Bright but out of direct sun
Ivy will survive in surprisingly poor light, which is why it gets put in corridors and bathrooms. Surviving and looking good are different things. It wants bright indirect light, the sort you get a few feet back from an unshaded window or directly at a north facing one.
Direct midday sun through glass is the other extreme and burns it. The leaves go pale, then develop dry brown patches that never green up again. A west facing window in summer is the classic place this happens.

Why variegated ivy turns plain green
The white and cream parts of a variegated leaf carry no chlorophyll and contribute nothing to feeding the plant. In low light, shoots that happen to carry more green grow faster than the rest, because they can actually photosynthesise. Within a season those green shoots take over.
This is reversion, and it does not undo itself. Moving the plant back into good light stops new green shoots appearing but will not restore markings to the growth you already have. The only fix is to cut the plain green shoots out at their base, right back into marked growth, as soon as you notice them.
The practical rule is that the more white a plant carries, the more light it needs and the slower it grows. Heavily marked ivy is not a low light plant, whatever the label on the pot said.
Check the newest growth, not the oldest, when judging light. Leaves that emerge smaller and greener than the ones below them are telling you the position is too dark, months before the plant looks wrong overall.
Temperature and air
Ivy prefers to be cooler than most houseplants. It is happiest between about 50F and 68F (10C to 20C) and holds its color better in an unheated room than a warm one. Heat with dry air is what brings the spider mites.
It also wants air moving. A still, closed room is where leaf spot and mites both take hold, so a position where a door opens regularly or a window is cracked in mild weather is worth more than any misting.

Moving it outside for the summer
A summer outside does ivy a great deal of good. It builds dense growth, and the outdoor humidity and rain knock back the mite population that built up over winter.
- Wait until nights are reliably mild Move it out once night temperatures stay above about 50F (10C). Ivy is hardy enough that this is about avoiding shock rather than frost, but a plant that has spent winter indoors is soft.
- Start in full shade for a week Even a bright indoor plant is adapted to far less light than the open air. A week in deep shade, then a week in dappled light, prevents the bleaching that happens in a single afternoon otherwise.
- Settle it in dappled shade, not sun Under a tree, on a north facing step, or behind taller pots. Outdoor summer sun will scorch ivy just as glass does.
- Inspect it before it comes back in In autumn, rinse both leaf surfaces and check for scale and mites before it rejoins your other plants. Bringing an infested plant indoors in autumn is how most winter mite outbreaks start.
Planting it in the ground, and where not to
Outdoors in open ground, ivy is a different proposition. It is invasive across large parts of North America, Australia and elsewhere, escaping gardens into woodland where it smothers ground flora and climbs into the canopy. Check what your own region says before planting any into soil, and where it is listed, keep it in containers only.
Even where it is not restricted, keep it off two things. Do not let it climb trees: the weight and the sail area make a mature tree far more likely to come down in a storm, and the ivy shades out the tree's own foliage as it reaches the crown. And keep it off house walls, where the clinging roots work into mortar joints and render, block gutters, and hide damp against the wall.
Give it a free standing fence, a bank, or a wire frame instead, and cut it back to a hard line twice a year. Ivy climbs by clinging roots that only form on rough surfaces, so a smooth wire or post keeps it controllable in a way that brickwork never is.
Never dump ivy trimmings on a compost pile at the edge of a wood or on waste ground. Stems root where they touch soil, and a barrow of prunings is how it gets out of the garden in the first place.
