The bulbs are toxic, and that shapes the risks
Every part of spider lily contains alkaloids that make it poisonous to people and to pets, with the bulb by far the most concentrated. Eating any quantity causes vomiting, drooling, abdominal pain and, in larger doses, more serious effects. Contact with the sap can irritate skin, and it is worth wearing gloves whenever you handle cut stems or lift bulbs.
The practical danger is mistaken identity rather than the plant standing in a border. Dormant bulbs look very like onions or shallots, and a tray of them left in a shed or a bag brought indoors is exactly the situation that leads to accidents. Label anything you lift, store it away from edible crops, and never keep spider lily bulbs in the same place as onion sets or garlic.
The same chemistry is a genuine benefit outdoors. Deer, rabbits, voles, mice and squirrels avoid the plant completely, which makes it one of the few bulbs that can be planted with confidence in gardens where rodents destroy tulips and crocuses every year. Where it is planted along a boundary or in rough ground, it is effectively browsing-proof.
If a child or pet has chewed any part of the plant, contact a doctor or a vet promptly and say which plant was involved. Do not wait for symptoms to develop before making the call.
Summer rot is what actually kills established clumps
Basal rot during dormancy destroys more spider lilies than any pest or disease. It comes from ground that stays wet while the bulb is resting: heavy clay that holds water, a spot under a downspout, an irrigation zone, or a bed planted over with thirsty summer annuals and watered all season. The bulb softens at the rooting plate, the clump thins over two or three years, and the gaps never fill in.
There is no spray for this and no rescue for a bulb that has already gone soft. The fix is site management: turn irrigation away from the area, keep summer mulch thin, and if the ground itself is the problem, lift during dormancy and replant into a raised or sharply drained position. When you lift, squeeze each bulb and bin anything soft at the base rather than replanting it and hoping.
Mold on stored bulbs is a different matter, caused by keeping them too long, too warm, or sealed in plastic. Replanting the same day avoids it entirely.
Reading the symptoms
Insect trouble is rare. The occasional caterpillar grazes the winter foliage and slugs may mark an emerging flower stem in wet weather, but neither is worth treating. The failure that is not a failure
The most frequent report about this plant is a clump that produces perfect foliage every winter and no flowers in autumn, and the most frequent cause is that somebody moved it or dug near it within the last year or two. Spider lily takes disturbance badly and responds by skipping flowering while it re-establishes. The leaves carry on as normal throughout, which is exactly why the situation is misread as a disease.
The correct response is to do nothing at all. Digging the bulbs up to inspect them restarts the clock and guarantees another blank season. Leave the clump completely alone, keep the ground dry in summer, keep the winter leaves in full light, and it will begin flowering again on its own. Where the bulb was also buried too deep during the move, that must be corrected once during dormancy, and then the same waiting applies.
A useful rule with this plant is that fixing anything costs a season, so it is worth fixing the right thing once rather than intervening repeatedly. Two consecutive blank autumns after a move are within the normal range.
What to record when something goes wrong
Note the date of anything that disturbs a clump, including digging nearby, mulching over the crowns, and any planting done in the same bed. When flowering fails, that record almost always contains the answer, and it saves you from digging up healthy bulbs in search of a disease that is not there.
For rot, note the exact spot rather than the plant. Wet ground is a property of the site and it will do the same to the next thing you plant there. A short note about which corner of the bed stays saturated in summer is worth more than any record about the bulbs themselves, and it tells you where never to plant spider lily again.
