Overview
Summertime is an iceberg-type lettuce from the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station (J.R. Baggett, 1989) that was selected to keep heading when the weather turns warm. The plant stays low and compact, and the head stays mild rather than turning bitter as many crispheads do once days lengthen. Tolerance to bolting, tipburn and brown rib is part of the package. Sow it in spring and keep sowing into early summer, thinning to roughly 10 to 12 inches, and cut heads as soon as they feel solid, since even this variety gives up eventually in real heat.
