Brown flowers: frost, almost always
Flowers that turn brown and limp within a day or two of opening have been frosted. There is no fungus involved and no treatment. The tell is that the damage appears all at once across the whole tree, and worst on the side that catches the earliest sun, because rapid thawing is what actually ruptures the petals.
If flowers brown gradually, a few at a time, over a week of wet weather, that is a different problem: petal blight, a gray fuzzy rot that starts as small water-soaked spots and spreads on the fallen petals below. Rake up and remove fallen petals if you see it, improve air movement, and accept that in a very wet spring it will recur.
Wind burn gives a third pattern: torn, ragged petals with brown edges rather than a wholesale collapse, concentrated on the exposed side of the tree. It confirms that the site is too open, which is a planting problem rather than a pest problem.

Scale insects and the sooty mold that follows
Scale is the most persistent genuine pest on magnolias. The adults look like small brown or waxy bumps clamped to the undersides of branches and along the stems, and they are easy to mistake for bark texture. They feed on sap and excrete honeydew, so the first thing most people notice is sticky leaves, a shine on whatever is parked underneath, and then a black sooty mold growing on the sugar.
A light infestation does no real harm and can be left. A heavy one weakens the tree, thins the canopy and reduces flowering. Rub off what you can reach with a cloth, and target the mobile crawler stage rather than the armoured adults, which is when treatment actually works. On a large tree, encouraging predators and tolerating a low population is more realistic than eradication.
The sooty mold itself is harmless to the tree beyond blocking light on the leaves. It disappears once the honeydew supply stops, so treat the insects and ignore the mold.
Dieback, coral spot and wounds that will not close
Twigs and small branches that die back from the tip, often with small coral-pink pustules appearing on the dead wood, are a familiar sight on magnolias. The fungus behind those pustules mostly colonises wood that was already dead or dying, and the interesting question is why the wood died in the first place.
In practice the answer is usually one of three things: a pruning cut made at the wrong time of year that did not heal, drought stress in a previous summer, or root damage from digging under the canopy. Magnolias seal wounds slowly, and a wound that stays open through a winter is an entry point. This is the practical reason behind the rule that pruning is done sparingly and only in midsummer.
Cut dead wood out cleanly back to healthy tissue, in midsummer, and take the prunings away rather than leaving them lying under the tree. Clean the blade between cuts. Then look for the underlying cause, because cutting out the symptom without changing what caused it just means doing it again next year.
If dieback appears across the whole crown at once rather than on scattered twigs, suspect a waterlogged root zone or serious root damage, and check for anything that was dug, trenched or paved near the tree in the last two years.
Yellow leaves and what they mean
Yellowing between the veins while the veins themselves stay green is the classic sign that the soil is too alkaline for the tree to take up iron. It is a site issue, not a disease. On mildly alkaline ground, an acidic mulch and chelated iron will keep the tree looking respectable. On thin chalk the problem is structural and the tree will never thrive.
Uniform pale leaves, with early leaf drop in midsummer, point to water stress or a damaged root plate instead. Check the mulch depth, soak the root zone thoroughly, and think hard about what has been done to the ground under the canopy recently. Magnolia roots are shallow and brittle enough that a single afternoon of border replanting can cause a whole season of poor foliage.
Scattered yellow leaves dropping in late summer while the rest of the canopy stays green is normal. Magnolias shed a proportion of older leaves every year and it needs no action.
Keeping a problem log
Record the date you first see any symptom, which side of the tree it is on, and the weather in the ten days before. Frost damage, wind burn and petal blight all produce brown flowers, and by the time you are looking at the tree the differences are subtle. The weather record separates them reliably.
For scale, note where on the tree you found it and roughly how many. Populations rise and fall over several years, and a note from two seasons ago is the only way to tell whether the current infestation is getting worse or is simply the same one you already decided to tolerate.
