How to Turn Hydrangeas Blue or Pink: Soil pH and Aluminum

Blue hydrangeas are not a variety, they are a soil chemistry. Acid soil frees aluminum, the plant takes it up, and the flowers turn blue. Here is how to steer it, and where it will not work.

It is aluminum, not acid, that makes the blue

The pigment in a mophead or lacecap hydrangea flower is the same regardless of color. What changes it is aluminum. When the plant takes aluminum up through its roots and moves it into the flower head, the pigment reads blue. With no aluminum available, the same pigment reads pink.

Soil pH is the control you actually have, because it decides whether aluminum already in your soil is soluble. Below about pH 5.5 aluminum dissolves and the roots can take it up. Above about pH 6.5 it locks into forms the plant cannot reach, and the flowers come pink. Between those two the shrub sits in the muddy middle and you get mauve, or blue and pink heads on the same plant.

This is why adding acid alone sometimes fails. If your soil genuinely has little aluminum in it, dropping the pH gives you an acid soil with nothing to dissolve. In that case you have to supply the aluminum as well, usually as aluminum sulfate, which lowers pH and adds aluminum in one move.

White flowers will not change, and neither will panicles

Before you buy anything, check what you are working with. White hydrangeas have no pigment to shift and stay white no matter what you do to the soil. They may age to green or take on a pink flush as the heads mature, but that is age, not chemistry, and it is not under your control.

The panicle-flowered types, with cone-shaped heads on new wood, also ignore soil pH. They open white or cream and age towards pink or red as the nights cool in late summer. Trying to blue them wastes effort and can acidify the soil past what other plants in the bed will tolerate.

Color steering works on the round mophead heads and the flat lacecap heads. Even there, some plants shift more readily than others: a shrub bred to be strongly pink resists blueing and will only reach a dull mauve however acid you make its soil.

If you cannot tell which kind you have from the flowers, look at the head shape when it opens. A dome or a flat plate with a ring of showy florets responds to pH. A tapering cone does not.

Turning a hydrangea blue

Blueing takes a full season and is easiest in a container, where you control every bit of the growing medium. In open ground you are fighting your native soil, and on chalk or limestone you will lose. Start by testing the soil with a simple kit so you know your actual starting pH rather than guessing.

Work in small steps. Overdoing aluminum sulfate burns roots and can kill a shrub outright, and the damage does not show until the leaves brown at the edges weeks later. Several light applications spaced through the growing season beat one heavy dose every time.

  1. Test the soil first Take a sample from the root zone, not the surface, and test it. If you are already below pH 5.5 and still getting pink flowers, your soil is short of aluminum and you need aluminum sulfate rather than a general acidifier.
  2. Apply aluminum sulfate dilute Dissolve about one tablespoon in a gallon (roughly 15 g in 4.5 liters) of water and drench the root zone. Repeat every three to four weeks from early spring until the heads show color, no more than three or four times in a season.
  3. Water the plant first Never pour an aluminum solution onto dry soil or dry roots. Water the shrub thoroughly the day before so the solution spreads through moist soil instead of concentrating against the roots.
  4. Keep phosphorus low Phosphorus binds aluminum and blocks uptake. Switch to a fertilizer low in the middle number, and stop using bone meal or general-purpose rose feeds around a shrub you are trying to blue.
  5. Mulch with acidic material Pine needles, composted bark or leaf mold from oak hold the pH down between treatments and cost nothing. This is what keeps the color stable once you have got it.

Turning a hydrangea pink

Going the other way is easier because you are only removing aluminum from play, not supplying anything. Garden lime raises the pH and locks the aluminum up. Apply it in autumn and again in early spring, working a light dressing into the soil surface around the shrub and watering it in.

Expect this to take longer than blueing. Lime moves slowly through soil and a shrub that has been blue for years holds enough aluminum in its tissues to keep a violet cast through the following season. Two full years is a realistic timescale for a clean pink in acid ground.

A phosphorus-rich feed helps here, because the phosphorus ties up whatever aluminum is left. This is the one situation where bone meal or a general rose fertilizer is exactly what you want around a hydrangea.

Do not lime a bed shared with acid-loving plants. Rhododendrons, camellias, blueberries and pieris will yellow between the veins and decline, and the damage takes years to undo.

Why the color will not hold, and what to record

Color drifts. Tap water in hard-water areas is alkaline and slowly raises the pH of a container every time you water, which is why a potted blue hydrangea creeps towards mauve over two or three seasons. Concrete paths and house foundations leach lime into the soil beside them, so a shrub planted against a wall almost always runs pinker than one out in the open bed.

Keep a short record each season: the pH you measured, what you applied and when, and the color of the heads when they were fully open. Without it you cannot tell whether the treatment worked, because you are comparing this summer to a memory of the last one. Two seasons of that record tells you exactly how much aluminum your particular soil needs to hold a color.
