Brutal sun is the requirement, not the risk
Lithops come from open ground in hard, bright country where the only shade is the pebble next door. In cultivation they need four to six hours of direct sun as a minimum and are happier with more. An unobstructed south-facing window in the northern hemisphere, or a north-facing one in the southern hemisphere, is the baseline. East-facing works if the sun is genuinely unblocked. A west window gives you afternoon heat but often only two or three usable hours in winter. Anything shaded, filtered by a net curtain, or set back a couple of feet from the glass is not enough, and the plant will show you within a month.
The failure from too little light is called etiolation and it is permanent. The body elongates upward, rising out of the grit on a pale neck, the flat top loses its markings and turns a washed-out green, and the whole thing eventually topples sideways. New leaves formed in the next cycle can be normal if you fix the light, but the stretched section never shrinks back. This is the reason lithops fail indoors far more often than they fail from cold or from pests.

Moving a plant into stronger sun without scorching it
The one time sun genuinely damages lithops is when it arrives suddenly. A plant that has spent winter behind glass at low light angles, or has just come from a shop, has thin skin and no protective pigment. Put it straight into unfiltered spring sun and you get a bleached white patch on the shoulder within two days, which then dries into a permanent scar. The plant survives; the mark stays for the life of that leaf pair.
Acclimatize over two to three weeks and the problem disappears entirely. The same applies to the first warm days of spring even if the plant has not moved, because the sun angle changes faster than the plant adapts. Shade cloth or a sheet of paper taped to the glass for the first fortnight of strong sun is enough.
- Start with morning sun only Give the plant two or three hours of early direct sun and shade for the rest of the day. Do this for about a week. Morning sun is weaker and cooler than the same duration in the afternoon, so it builds tolerance without heat stress.
- Extend by an hour every few days Add to the exposure gradually over the following two weeks until the plant is in sun for as long as the position offers. Check the shoulders each morning for any pale patch and pull back a step if you see one.
- Watch the color rather than the clock Adapting plants darken and the patterning becomes sharper and more contrasted. That color change is the plant making its own sunscreen, and once it has happened you can leave it in full exposure permanently.
Never acclimatize a plant during the leaf change if you can avoid it, and never combine a move into stronger sun with a watering. Do one thing at a time so that if something goes wrong you know which change caused it.
Heat, cold and air movement
Lithops tolerate heat that would cook most houseplants, but they stop growing in it. Above roughly 90F (32C) they go into a summer rest, and that is normal and requires nothing from you except withholding water. What they will not tolerate is heat combined with damp, so a hot windowsill with a pot that is still wet from last week is the classic route to a collapsed plant in midsummer.
At the other end, they are far tougher than their appearance suggests provided they are dry. Kept bone dry, an established plant shrugs off nights down to about 40F (4C) and brief dips near freezing do no harm. Wet and cold together is fatal. Aim to keep winter nights above 41F (5C) and treat any winter watering as out of the question anyway, which conveniently is what the leaf change demands.
Moving air matters more than most people expect. A closed terrarium or a glass cloche is the single worst container you can put a lithops in. Still humid air keeps the surface of the grit damp, encourages fungus gnats, and stops the skin drying after any splash. An open windowsill with a slightly open window nearby, or a small fan running in a grow tent, gives you the airflow that keeps rot away.
What changes between seasons
Unlike many succulents, lithops do not need a big seasonal move, but two small adjustments help. In high summer, if the plant is against glass that gets very hot, pull it back six to twelve inches (15 to 30 cm) or add light shading in the hottest part of the afternoon. The plant is resting and gains nothing from extra intensity, while the pot temperature can climb enough to cook the shallow roots.
In winter, do the opposite and give it every scrap of light available. This is when the new leaf pair is forming, and light quality during the leaf change decides how compact and well-marked the new bodies will be. If your window cannot supply four hours of direct sun in midwinter, a grow light run twelve to fourteen hours a day at four to eight inches (10 to 20 cm) above the plants will prevent the stretch that shows up every spring otherwise.
What to write down about position
Position is the variable people change without noticing and then cannot reconstruct. Note where each pot sits, which direction the window faces, and roughly how many hours of direct sun it actually receives, measured once by watching it rather than estimated. Record the date you moved anything and the date any scorch mark appeared, since the gap between those two tells you how fast you can move that plant next time.
If you grow several, write the position next to each plant rather than for the collection as a whole. Two pots eighteen inches (45 cm) apart on the same sill can differ by two hours of sun, and when one plant stretches and the other does not, that record is the only thing that tells you why.
