The anthracnose question, answered
Dogwood anthracnose is the disease that hollowed out populations of the native flowering dogwood across large parts of its range, killing trees from the lower branches upward over a few seasons. It is the first thing people ask about when they plant a dogwood, and for kousa dogwood the answer is genuinely reassuring: this species carries strong resistance and is only rarely damaged by it.
That resistance is the main practical reason kousa is planted where the native species struggles, particularly in cool, humid, shaded sites at higher elevations where anthracnose pressure is worst. It is resistance, not immunity, and a badly sited tree under constant leaf wetness can still show some infection, but you should not plan your growing around it.
What this means day to day is that you can stop scanning for the classic anthracnose symptoms, which are tan blotches with purple rims on the leaves, dead leaves that hang on through winter, and cankers spreading down the twigs into the main limbs. Spend that attention on the problems below instead.
Powdery mildew, the one that actually shows up
Powdery mildew is the common foliar problem on kousa dogwood. It appears as a dull white or grayish film on the upper leaf surface, usually from midsummer onward, and it thickens through late summer. Badly affected leaves curl, look scorched at the edges and drop early, and a tree that defoliates in this way year after year loses vigor and flowers less.
It thrives in warm days with cool nights and stagnant, humid air, which is why it hits trees planted in still corners, boxed in by walls or crowded by shrubs, far harder than trees in open positions. Unlike most fungal problems it does not need the leaves to be wet, so overhead watering is not the trigger here; poor air movement is.
The practical response is air and vigor rather than spraying. Give the tree room, clear crowding shrubs from around the lower canopy, and keep it properly watered so it is not fighting mildew and drought at once. Rake up and remove fallen infected leaves in autumn. Established trees tolerate mild annual mildew without long-term harm, and a fungicide program on a mature garden tree is rarely worth the effort.

Scorch and stress, which look like disease and are not
The most frequent complaint about kousa dogwood in summer, by a wide margin, is browning leaf edges. This is scorch, a physical response to losing water from the leaves faster than the shallow roots can replace it. It is common on young trees, on trees in windy or reflected-heat positions such as against a south-facing wall or beside paving, and on any tree in a dry spell without mulch.
Scorched tissue does not recover, so treat the appearance of it as information about the previous week rather than something to cure. Water deeply, widen the mulch ring, and if the same tree scorches every year in the same position, accept that the site is marginal and compensate with more consistent watering rather than hoping it will grow out of it.
Root injury produces a different and more alarming pattern: one section of the canopy wilts and browns while the rest looks normal. Look for a cause on that side of the tree, usually a trench, a new path, compaction from stored materials or a season of vehicles parked over the root plate. The tree may recover over several years if the cause is removed, but it will not while it remains.
Wounds at the base of the trunk from mowers and string trimmers are a leading cause of decline in garden dogwoods. A wide mulch ring costs nothing and removes the reason for machinery to go near the bark at all.
Insects, and when to ignore them
Kousa dogwood is also markedly less troubled by dogwood borer than the native species, and the borer usually needs an existing wound to get in. That gives you a clear preventive action: avoid injuring the bark, and avoid unnecessary pruning cuts on the lower trunk and main limbs, which are the entry points borers use.
Scale insects occasionally build up on stressed trees, showing as small fixed bumps on the twigs with sticky honeydew and sooty black mold on the leaves below. Aphids and leaf-eating caterpillars turn up from time to time and rarely matter. On a tree of this size, tolerate light insect damage; the predators that arrive in response are worth more over a season than a spray.
The one thing worth checking each winter is the base of the trunk under the mulch, where voles can strip bark unseen through a long winter. Pull the mulch back, look at the bark all the way round, and put the mulch back with the ring clear of the trunk.
Keep a symptom log
Record the date you first see white mildew film each year, and how far through the canopy it reaches by leaf fall. That single date is the best predictor you have of whether a given summer will be a mildew year, and after two or three seasons it will tell you whether the changes you made to air flow actually worked.
Do the same with scorch: note the week the leaf margins first brown and what the weather had been doing for the ten days before. Paired with your watering notes, that turns a vague sense that the tree suffers in summer into a specific threshold you can plan around next year.
