Three things that look like disasters and are not
More jujubes are wrongly diagnosed than are genuinely sick. The tree's normal habits look alarming if you expect it to behave like an apple, and acting on that alarm, by digging out a live tree, feeding heavily or spraying, does real damage. Rule these three out before treating anything.
First: a bare, gray tree in late spring while the rest of the garden is green. This is normal. Jujubes break dormancy very late, sometimes not until early summer. Scratch the bark; green underneath means alive. Second: a litter of thin feathery twigs on the ground in autumn. Also normal. The fruiting shoots are annual and drop with the leaves. Third: shoots appearing in the lawn some distance from the trunk. Normal for the species, though they do need dealing with, which is a separate matter from the tree being unwell.

Pests that actually damage the crop
The main real problem is internal fruit damage from larvae that tunnel into ripening fruit, leaving small entry holes, browning around the stone and premature drop. You usually discover it by cutting a fruit open rather than from the outside. The life cycle depends on fallen fruit, which is why sanitation outperforms anything you can spray.
Beyond that, expect ants and wasps on over-ripe and split fruit, occasional scale on neglected trunks and older branches showing as small limpet-like bumps and sticky leaves below, and birds taking crisp fruit in dry seasons. Leaf-eating caterpillars appear from time to time but rarely reach a level worth acting on, because a jujube carries far more leaf than it needs.
- Clear every fallen fruit, every visit Pick up windfalls and remove them from the garden rather than composting them near the tree. This breaks the cycle of fruit-boring larvae more effectively than any treatment and costs nothing.
- Strip the tree at the end of the season Remove shriveled, split and mummified fruit still hanging after harvest. Overwintering fruit on the tree is a reservoir for next year's problems.
- Cut a sample of fruit open weekly during ripening Slice five or six fruits from different parts of the tree. Brown tunnels or larvae tell you to bring the harvest forward and pick everything at the crisp stage rather than waiting for it to wrinkle.
- Deal with scale in the dormant season Scrub visible scale off bark with a stiff brush while the tree is bare, or apply a horticultural oil at the dormant rate. Scale is far easier to reach with no leaves in the way.
- Net only if birds are actually taking fruit Birds are inconsistent on jujubes. If you lose fruit, net individual branches at the point color starts rather than trying to cover a whole tree, securing the netting so birds cannot get inside it.
A jujube rarely justifies a spray program. The tree's own toughness, plus removing fallen and mummified fruit, handles the great majority of pressure. Reach for treatment only when you have identified a specific pest by cutting fruit open or inspecting bark.
Suckers: the real ongoing problem
The chronic difficulty with jujubes is not disease, it is root suckering. Shoots come up from roots running out under lawn, paths and neighboring beds, sometimes fifteen feet (5 m) away. On a grafted tree these are rootstock: thornier, more vigorous, and bearing small poor fruit. Ignore them for a couple of years and you have a thicket around a tree.
Suckering is worsened by root damage, so digging, trenching or rotavating within the root zone is asking for a flush of them. Deal with each sucker while it is green and soft: scrape back the soil, find where it joins the root, and tear or cut it off flush at that junction. Mowing a sucker only removes the top and it comes back thicker. Chemical treatment of a sucker is a bad idea because it shares a root system with the tree you want.
Poor cropping when nothing is visibly wrong
A healthy-looking jujube with a disappointing crop almost always has one of three causes. Too much shade, in which case the fruit that does set stays starchy and never sweetens. Too much feeding and watering, which pushes leaf and shoot at the expense of flower. Or simply not enough summer heat, which is a climate limit rather than a fault and shows up as a crop that ripens late, thinly and without sugar.
Age is the fourth possibility and the easiest to misread. A grafted jujube usually crops in its second or third year, but a seedling tree, which may be what a sucker-grown or unnamed plant is, can take many years longer and may never fruit well. If a mature tree in full sun on lean soil has never carried a decent crop, consider whether it is actually a seedling or rootstock rather than a grafted variety.
A problem log worth keeping
Note the date you first cut open a fruit and found damage, and what proportion of the sample was affected. That single number, repeated each year, tells you whether your sanitation is working far more honestly than an impression does.
Alongside it, record the dates and locations of suckers, the date the tree broke bud, and the date of the first colored fruit. Together these make a picture of the tree's year, and when something genuinely goes wrong you will be able to see that it is a departure from your own tree's pattern rather than guessing against a general description.
