Why a hibiscus attracts sap feeders
A hibiscus is producing soft, thin, high-nitrogen new growth continuously through the growing season, and that is precisely what sap-feeding insects want. Add the still, warm, dry air of a room in winter, with no rain, no wind and no predators, and you have close to ideal breeding conditions. This is why a plant that was clean all summer outdoors can be crawling within a month of coming inside.
Three pests account for almost everything you will meet: whitefly, aphids and mealybugs. All three feed on the same tissue, all three excrete a sticky honeydew that turns black with sooty mold, and all three are far easier to deal with in the first week than in the fourth. The single most valuable habit you can build is turning over a few leaves at the shoot tips every time you water.
The damage pattern is the same across all three: distorted new leaves, sticky patches on lower leaves and on the surface below the plant, buds that yellow and drop before opening, and a general dullness to the foliage. By the time you notice sticky floors, the population has already been building for two or three weeks.
Very little else troubles a hibiscus in a pot. Yellow lower leaves are almost always water or feed, not pest damage, and holes in leaves outdoors are usually caterpillars or slugs passing through rather than a resident problem.

Whitefly: the one that gets away with it indoors
Whitefly are small white insects, about a sixteenth of an inch (1 to 2 mm), that sit under the newest leaves and rise in a cloud when you brush the plant. What you see flying is the adult stage; the damage and the future population are the flat, translucent scales fixed to the leaf underside, which sprays hit poorly and which is why one treatment never works.
Breaking the cycle needs repetition. Treat, then treat again after five to seven days, then again, for at least three rounds, because eggs laid before the first treatment hatch after it. Insecticidal soap or a horticultural oil sprayed thoroughly onto the leaf undersides is enough for a household plant, and a firm blast of water in the shower or with a hose outdoors knocks down a great deal before you spray at all.
Yellow sticky traps hung level with the shoot tips catch adults and, more usefully, tell you when the population is rising or falling. A trap that fills again within a week after treatment means you have not broken the cycle. A trap that stays nearly empty means you have.
Whitefly is far worse in a warm room with still air. Where you can, keep the winter plant somewhere cooler and give it some air movement, both of which slow the breeding rate substantially without any treatment at all.
- Rinse before you spray Take the plant to a shower or outdoors and wash the undersides of the leaves with a firm spray of plain water. This removes a large share of adults and loose nymphs, and it makes any spray that follows much more effective.
- Spray undersides, not the top Apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oil until the leaf undersides are visibly wet, working from below with the nozzle pointing up. Nothing on the upper surface reaches the insects. Do it out of direct sun so the leaves do not scorch while wet.
- Repeat three times at five to seven days Each round kills what has hatched since the last one. Stopping after a single visible improvement is the most common reason whitefly comes back within a fortnight.
- Hang a trap and watch it Put a yellow sticky trap at shoot-tip height and check it weekly. A steadily emptier trap is your evidence the cycle is broken; a trap refilling fast means another round is due.
Aphids on buds, and why they cost you flowers
Aphids gather in dense clusters on the softest tissue: the last inch of a growing shoot, the stalk of a swelling bud, and the bud itself. They are green, black or pale brown, slow moving, and easy to see once you look. On a hibiscus their real cost is not the leaves but the buds, because a colony on a bud stalk will make that bud yellow and drop before it ever opens.
For a small outbreak, physical removal works completely and immediately. Squash the cluster between finger and thumb, or wipe it off with a damp cloth, and check the same shoot two days later. Aphids reproduce quickly but they do not hide the way mealybugs do, so a plant checked weekly rarely gets beyond this stage.
For a plant that is covered, wash it down first, then spray with insecticidal soap, paying attention to the growing tips and the joints where buds attach. Repeat after a week. Outdoors in summer, ladybirds and their larvae will often clear an infestation for you within a fortnight, so hold off on any spray on a plant standing outside unless the colonies are growing week on week.
Curled, puckered new leaves that never straighten out are old aphid damage. The leaf will not recover its shape, but new growth after treatment comes out normal, which is how you confirm the problem is actually gone.
Mealybugs: slow, hidden and the hardest to finish
Mealybugs look like small blobs of white cotton wool wedged into leaf joints, along the midrib under a leaf, and at the point where stems fork. They move very slowly, protect themselves and their eggs with a waxy coating that water and most sprays run straight off, and they will happily live at the compost surface and on the roots where you cannot see them at all.
Because of that coating, contact treatment has to be physical. Touch each colony with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, which dissolves the wax and kills what is under it on contact. On a heavily infested plant, work over the whole plant joint by joint, then follow with a horticultural oil spray to catch the mobile young stages, and repeat the whole inspection weekly for a month.
A month of weekly checks sounds excessive and it is what the pest requires. Mealybug populations recover from a handful of survivors in hidden crevices, and almost every reported failure is a plant that was treated twice and then left alone. If a plant is still producing new colonies after six weeks of proper treatment, and it is one plant among several, cutting your losses protects the rest of the collection.
Check any new plant before it joins the others, and keep it apart for a fortnight. Mealybugs almost always arrive on an incoming plant rather than appearing spontaneously, and a fortnight of separation is far cheaper than a season of cotton buds.
Sooty mold is the black film that grows on honeydew, not a disease of the plant. It does not need its own treatment. Deal with the insect producing the honeydew, then wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and the black film will not return.
Keeping a record that catches it earlier next time
Note the date you first see each pest and the date you finished treating. Over two seasons the pattern becomes obvious and predictable: whitefly appears within weeks of bringing the plant indoors, aphids arrive with the first strong spring growth, and mealybugs show up after a new plant joins the group.
Once you can predict the week, you can inspect deliberately instead of reactively. A five-minute check of leaf undersides in the week the plant comes indoors, repeated weekly for a month, catches nearly everything at the stage where a rinse and one spray is enough.
Note which plant it started on as well. In a group of pots the infestation almost always has a source, and the same plant is often the source twice.
