Never let the root run go dry
The single most useful thing you can know about this tree is that it hates a dry root run and shows it immediately in the leaves. The roots are fine, fibrous and shallow, concentrated in the top twelve inches (30 cm) of soil, which is exactly the layer that dries first. There is no deep reserve to draw on. When that layer dries, the leaf margins go crisp and brown within days and stay that way until leaf fall.
So water by soil moisture, not by schedule. Push a finger two inches (5 cm) into the soil under the mulch. If it is dry at that depth, water; if it is cool and damp, leave it. In a hot, breezy week an established tree in the open may need a thorough soaking twice a week; in a cool, still, cloudy week it may need none at all.
When you do water, water properly. Two or three full cans, or a hose left trickling at the base for fifteen minutes, delivered slowly enough to soak in rather than run off. A brief sprinkle wets the mulch and nothing else, and it trains roots upward into the driest zone. Watering in the early morning or the evening loses less to evaporation and lets leaves that got splashed dry off.
The one exception to keeping it moist is winter. Once the leaves are down the tree uses very little water, and soil that stays saturated through the cold months rots roots. Established trees in the ground need no winter watering at all in most climates.

Mulch is doing more work than feeding ever will
A two to three inch (5 to 8 cm) layer of leaf mold, composted bark or garden compost over the root area is the most valuable annual job on this tree. It holds moisture in the layer where the roots live, keeps the soil several degrees cooler in summer, suppresses the grass and weeds that compete for the same shallow water, and slowly feeds the tree as it breaks down.
Spread it out to at least the width of the canopy, which is roughly where the feeding roots reach, and top it up once a year in autumn or early spring. Keep a clear ring of two or three inches (5 to 8 cm) around the trunk itself, because mulch piled against bark keeps it permanently wet and invites rot at the base.
Do not dig or hoe under a Japanese maple. Those surface roots are easily cut, and every cut root is a bit less water reaching the leaves in the heat of summer. If weeds come through the mulch, pull them by hand or smother them with more mulch. Grass right up to the trunk is worse than bare soil, and mowing near the trunk is a common cause of bark wounds that never heal properly.
Do not use fresh grass clippings or uncomposted wood chips right against the soil surface as a first mulch layer. Grass clippings mat and go anaerobic; fresh chips tie up nitrogen at the surface. Composted bark or leaf mold avoids both problems.
Feeding: much less than you think
Japanese maples are slow growers by nature and a heavily fed one is a worse tree, not a better one. Excess nitrogen produces long, soft, sappy shoots that scorch in the first hot wind, snap in storms, attract aphids and color poorly in autumn. Most trees in reasonable garden soil under an annual mulch never need fertilizer at all.
If growth has genuinely stalled and the leaves are small and pale, apply a balanced slow release fertilizer once in early spring, at half the rate on the label, spread over the root area and watered in. Do not feed after early summer. Late feeding pushes soft growth that will not harden before the first frosts and dies back over winter.
Pale leaves with dark green veins are a different problem and feeding will not fix it. That is iron unavailable in soil that is too alkaline. Mulch with acidic material such as pine needles or composted bark, and water with rainwater rather than hard tap water where you can. In a badly alkaline garden the durable answer is a pot with acidic compost.
Growing one in a large pot for many years
This is one of the few small trees that will live happily in a container for a decade or more, and in gardens with heavy clay, alkaline soil, or nothing but exposed sun, a pot is genuinely the better option. It lets you move the tree into shade for the worst of the summer and out of the wind, which is exactly the control the plant needs.
Use a pot at least sixteen inches (40 cm) across to begin with, with generous drainage holes, and something heavy such as glazed ceramic rather than a light plastic pot that blows over. Fill with a loam based compost mixed roughly two parts to one with composted bark or leaf mold. Loam gives the weight and the buffering; the bark gives the open structure and the slight acidity.
The trade-off is watering. A potted maple in full leaf on a hot day can empty its compost in a single afternoon, and one missed day in a heat wave shows as brown margins for the rest of the season. Stand the pot where you pass it daily, sit it on feet so water drains freely, and consider grouping it with other pots so they shade each other's sides.
Repot every two or three years in late winter while the tree is bare, either into the next size up or back into the same pot after trimming the outer inch (2.5 cm) of roots and replacing that compost. Feed a potted tree lightly, once in spring with a slow release feed, because there is no soil life resupplying it.
What to keep a note of each year
Three records make the difference between managing this tree and reacting to it. First, the date each summer when you first notice crisp brown leaf edges, and what the weather had been doing for the previous week. Second, how often you actually watered in each month, which is far more revealing than any intended schedule. Third, the date of autumn color and leaf fall, which tells you whether the tree ran out of water early or finished the season properly.
For a potted tree, add the date of the last repot and the pot size. It is remarkably easy to lose track and leave a tree three years past the point where it needed more room, and the first symptom of that is a tree that wilts every hot afternoon no matter how much you water it.
