Brown flowers: frost, nearly every time
The most frequent complaint about kobus magnolia is that the flowers turned brown almost as soon as they opened. In the overwhelming majority of cases this is frost, not disease. The pattern is unmistakable: it happens all over the tree at once, following a clear cold night, and the affected tepals go translucent first and brown within a day.
Compare that with a disease pattern, which appears on scattered flowers over several days, often with spotting that starts small and spreads, and continues in mild weather. If your browning arrived overnight and stopped, stop looking for a spray. There isn't one, and the tree is unharmed.
Damage confined to one side of the tree, the side facing the sunrise, is the same story with an extra clue: those flowers thawed fastest. It confirms that the display would be more reliable in a position shaded until mid-morning.

Scale insects, and the sooty mold that follows
Scale is the one genuine insect pest that matters on magnolias. You notice the consequence before the cause: leaves and anything parked under the tree turn sticky with honeydew, and a black sooty film develops on that stickiness. Turn a leaf over, or look along the undersides of two-year-old twigs, and you find rows of small immobile bumps, brown or off-white, that scrape off with a thumbnail.
A light infestation on a large tree does not need treating and will be held down by parasitic wasps and ladybird larvae if you are not spraying broad-spectrum insecticides that kill them too. On a small tree, or a heavy infestation, the timing that matters is the crawler stage in early summer, when the young are mobile and unprotected. That is the only window when contact treatments work; the adult scale is armoured and shrugs them off.
The sooty mold itself is harmless to the tree beyond shading the leaves. It is growing on the honeydew, not on the plant. Deal with the scale and the mold weathers off over the following season without any treatment.
Dieback, coral spot, and wounds that will not close
Twigs and small branches dying back, often with small coral-pink pimples on the dead bark, is a common sight on stressed or badly pruned magnolias. The fungus behind those pimples is largely an opportunist: it colonises wood that is already dead or wounded. Finding it means you should be asking what killed the wood, not just treating the fungus.
The usual answers are a pruning cut made at the wrong time of year, a flush cut that removed the branch collar, a tear where a branch broke, or a trimmer wound at the base. Cut the affected wood out well below the discolored tissue, in midsummer, into clearly live wood at a proper collar, and dispose of the prunings rather than leaving them stacked nearby.
A wound that is still open and dark years after it was made tells you the tree does not have the resources to close it. That is a water and root problem, not a fungicide problem. Mulch widely, stop all digging over the root plate, and water deeply through dry spells for two or three seasons.
Sterilize pruning tools between trees, and never prune out diseased wood in wet weather. Spores move on wet surfaces, and a magnolia's slow-sealing wounds are exactly the entry point they need.
Yellow leaves, and telling the causes apart
Yellowing is a symptom with at least four causes, and the pattern tells you which. Pale leaves with veins that stay distinctly green is iron chlorosis, meaning the soil is too alkaline for the tree to take up iron. Chelated iron corrects it within weeks; acidifying mulches such as composted bark or pine needles, plus avoiding lime anywhere near the root area, prevent the return.
Whole leaves going uniformly yellow and dropping in summer is water, in one direction or the other. Dig a small hole a spade deep just outside the drip line. Dust dry means drought and needs a deep slow soak. Wet and airless means waterlogging, and the answer is to stop watering entirely and improve drainage away from the tree rather than digging near it.
Yellowing on one side of the crown only, or a section of branches thinning while the rest looks well, points at localised root damage: a trench, a path laid, vehicles parked, or soil piled over the roots on that side. Think back over the last two or three years, because the symptoms lag the cause badly on this species.
Keeping a problem log
When you see something, write down the date, which part of the tree, and what the weather had been doing for the preceding week. On a tree whose symptoms lag their causes by seasons, that context is what turns a mystery into an obvious answer later.
Also record any work done anywhere near the tree, including work by other people: a trench for a cable, a delivery lorry on the grass, a new path. Those entries are the ones that explain a crown thinning three years afterwards, and they are precisely the ones nobody remembers without a note.
