The root layer is the whole tree
A macadamia feeds through a dense mat of very fine roots in the top twelve to eighteen inches (30 to 45 cm) of soil, concentrated in the moist, airy layer just under the leaf litter. They are thin, brittle and constantly being replaced, and they are the reason this tree behaves so differently from an apple or a plum.
The practical rule is that nothing digs under the canopy. No forking over, no planting bulbs or annuals in the drip zone, no trenching for irrigation lines, no rotavating a strip of lawn nearby. A single pass with a spade through that root mat sets a young tree back a season and can push an older one into a slow decline that takes two years to show.
Weeds under the canopy get pulled by hand while small or, better, smothered. Do not hoe. If grass has already colonised the root zone, cut it short and sheet mulch over the top rather than lifting the turf.
Mulch is not decoration for this tree, it is a substitute for the forest litter the roots evolved under. Keep a coarse organic mulch two to three inches (5 to 8 cm) deep across the whole root zone all year, topped up annually, and keep it four inches (10 cm) clear of the trunk.
Watering: even, deep, and never waterlogged
Macadamias want steady moisture rather than a cycle of drought and flood. The two stages that matter most are flowering and the weeks when the nuts are filling: dry soil during either one causes flowers to abort and small nuts to drop, and no amount of watering afterwards brings them back.
Water deeply and infrequently rather than lightly and often. A good soak wets the soil to a foot (30 cm) down; test by pushing a finger or a screwdriver into the ground under the mulch a day later. If it goes in easily and comes out damp, the tree is fine.
Waterlogging is the faster killer. Soil that stays saturated for more than a day or two suffocates those fine roots and opens the door to root rot. If water pools under the canopy after rain, the answer is to raise and improve the site, not to water less.

Feeding: little, often, and low in phosphorus
Macadamias evolved on poor, weathered soils and they are easily overfed. Heavy nitrogen produces a big soft tree that flowers poorly and breaks in wind, and high phosphorus fertilizer does nothing useful here: the cluster roots of this family are built to scavenge phosphorus from soil that has very little of it.
Split the year's feed into three or four small applications spread from the start of growth through the nut filling period, and stop feeding well before the cool season so the tree is not pushing soft growth into cold weather. Broadcast the fertilizer over the mulch out to the canopy edge and water it in. Never dig it in.
The two deficiencies that actually show up in home-grown macadamias are boron and zinc. Boron shortage causes hollow or misshapen kernels and poor nut set; zinc shortage gives small, narrow, bunched leaves at the shoot tips. Both are corrected with a foliar spray applied around flowering, and both are easy to overdo, so follow the label rate exactly.
Yellowing between the veins on young leaves usually means the soil is too alkaline for the tree to take up iron, not that it needs more fertilizer. Correct it with a chelated iron drench and, over time, with acidic mulches such as pine needles or composted bark.
Wind, cold and the shape of the tree
Macadamia timber is dense but brittle, and a limb carrying a full crop snaps in a squall. The cheapest insurance is a windbreak on the exposed side and a habit of removing any narrow, tight-angled fork while it is still small enough to cut with pruners.
Cold is the other limit. Leaves scorch at around 28F (minus 2C) and flowers and small nuts are lost outright. A young tree can be wrapped in row cover for a cold night; an older one cannot, so the protection has to be the site you chose for it. If a freeze does hit, wait until growth resumes before cutting anything, because damage looks far worse in the first weeks than it turns out to be.
Growing one in a container
A macadamia will live for years in a large pot, at least twenty-four inches (60 cm) across, in a free-draining acidic mix. Expect a tree of eight to ten feet (2.5 to 3 m) and a modest handful of nuts rather than a real crop. The advantage is that it can be moved under cover for a cold snap.
Repot as rarely as possible and never bare-root it. Move up one pot size every three or four years, sliding the root ball across intact, and refresh the top two inches (5 cm) of mix in the years between. Container trees dry out fast and need checking every few days in hot weather.
What to write down this year
Keep a note of when flowering starts and finishes, when you fed the tree and with what, and the dates of any cold night below 32F (0C). Macadamia crops swing from year to year, and those three lines usually explain a poor season better than anything you can see on the tree.
Also record the date you last topped up the mulch and any spell where the ground under the canopy stayed wet for more than two days. Root problems show up months after the cause, and a dated note is the only way to connect them.
