What a medium tomato is asking of you
A medium tomato sits between the cherry and the beefsteak, with fruit somewhere around four to six ounces (110 to 170 g) and typically four to six of them on a truss rather than the twenty or thirty a cherry carries. That one difference drives everything else in this guide. Each fruit takes 55 to 65 days from open flower to full color, against roughly 40 for a cherry, so the plant is holding heavier fruit for longer and pulling water and calcium into it the entire time.
The practical consequence is that a medium tomato is far less forgiving of a poor start than a cherry is. A cherry set into thin soil will still fruit heavily because each individual fruit is cheap for the plant to finish. A medium tomato in the same ground gives you fruit that stalls at half size, goes black at the base, or splits on the shoulders the first time it rains. Everything you do in the first fortnight is really about building a root system big enough to carry that load.
Do not judge a medium tomato by its first truss. The lowest truss on this size of fruit is often uneven, with one oversized fruit and two small ones. The second and third trusses are the honest measure of how the plant is doing.
Pick a short, thick transplant with no open flowers
Look for a plant under ten inches (25 cm) with six to eight true leaves and a stem you cannot dent with a fingernail. The distance between leaf joints should be short, around an inch and a half (four cm). Long gaps mean the plant was raised warm, dim and crowded, and that soft growth snaps in the first gusty week outdoors just as it is trying to root.
Unlike a cherry, you actively do not want a medium tomato transplant that has already opened flowers or set fruit in its nursery pot. A fruit that begins sizing up in a four inch (10 cm) pot hormonally tells the plant to stop extending roots, and a medium fruit takes two months to finish, so the plant spends that entire window handicapped. Pinch off the whole truss before you plant. You lose one early tomato and gain roughly a month of root growth.
- Roll the stem between your fingers It should feel round, firm and slightly bristly. A stem that flattens or feels hollow is soft nursery growth that will check badly at planting.
- Turn the pot over and look at the roots White root tips visible at the drainage holes is right. A dense tan mat plugging the base means the plant has been pot-bound for weeks and will need its outer roots teased loose.
- Remove any flower truss before planting Snap the whole truss off at its base. On a medium tomato this costs you one fruit and buys the root system four to six weeks of uninterrupted growth.
- Reject anything with spotted lower leaves Brown spots with pale halos on the bottom leaves are leaf spot arriving with the plant. Do not carry that into a bed you intend to grow tomatoes in for years.
Soil temperature, not the calendar
Tomato roots barely move below 60F (15C), and a medium tomato punished by cold ground early rarely catches up, because its fruit cycle is long enough that a lost fortnight in spring is a lost truss in autumn. Wait until the last frost has passed and the soil four inches (10 cm) down holds above 60F (15C) through the morning, not just in the afternoon sun.
There is a second reason to be patient that applies specifically to this size of fruit. Cold, wet soil early in the season damages the fine root hairs that move calcium, and calcium delivery is exactly what fails when blossom end rot shows up on the first two trusses. Plants set into cold ground are noticeably more likely to give you black-bottomed fruit six weeks later, even after the weather has turned.

Trench planting, and why it matters more here
Tomato stems root along their entire buried length. Lay the plant into a sloping trench four to five inches (10 to 12 cm) deep, strip every leaf that will end up below ground, and bury the stem right up to the lowest remaining pair of leaves. On a ten inch (25 cm) transplant you can comfortably bury six inches (15 cm) of stem, and by midsummer that plant has several times the root volume of one dropped straight into a hole.
For a medium tomato this is not a nicety. A truss of five fruit at four ounces each is well over a pound (500 g) of water-hungry tissue on a single stalk, and the plant has to keep that supplied through hot afternoons for two months. Shallow-rooted plants of this size are the ones that wilt at noon, recover at dusk, and hand you fruit that splits around the shoulders every time the weather changes.
- Strip the lower leaves cleanly Pinch them off flush at the stem rather than tearing them. Any leaf left underground rots, and rot at the base of a young stem can take the whole plant in wet soil.
- Dig a trench, not a deep hole Keep the buried stem in the top four to five inches (10 to 12 cm) where the soil is warm. A vertical hole puts it into cold ground where it rots instead of rooting.
- Bend the tip gently upright Lay the stem along the trench and curve the top up before backfilling. It straightens itself within about three days as it grows towards the light.
- Soak once, then leave it alone Half a gallon (two liters) poured slowly at the base settles the soil around the stem. Then wait until the top two inches (five cm) are dry before watering again.
Spacing and container size for fruit this size
Grow a medium tomato on a single stem and 20 inches (50 cm) between plants is enough. On two stems, allow 28 to 30 inches (70 to 75 cm). The spacing question is really an airflow question: a medium fruit sits in the canopy for two months before it is ready, which is twice as long as a cherry fruit spends exposed to whatever fungal spores are moving through a damp row.
In containers, treat five gallons (20 liters) of compost as the absolute floor and eight to ten gallons (30 to 40 liters) as the sensible target. A medium tomato in a small pot is the single most reliable way to produce blossom end rot, because the compost swings from soaked to bone dry within a day and calcium only moves in a steady stream of water. Use a soil-based compost rather than a pure peat or coir mix, since it holds moisture more evenly and does not shrink away from the pot sides.

Write down what you planted and where
Note the planting date, the soil temperature if you measured it, and a rough sketch of where each plant sits in the bed. Because a medium tomato takes around 60 days from flower to ripe fruit, the gap between a decision and its consequence is long enough that you will genuinely not remember by the end of the season whether the plant at the end of the row went in early or late.
The position sketch earns its keep over several seasons. Soil-borne wilts sit in one patch of ground and take out whichever plant is standing there, year after year. Three seasons of dated sketches is the only thing that will tell you that the corner nearest the fence has killed a plant every single year, which is the kind of fact no general guide can give you.
