Konjac Pests and Diseases: Soft Rot, Leaf Spot, Slugs and Storage Losses

Almost every konjac loss is corm rot, and it is decided by drainage and by how carefully you handle the corm. Learn the early signs on the stalk base, plus the leaf spots, slugs and storage molds worth acting on.

Bacterial soft rot is the one that matters

If you lose a konjac plant, this is almost certainly what took it. Soft rot bacteria enter through wounds in the corm or the base of the stalk and spread fastest in warm, waterlogged soil. The plant looks entirely healthy, then over three or four days in a wet spell the stalk yellows, the base turns dark and water-soaked, and the whole leaf keels over. Lift the corm and you find gray-brown mush with a distinctive foul, sour smell.

There is no cure once it is inside the corm. Everything you can do is preventive: plant only firm, unwounded corms, never plant into ground that puddles, avoid forking near the plant during the season, water at the soil surface rather than over the crown, and cure and inspect corms properly before storage.

When you find a rotted plant, lift it with the soil immediately around it and put both in the bin rather than the compost pile. Do not replant konjac in the same spot for three years, and wash any tool that touched the rotted tissue before it goes near another corm.

Losing the shoot in spring

The plant is at its most vulnerable in the fortnight after the shoot breaks the surface. A single emerging tip carries the entire season, and slugs and snails will take it clean off at soil level overnight. There is no recovery from that; the corm sits dormant for the rest of the year and comes out of the ground lighter than it went in.

Ring each planting position as soon as you mark it, before anything shows, using whatever barrier you trust, and check by torchlight on damp evenings through the emergence period. Once the stalk has hardened and the blade has opened, the risk drops away sharply and you can stop.

Cutworms and, in some gardens, mice and voles will also take a shoot or gnaw a stored corm. If shoots vanish with no slime trail, look for a chewed stub just below the surface and search the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil nearby.

Leaf problems and what is worth treating

Fungal leaf spot shows as round brown patches ringed in yellow, usually on the lower leaflets first, and it spreads when the foliage stays wet overnight or when plants are crowded. It rarely kills a plant outright, but every square inch of blade it takes out is corm growth you do not get. Remove the worst-affected leaflets, mulch to stop soil splashing upward, space plants properly, and water in the morning at the base only.

Anthracnose is more serious because it attacks the stalk itself, producing sunken dark lesions that weaken it until the leaf topples. A stalk with lesions around more than half its circumference will not last the season; if it fails in late summer, lift the corm early and cure it rather than leaving it in the ground under a dead leaf.

Not every mark is a disease. Crisp brown leaflet margins with no spots or halos are scorch from too much direct sun or dry wind, and the answer is shade and shelter rather than a spray. Even yellowing late in the season is normal dormancy and needs nothing at all.

Root and soil trouble

Root-knot nematodes are worth knowing about because their damage is invisible until you lift. Above ground the plant is simply small, pale and slow despite decent soil and watering; below ground the roots carry beaded swellings and the corm stays stubbornly light. Infested corms should be discarded rather than replanted, since the nematodes travel with them into clean ground.

The defense is rotation and organic matter. Do not grow konjac in the same position more than two seasons running, keep the soil rich in compost so root systems recover quickly, and lift and inspect every autumn instead of leaving corms in place indefinitely. Yearly lifting is the single habit that catches nematodes, rot and rodent damage while they are still confined to one plant.

Waterlogging alone, with no pathogen involved, will also finish a corm. Roots suffocate, the leaf yellows from the bottom, and rot follows into the dead tissue. If the bed lies wet after heavy rain, ridge it up next season.

  1. Inspect corms before they go in Firm all over, dry-skinned, no soft patches, no sour smell, no scabbed lesions. Rejecting one doubtful corm is cheaper than losing a bed.
  2. Never fork near a growing plant Surface roots and offsets sit wider than the leaf suggests, and one puncture is enough to let rot in. Weed by hand within a foot (30 cm) of the stalk.
  3. Water the ground, not the plant Morning watering at soil level keeps the stalk base and leaf dry overnight, which is what leaf spot and stalk rot need in order to establish.
  4. Cure before storing, always Seven to ten days of dry curing exposes hidden rot while you can still isolate it, instead of discovering it deep in winter storage when it has spread through the tray.
  5. Rotate the planting position Move konjac to fresh ground every two seasons. Soft rot bacteria and nematodes both persist in soil where a diseased corm grew.

Winter losses in store, and keeping records

More konjac is lost in storage than in the garden, and the losses are avoidable. Blue-green or gray mold on the skin usually starts on a graze or a cut and spreads if corms touch one another; a soft wet patch that darkens and smells sour is soft rot carrying on where it left off. Both are answered by curing properly, packing corms apart in dry sand or shavings with air between them, and checking the whole store every three or four weeks.

Shriveling is the opposite problem. A corm that goes wrinkled and light has lost water to air that is too dry or too warm, and it will sprout weakly in spring. Bury those corms in barely damp sand and move the store somewhere cooler within the 50 to 59F (10 to 15C) band. Below 45F (7C) you swap one problem for another, since chilling injury delays or prevents sprouting entirely.

Keep a simple log of every loss: the date, whether it happened in the ground or in store, the symptom and where that corm was growing. After two or three seasons a pattern appears, and it is almost always specific rather than general, such as one wet corner of the bed accounting for most of the rot, or one storage shelf running too cold. Note the date each shoot emerged as well, since a late shoot from a stored corm is usually a sign of a chilling problem the previous winter.
