Water by weight, not by schedule
A kumquat in a small pot dries out quickly in summer and rots quickly in winter, and no fixed watering interval survives both. Learn the weight of the pot instead. Lift it just after a thorough watering, then lift it again when the top two inches (5 cm) are dry. Those two weights are your full and empty marks, and after a fortnight your hand knows them without thinking.
In midsummer, a 14 inch (35 cm) pot in full sun at 85F (29C) will want water most days. In winter, in a cool bright room, the same tree may go two to three weeks. Water thoroughly when you do water, until it runs freely from the base, and never give small daily sips; that wets only the top and leaves the deeper roots dry while the surface stays sour.
Kumquats show water stress in the leaves before the fruit. Leaves that fold along the midrib into a shallow V in the afternoon and open again by morning are telling you the tree is at its limit but coping. Leaves that stay folded overnight, or that go dull and leathery, mean you are already late. Sustained dryness during autumn causes the small fruit to shrivel and stall rather than drop.

Feed hard in growth, stop before autumn
A kumquat sets a very heavy crop relative to its leaf area, and it does it in a small volume of compost with nothing in reserve. Underfeeding shows up as a tree that flowers well, sets well, and then sheds most of the fruitlets six weeks later. Use a proper citrus feed rather than a general fertilizer; the difference is the trace elements, particularly iron, magnesium and manganese, which citrus in pots run short of first.
Feed every two weeks with a high nitrogen citrus feed from the moment new growth extends in spring until midsummer. Then switch to the low nitrogen or winter citrus formulation for the rest of the growing season, and stop feeding entirely once the fruit has set and nights begin to cool. Nitrogen late in the year pushes soft growth that will not harden before cold weather, and soft growth is what dies over winter.
Yellowing tells you which shortage you have. Uniformly pale new leaves are nitrogen. Yellow between green veins on old leaves is magnesium. The same pattern on the youngest leaves is iron, and it usually means the pot has gone alkaline rather than that the feed is wrong. Correct iron with a chelated iron drench and by watering with rainwater, not by adding more of the same feed.
Never feed a dry tree. Water it first, wait an hour, then feed. Fertilizer applied to a dry rootball burns the fine root tips, and in a shallow-rooted kumquat those are most of the working roots.
Thinning, and the years it does not need it
A kumquat naturally carries far more fruit than a tree of its size looks capable of, and in most years you should leave it alone. Unlike a lemon, the individual fruit are tiny, so a heavy crop is a smaller drain per fruit than the sheer numbers suggest. The tree also sheds its own excess in a natural drop a few weeks after flowering.
Thin only in two situations. The first is a young tree in its first or second cropping year, where you should remove most of the fruit to build the framework. The second is a tree that has clearly overset, which you can recognize by fruit growing in tight clusters of five or more with almost no leaf between them. Take those clusters back to two or three fruit each, spread through the tree rather than stripping one branch.
Watch for alternate bearing. A kumquat that crops itself to exhaustion one year will flower thinly the next. If you got a huge crop last year and the tree is thin on new growth this spring, feed it well and thin harder than usual; the aim is a consistent moderate crop every year rather than a spectacular one every other year.
Sun, shelter and the winter position
Six hours of direct sun is the minimum and more is better. Kumquat skin sweetens on light and warmth, and this is the whole point of the fruit, since the skin is the part you eat. A tree in a shady corner produces fruit that is technically ripe and disappointing to eat.
Shade the pot rather than the tree in high summer. A dark container in full sun reaches compost temperatures above 95F (35C), which damages the fine roots and causes the tree to wilt while the compost is wet. Slip the pot inside a larger empty one, or stand a low plant in front of it.
Because it flowers late in summer, a kumquat spends the whole of autumn and much of winter with fruit on it. Keep it in the brightest place it can be, outdoors as late as your frosts allow and then somewhere cool and light. A dim warm room stalls the fruit and it never finishes.
What to record
Two records make the difference between guessing and knowing. The first is the date the tree started its spring flush and the date you started feeding, because a gap between them is the single most common reason for a light crop. The second is a rough fruit count at the end of the season alongside a note on how the tree looked the following spring.
Add the pot weight in pounds or kilograms at full and at dry if you want to remove the guesswork entirely from watering; a bathroom scale takes thirty seconds and you never argue with yourself about it again. Note the date you last repotted or root pruned, since a kumquat holds its final pot for years and it is easy to lose count.
