the first berries lose their green, not the day you plan to pick.
Support the net clear of the foliage on canes, hoops or a simple frame. Netting draped directly onto the bush lets birds perch and feed through the mesh, and it traps them. Use a fine mesh of about half an inch (12 mm), weight or peg the bottom edge to the ground all the way round, and check daily during the fruiting period for any bird that has found a way in.

Powdery mildew after harvest
The most common disease on haskap is powdery mildew, and it turns up late, usually well after the fruit is off the bush. A white dusty coating spreads over the leaves, they yellow, and the bush can defoliate weeks early in a bad year. It looks alarming and does far less damage than it appears to, because the crop has already been picked and the plant has done most of its work for the season.
That said, repeated heavy defoliation year after year weakens a bush and cuts the following year's fruit bud. The controls are cultural rather than chemical. Prune to keep the center of the bush open so air moves through it, avoid overhead watering late in the day, keep the plants at proper spacing rather than crowded, and rake up and remove fallen leaves at the end of the season instead of leaving them as inoculum under the bush.
Fungicide is rarely justified on a garden haskap. If mildew is severe every single year, the underlying issue is almost always a crowded, unpruned bush or a site with no air movement, and fixing that fixes the mildew.
Heat, drought and shallow roots
The physiological problems on haskap all come from the same place: a shallow, fibrous root system in the top 12 inches (30 cm) of soil, on a plant adapted to cool climates. Long spells above 85F (30C), especially with dry soil, produce browned and crisped leaf margins, early leaf drop and a bush that goes into autumn already depleted. In hot regions this is the factor that decides whether haskap thrives or merely survives.
The countermeasures are simple and they matter more than anything else you do for the plant. Maintain 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 cm) of mulch over the entire root spread and top it up every year. Water deeply and early in a dry spell rather than waiting for the leaves to flag, since a shallow-rooted plant has no reserve to draw on. Where summers are hot, site the bush so that it has full morning sun and shade after the middle of the afternoon.
Keep grass and weeds well away from the base. Turf competing for water in the top few inches of soil does more damage to haskap than to almost any other fruit bush, and clearing it is often the single change that turns a struggling plant around.
When something goes wrong, write down what you saw, the date relative to bloom and harvest, and which bush it was on. Haskap problems repeat on the same plant in the same site, so a two-line note each year builds a picture very quickly, and it tells you whether a mildew year was the weather or the way that one bush is pruned.
Animals, and the things haskap does not get
Deer browse the soft spring growth and rabbits will strip bark at the base in winter when other food is short. Both are dealt with by a physical barrier: a guard around the base of a young bush, or fencing where deer pressure is real. Neither animal is generally enough of a threat to change whether you grow the plant.
Just as important is what does not happen. Haskap has no major insect pest of the fruit itself in most regions, it is not troubled by the borers and cane diseases that afflict other berries, and it needs no acidifying regime and no lime. It comes through winter without protection in places where other fruit needs wrapping. The maintenance list is genuinely short: net the fruit, keep the roots cool and moist, keep the bush open, and remove old wood on a cycle.
If a mature bush is doing badly and none of the symptoms above fit, look back at pollination before reaching for a spray. A flowering bush that sets no fruit is not diseased and no treatment will help it.
