What actually goes wrong
One of the reasons to grow this instead of true spinach in summer is that it has remarkably few problems. It is not troubled by the leaf miners, downy mildew and aphid pressure that make real spinach hard work in warm weather. What does affect it is a short list, and each item has a clear cause you can act on.
The pattern is worth learning because it changes what you look at. Trouble here starts at the bottom of the vine and in the soil, not at the growing tip. A weekly look at the lowest eighteen inches (45 cm) of stem, and at the underside of the leaves there, catches almost everything early.
Cold is the other one, and it is not a disease. This is a tropical plant with no frost tolerance at all, and it takes damage well above freezing. Distinguishing chill damage from disease saves you spraying something that a change in the weather caused.

Leaf spot in a crowded vine
This is the common one, and it is a management problem rather than bad luck. A vine grown in humid heat with dense foliage and overhead watering holds moisture on its leaves all night, and fungal spots follow. They begin as small brown flecks on the oldest, shadiest leaves, enlarge into round spots with paler centers, and in a bad case run together until the lower half of the vine defoliates.
It rarely kills the plant. What it does is cost you the lower harvest and leave spores in the bed for next year. The response is airflow, water discipline and removing infected material, in that order. Spraying a dense wet vine achieves very little if the conditions that caused it are unchanged.
- Strip the lowest leaves Take off the leaves in the bottom foot (30 cm) of stem as the vine climbs. They are shaded, unproductive, closest to the soil splash and the first to be infected. Removing them opens the base to air.
- Water the soil only Switch to watering at ground level and do it in the morning. Overhead watering in the evening leaves the canopy wet for twelve hours, which is exactly what the fungus needs.
- Thin the canopy If the vine is a solid wall of leaf, take out whole shoots to let light and air through rather than picking odd leaves. You want to be able to see daylight through the middle of the plant.
- Bin the infected leaves Take spotted leaves out of the garden. Do not compost them and do not drop them at the base of the plant, which puts the spores right where rain will splash them back up.
Mulching bare soil under the vine cuts leaf spot noticeably, because most of the infection arrives as soil splashed up by rain and watering.
Nematodes and soil problems
Root knot nematodes are the one problem that genuinely ends a crop. A vine that is stunted from the start, wilts every hot afternoon and does not recover overnight even in damp soil is the picture. Confirm it by lifting a plant at the end of the season: infested roots carry hard swollen galls along them, not the smooth fibrous root you want. Once you have seen those, you know why the plant never grew.
There is no cure for the affected plant. The response is rotation and soil management. Do not plant this crop, or tomatoes, peppers, okra or cucurbits, in that ground next season. Adding plenty of organic matter helps considerably by supporting the soil life that keeps nematode numbers down, and growing in large containers with fresh compost sidesteps the problem entirely.
Stem rot at soil level is the other soil-borne issue, and it is usually self-inflicted. It happens where mulch is heaped against the stem or where a shoot has been left lying on wet ground. Pull the mulch back an inch or two (3 to 5 cm) from the base of the stem and keep shoots up on the support.

Cold damage, and knowing when to stop
This vine has no frost hardiness whatsoever, and it does not need a frost to be damaged. Nights in the low 40s F (around 5C) already slow it to a halt and mark the leaves, and the first real frost turns the whole plant to black mush overnight. There is no protection worth attempting for a plant this size and this tender.
Recognize the end and use it. When night temperatures start dropping into the 40s F, growth stops, the leaves toughen and the vine begins flowering and setting berries in earnest. That is the point to take a final large harvest rather than waiting for a better week that is not coming.
Then deal with the seed. This plant self-seeds heavily, and a vine left to collapse in place drops hundreds of berries into the soil, giving you a bed of volunteers next summer in whatever you plant there. Clear the vine and rake up the fallen berries before you turn the bed over. Volunteers that do come up pull easily when small, so a walk over the bed in early summer settles it.
- Take a final harvest at the first cold nights When nights are heading for the low 40s F (around 5C), strip everything usable in one go. The leaves are still good; waiting a week to get more will cost you the lot to the first frost.
- Clear the vine and the berries Cut the vine down and take it off the bed along with any berries on the soil surface. Do not compost berry-laden material in a heap you will spread on the garden, or you have simply moved the seed somewhere else.
- Keep a note of what went wrong and where Record which plant showed leaf spot first, the date you saw it, and whether the roots were galled when you pulled them. That note is what tells you next spring whether to move the bed or just change how you water.
If you want the plant year-round in a cold climate, take cuttings in late summer and root them in water. A rooted tip in a pot on a bright warm windowsill carries the plant through winter far more reliably than digging up the parent.
