Yellow leaves with green veins: the commonest complaint
Interveinal chlorosis, where the leaf blade goes pale yellow while the veins stay distinctly green, is the signature jabuticaba problem. It shows first and worst on the newest growth. It means iron is present in the soil but chemically unavailable because the pH has risen above the range the tree can work in, and it is not solved by more fertilizer.
Test the soil rather than treating blind. If the reading is above about 6.5, correct it: elemental sulfur worked into the mulch layer over a wide area, repeated and re-tested, is the slow proper fix. Chelated iron applied to the soil or as a foliar spray greens the tree up within a couple of weeks and buys time while the pH comes down, but on its own it is a treadmill you will be on every season.
Check your water as well as your soil. In hard water regions the irrigation itself pushes pH up over years. Switching to collected rainwater, or at least alternating, stops the drift.

Fruit flies and wasps: a hygiene problem more than a spray problem
Because the fruit sits low on the trunk and ferments quickly, jabuticaba is a magnet for fruit flies, vinegar flies and wasps. The larvae get into fruit that has already begun to soften, and a single split fruit left on the bark can seed a population that ruins the next flush.
The control that actually works is picking discipline. Go over the whole trunk every day or two during a flush, remove everything ripe and everything past it, and take the culls off site rather than dropping them at the base. Fallen fruit under the tree is the breeding ground, and clearing it is worth more than any spray.
Bait traps hung near the tree during a flush reduce the adult population usefully and let you see when numbers are rising. Fine mesh sleeves around the trunk are possible on a small tree and are the only way to get clean fruit under heavy pressure, but they make picking awkward and have to come off and on constantly.
Never leave over ripe fruit on the trunk to fall on its own. It is the single decision that turns an occasional fruit fly into a permanent infestation of the tree.
Roots: too wet and too dry both kill
Root rot appears as a general dullness and wilting that does not respond to watering, often with lower leaves yellowing and dropping, and a sour smell if you scrape back the mulch. It comes from soil that stays saturated, whether from a heavy clay layer, a compacted pan under the planting hole or simply too much irrigation on a tree that never dries. Pull the mulch back to let the surface dry, stop watering entirely until the top inches dry out, and address the drainage properly before the next season.
The opposite failure is more common and looks quite different: a sudden mass drop of leaves and fruit a day or two after a hot dry spell. Shallow roots under thin mulch cook and dry, and the tree sheds everything it cannot support. Recovery takes months. The prevention is depth of mulch and consistency of watering, not a rescue after the fact.
Damage from cultivation belongs in the same category. Digging, forking or planting under the canopy severs feeder roots inches below the surface and shows up as fruit drop a week later, with no obvious cause unless you remember what you did.
Bark damage is permanent, and it costs you fruit
The trunk and the older main limbs are the bearing surface. Anything that removes or wounds that bark removes fruiting sites, and unlike a branch tip they are not replaced. String trimmer nicks around the base, mower contact, a stake tie left on until it girdles, bark scraped off during a move, a trunk wrapped or painted: each leaves a patch that will never flower again.
So the preventative measures are boring and absolute. Maintain a wide mulched circle so no machine ever comes near the trunk. Remove stakes and ties after the first year. Do not clean, brush, wash or strip the flaking bark, and do not tie anything around the trunk. Lichen and moss on the bark are harmless and can stay.
Scale insects and mealybugs sometimes settle on the trunk, and the temptation is to scrub them off. Do not. Treat with a horticultural oil applied gently by spray, and accept a slower result rather than trading this year's pest for permanent loss of bearing wood.
Keeping a record that shortens the diagnosis
Log each problem with the date, what the tree looked like, what the weather had been doing for the previous week, and what you did about it. Nearly every jabuticaba disorder is environmental and lagged: the cause happened days or weeks before the symptom, and without dates the connection is invisible.
Record soil pH at least once a year, always at the same time of year and from the same spot, and record the source of your irrigation water. A pH log spanning three seasons will tell you whether your ground is drifting alkaline long before the leaves do.
