Melon Problems: Powdery Mildew, Wilt, Aphids and Fruit That Rots on the Ground

Most melon trouble is mildew on the leaves and rot underneath the fruit. Both are prevented by spacing, mulch and dry foliage, not by spraying.

Powdery mildew is the one you will get

Powdery mildew is close to inevitable on melons in the second half of the season, and how much it costs you depends entirely on how late it arrives. It shows as small circles of white dust on the upper surface of the older leaves, spreads until leaves are wholly white, and then those leaves brown and die. Every leaf lost is sugar the ripening fruit does not get, so mildew that arrives after fruit are filling ruins the flavor of a crop that otherwise looked fine.

Unlike most fungal problems it does not need wet leaves; it thrives in warm days, cool nights and humid still air, which is exactly the condition inside a crowded melon canopy. That is why spacing and laying the runners out in a single layer do more against mildew than anything you can spray. Once it is established, treatment slows it at best, so the work is all in delaying its arrival.

Remove the first few affected leaves and bag them off the plot rather than dropping them on the bed. Left on the ground they keep sporulating and become the source for the rest of the planting.

Plants that collapse suddenly

A melon plant that looks perfect one evening and is flat the next afternoon, with half grown fruit on it, has a wilt in its water-conducting tissue and cannot be saved. Pull it, take it off the plot and do not compost it. It is worth cutting the stem near the base to see which wilt you have, because the prevention differs: fusarium shows brown staining in the ring just under the skin and lives in the soil for years, while bacterial wilt is carried by cucumber beetles and strings a fine sticky thread between the cut faces when you press them together and pull apart.

Before concluding it is a wilt, check the obvious. Melon leaves flag in midday heat even in moist soil and stand up again by evening, which is normal and means nothing. A plant that is still down at first light after being watered has a real problem. And a stem brown and soft right at the soil line is collar rot from planting too deep or from water pooling round the crown, which is a drainage and planting-depth issue rather than a disease to spray.

  1. Check at dawn before you panic Midday wilting that recovers overnight is normal. Only a plant still collapsed at first light after watering is genuinely in trouble.
  2. Cut a stem and look inside Brown staining in the ring under the skin means fusarium. A sticky thread between the cut faces means bacterial wilt. The two need different prevention.
  3. Pull and remove affected plants There is no treatment for either wilt. Leaving the plant in place spreads inoculum and, in the case of bacterial wilt, feeds the beetles carrying it.
  4. Keep a three year rotation Do not grow melons, cucumbers, squash or watermelon in the same bed for at least three years. Fusarium in particular makes this rule expensive to break.

Insects: what actually does damage

The first three weeks after planting out is when insect damage does lasting harm. A young melon losing half its leaf area to cucumber beetles never really recovers, and those beetles carry bacterial wilt as well as chewing the plant, so keeping them off small plants is worth real effort. A floating row cover over the plants for that first period deals with beetles, aphids and wind at once.

The cover has to come off the day the first flowers open, without exception. A covered plant in flower gets no insect visits, sets nothing, and whole crops are lost every year to a row cover left on out of caution. After that, rely on inspection twice a week, and remember that any insecticide sprayed on open flowers costs you pollination for days afterwards; if something must be sprayed, do it in the evening once the flowers have closed.

Take any row cover off the moment flowering starts. Insect pollination is what makes the crop, and a covered melon in flower will set nothing at all.

Fruit problems that are not diseases

A good deal of what goes wrong with melon fruit is caused by water and pollination rather than by any organism. A fruit that splits open on the vine has almost always taken up water too fast after a dry spell, usually the first heavy rain after a fortnight without any. A fruit that reaches full size and tastes of nothing was watered right up to harvest, or was carried on a plant holding too many fruit. And a fruit that is pinched and narrow on one side was only partly pollinated and was never going to fill evenly.

The one that looks most like a disease is the pale, soft, rotting patch on the underside of a fruit resting on damp soil. It is not a plant disease so much as a placement problem, and it is entirely prevented by sliding a tile, board or thick straw pad under each fruit once it reaches fist size. In a wet climate, propping a sheet of clear plastic over the ripening fruit for the last fortnight prevents both the splitting and the rot at once.

The inspection routine and the record that pays off

Everything that matters on a melon happens where you do not look by accident: the undersides of leaves, the base of the stem, and the underside of the fruit. Twice a week, turn some leaves over, check the collar of each plant for borer holes and browning, and lift the edge of any fruit sitting on the ground. On a small planting the round takes a few minutes and it catches almost everything early enough to act.

Keep notes that are dated and positional, because that is what makes them useful a year later. Record the day you first saw mildew and on which plant, the day you first saw beetles, and which end of the bed lost plants to wilt. Wilt and rot cluster in the same wet or sheltered spots season after season, and a rough map of which positions failed is worth more than a general memory that the plants got sick. The preventative work next year starts two weeks before the dates you wrote down.

  1. Turn leaves over twice a week Mites, aphids and downy mildew all begin underneath. Looking only from above finds them a fortnight later than you could have.
  2. Check the stem base every visit The collar and the first foot of each shoot is where a plant is actually lost, to borers and to collar rot, and it is the part nobody looks at.
  3. Record first-sighting dates Note the day each symptom first appeared and on which plant. Two weeks before that date next season is when prevention should begin.
  4. Clear the bed completely at the end Take every scrap of vine, leaf and unpicked fruit off the plot, and never compost a plant lost to wilt. Cucurbit diseases overwinter in bed debris more reliably than anywhere else.
