How to Plant Japanese Water Iris in Wet, Acid Soil

Japanese water iris wants the opposite of what a bearded iris wants: deep planting, acid soil, and constant moisture while it grows. Getting those three right at planting decides everything after.

The most common way to lose a Japanese water iris is to plant it the way you plant a bearded iris. Bearded iris rhizomes sit half exposed on the surface, in gritty soil, in a bed that dries out hard between rains, and they are perfectly happy in soil that has had lime added to it. Do any of that to Iris ensata and it sulks for a season and then dies.

This is a beardless iris from wet ground. In the wild its relatives grow at the edges of ponds and in seasonally flooded meadows, with their roots in soil that stays saturated from the time growth starts until well after flowering. It has a fibrous, fleshy root system rather than a fat surface rhizome, and that root system has no drought reserve to fall back on. When the soil dries, the plant does not go quietly dormant; it burns the tips of its leaves brown and drops flower buds.

So plant it deep, plant it in acid soil, and plant it somewhere you can keep wet without effort. If you are already growing bearded iris successfully in a hot, sharply drained, alkaline bed, do not put this plant next to it. They are not interchangeable, and a bed that suits one is close to lethal for the other.

Acid soil, and keeping lime out of the bed

Japanese water iris needs acid soil, roughly pH 5.0 to 6.5, and it shows you when it is not getting it. The classic symptom is pale, yellow-green leaves with darker green veins running through them, worst on the newest growth, on a plant that is otherwise watered and fed. That is iron locked up by alkalinity, not a lack of fertilizer, and adding more feed makes it worse rather than better.

The practical work is mostly about what you keep away from the plant. Never lime the bed. Skip bone meal and wood ash, both of which push the pH up. Avoid planting tight against a new concrete foundation, a mortared wall or a freshly laid path, because lime leaches out of fresh concrete for years. If your tap water is hard, collect rainwater for this plant where you can; over several seasons hard water alone will drift a container mix out of range.

To bring soil down into range before planting, work in generous quantities of acidic organic matter: composted pine bark, pine needles, leaf mold from oak or beech, or peat-free acidic potting mix. On a stubbornly alkaline site, stop fighting it and grow the plant in a large container or a lined bed filled with ericaceous mix instead. That is a far more reliable answer than trying to acidify a whole border every year.

Depth, spacing and the actual planting

Plants arrive either as potted clumps in leaf or as bare divisions with the leaves cut back to a fan. Bare divisions must not be allowed to dry out for even an hour. If you cannot plant them at once, stand the roots in a bucket of water and keep them there until you can.

  1. Prepare a wide hole, not a deep one Dig out an area about 12 inches (30 cm) across and a spade deep, and fork acidic compost or composted bark through the base and the soil you took out. The roots run sideways more than down, so width matters more than depth.
  2. Set the crown 2 inches (5 cm) under Find the line where the white leaf bases turn green. That line should end up roughly 2 inches (5 cm) below the finished soil surface. This is much deeper than a bearded iris and it is deliberate: the plant pulls itself upward every year and needs the burial to start with.
  3. Spread the roots out flat Fan the roots outward and downward over a low mound of soil in the bottom of the hole rather than cramming them into a hole the size of the root ball. Fill in, firm with your hands, and leave no air pockets around the roots.
  4. Space at 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) A single fan becomes a clump a foot and a half across within three seasons. Planting tighter than this looks better in year one and forces you to divide a year earlier than you otherwise would.
  5. Water in hard, then keep it wet Soak the plant in with several gallons, enough to puddle. For the first month treat it as a bog plant and never let the surface dry, whatever the weather is doing.
  6. Mulch with something acidic Lay 2 inches (5 cm) of pine bark, pine needles or leaf mold over the root area, kept an inch (2 to 3 cm) clear of the leaf fans themselves. It holds moisture, keeps the soil cool and slowly acidifies as it breaks down.

Sun, siting and growing it in a container

Give this plant full sun in a cool or temperate climate: six hours minimum, and eight is better. Flowering falls off sharply in shade, and a shaded plant produces long, soft, leaning foliage that never stands up on its own. In a genuinely hot climate, morning sun with shade through the hottest part of the afternoon is the better trade, because the leaves scorch when heat and dry air arrive together.

A pond margin, a bog bed or the low, wet corner that nothing else tolerates are all ideal, with one condition: the water level must be one you can change. The plant is happy with an inch or two of water over the crown while it is growing, and it must not stay there through winter. If the site is permanently flooded, plant on a shelf or a raised pocket instead so that the winter water sits below the crown.

Container growing works very well and gives you complete control of both the pH and the water. Use a large pot with drainage holes, fill it with an ericaceous mix bulked out with composted bark, and stand it in a shallow tray or saucer through the growing season, topping the tray up so the pot always has water to draw on. Lift the pot out of the tray once the leaves start to yellow and stand it somewhere it drains freely for the winter.

The single rule that separates a thriving clump from a dead one: water to the crown while it is in leaf, no standing water once it is dormant. Everything else about this plant is negotiable. That is not.

What to write down at planting time

Note the date you planted, exactly where each fan went, and how many fans went into each position. Japanese water iris disappears completely in winter, leaving bare ground with nothing to mark it, and every year gardeners put a spade through a dormant clump they forgot was there. A sketch of the bed with positions marked is worth more than any label, because labels fade and get moved.

Record the pH of the bed before you amended it and what you added, so that when you test again in two years you can see which direction it is drifting. Add the depth you set the crowns at. When you lift the clump to divide it in a few years you will want to compare how far it has risen against where it started, and that number tells you whether your planting depth was right for your soil.
