Curing Job's Tears: Drying Beads Down Hard, Hulling the Grain Form and Storing Both

Freshly picked beads still carry moisture inside a shell that seals it in. Curing is what turns a bucket of picked beads into grain that stores or craft beads that will not split.

Why curing is not optional here

A bead that feels rock hard between your fingers on the day you pick it can still be at fifteen to twenty percent internal moisture. The shell is nearly airtight, which is exactly what makes this crop store so well once dry and exactly what makes it go moldy if you bag it too soon. Sealed damp, the kernel inside ferments, and you find out weeks later when the beads smell sour or rattle with a shrunken, discolored kernel.

Curing means holding the beads somewhere warm, dry and moving with air until the internal moisture is down to around twelve percent, which for a home grower means somewhere between two and four weeks depending on the weather. There is no way to hurry it that does not risk splitting the shells, and split shells are useless for stringing and prone to insect entry in storage.

How to set the drying up

Spread the beads no more than one layer deep on window screens, mesh trays or slatted racks, somewhere out of direct sun with air moving on both sides. Direct sun on a full tray raises the surface temperature fast enough to crack the shells while the middle is still wet. A shed, a covered porch, a spare room with the door open or a warm dry loft all work. Aim for 70F to 85F (21C to 29C) with a fan running if the air is still.

Stir or shake the trays every day or two for the first week, then every few days. Any bead that develops a fuzzy patch, a soft spot or a sour smell comes out immediately, along with its neighbors, because mold spreads through a tray quickly once it starts.

Testing whether it is actually dry

Three tests together are reliable. First, sound: pour a handful from one hand to the other. Properly cured beads click sharply against one another; damp ones sound dull and muffled. Second, weight: put a measured hundred beads on a kitchen scale every few days and write the figure down. When the number stops falling over two consecutive readings, the dry-down is finished. Third, on the grain form only, cut one kernel in half with a knife. It should split cleanly and be uniformly chalky white right through, with no translucent or rubbery core.

The bite test that works on other grains is a poor idea on this crop. On the bead form you will chip a tooth; on the grain form the shell defeats you long before you learn anything about the kernel.

If a spell of humid weather stalls the drying, move the trays somewhere heated rather than waiting it out. Beads held at high humidity for weeks pick up a musty smell that never comes out, and on the craft form it dulls the surface permanently.

Hulling the soft-shelled grain form

Only the soft-shelled form is worth hulling. Once fully cured, its shell is brittle and comes away with modest pressure, and a home grower has several workable options depending on quantity.

  1. Check brittleness first Press one cured bead with the flat of a knife on a board. The shell should crack and flake off in pieces, leaving a whole white kernel. If it crushes the kernel instead, the beads are not dry enough; give them another week.
  2. For a handful, use a knife and board Press each bead until the shell cracks, then rub it between your palms to release the kernel. Slow but it produces almost no broken grain, which matters if you are keeping some for seed.
  3. For a bucketful, roll under a board Spread a layer on a hard floor and roll a heavy board or a rolling pin over them with steady weight, not impact. The shells crack in bulk. Repeat two or three passes rather than pressing harder once.
  4. Winnow the chaff away Pour the cracked mixture from one bucket into another in front of a fan or a breeze, from about waist height. The light shell fragments blow clear and the heavy kernels drop. Two or three passes clean it fully.
  5. Sort out the seed you will sow Before hulling, set aside the largest, most perfect whole beads from the best clumps. Save these unhulled; the intact shell protects the kernel through winter storage far better than a hulled grain.

Storing, and finishing the craft form

Store cured hulled grain in an airtight jar in a cool, dark cupboard. At twelve percent moisture it keeps a year without trouble and two years without much loss. Freezing a jar for three days before it goes into the cupboard kills any insect eggs that came in with it, which is worth doing routinely with this crop. Check jars after the first fortnight for condensation on the inside of the lid; if you see any, the grain went in too wet and needs to come out and dry again.

The hard bead form needs no hulling and no processing at all beyond curing. Once dry, the beads keep for decades. If you are stringing them, drill after curing rather than before, using a fine bit and light pressure, because a bead with any residual moisture inside will split around the hole. Sort by size and color before drilling; that is the step people skip and then regret.

Write the year on every jar and every bag of beads, and note which clump or row the contents came from. Job's Tears seed germinates well for two to three years and then falls away sharply, so a dated jar saves you sowing a row of seed that was never going to come up.
