Two flowers, one job
Every plant in this family is monoecious: it carries male and female flowers separately on the same vine. The male flower sits on a plain thin stalk. The female flower sits on top of a tiny replica of the fruit to come, a miniature melon, cucumber or gourd right behind the petals, and that swelling is the only identification you need. Look behind the flower, not at it.
Pollen must physically move from the male anther to the female stigma, and the plant cannot do it alone. Wind carries almost none of it, because cucurbit pollen is heavy and sticky by design. In practice that means an insect, usually a bee, or your own hand. A female flower that opens and closes without a visit shrivels at the base within three days and drops, which is exactly what gardeners are seeing when they report fruit rotting at the tip while still tiny.

The wave of male flowers with no females at all, early in the season, alarms a lot of first-time growers. It is completely normal. The plant is calling in pollinators and building a lateral framework before it commits to fruit.
The morning window
Cucurbit flowers are open for a matter of hours, not days. They unfold around dawn and are effectively finished by mid-morning on a warm day, and pollen viability falls away sharply once temperatures pass about 90F (32C). This single fact explains most pollination failures. If your bees arrive at midday, or if you attempt hand pollination in the afternoon, you are working on flowers that have already closed shop.
Heat is the other common culprit. Sustained days above 95F (35C) with warm nights sterilize pollen and cause the plant to abort female flowers outright, and a run of cool, wet, dull weather suppresses bee flight so completely that no flower gets visited at all. Both look identical from the outside, a vine full of flowers and no fruit, and both are fixed by hand pollination during whatever short good window the day allows.
Hand pollination, step by step
Hand pollination is quick, reliable and worth doing routinely for melons and hard-shell gourds even when bees are about, because it lets you control which day a fruit sets and therefore when it will ripen. It takes about thirty seconds a flower once you have the knack, and the strike rate is usually higher than what the insects manage.
One male flower carries enough pollen for two or three females. Work in the first two or three hours after the flowers open, choose males from the same plant or a neighboring one of the same type, and be gentle: the stigma bruises, and a bruised stigma sets a misshapen fruit.
- Pick a freshly opened male Snap it off at the stalk. The pollen should be visibly dusty and come away on a fingertip. A flower that opened yesterday and reclosed is spent, and the pollen will be dull and clumped.
- Strip the petals Pull the petals back or off entirely so you are left with a pollen-loaded brush on a handle. This is easier and more thorough than working with a paintbrush, and it deposits far more pollen.
- Dab all round the stigma Roll the anther gently over every lobe of the female stigma. Missing a lobe gives you a lopsided fruit, because each section of the fruit fills from the seeds set beneath that part of the stigma.
- Mark the flower and the date A twist of colored wool on the stem, plus the date on a label pushed in beside the plant. Day counts from pollination are how you judge ripeness later, especially in melons.
- Repeat on the next two or three females Use the same male until the anther stops leaving visible dust on your finger. Then take a fresh one rather than pressing harder on a spent flower.
Nightly-blooming hard-shell gourds are the family oddity. Their white flowers open in the evening and are worked by moths, so hand pollination for those is done at dusk rather than at dawn. Everything else in this list is a morning job.
Getting the bees to do it for you
Where you can attract enough pollinators, they will always outwork you. Cucurbits are visited by honeybees and bumblebees, and in some regions by specialist squash bees that arrive at first light before anything else is flying. Feed all of them by keeping something else in flower nearby through the whole season, ideally a mix of low umbellifers and a long-flowering annual within a few yards of the bed.
The most common own goal is spraying. Any insecticide applied to open flowers, including the ones sold as organic, kills or repels the pollinators you depend on. If a spray is genuinely necessary for beetles or mildew, apply it in the evening after the flowers have shut, and keep it off the blossoms entirely. A cucurbit bed with no bees produces nothing regardless of how clean the leaves are.
Cross-pollination and saving seed
Two questions come up constantly and have opposite answers. Will a squash growing beside a melon change the taste of this year's fruit? No. Cross-pollination affects only the seed inside the fruit, not the flesh around it, so this season's crop tastes exactly as its own type should whatever grew next to it.
Will seed saved from that fruit come true? Often not. Species within this family cross freely with their own kind, so the seed can produce something wildly unlike either parent. If you intend to save seed, either grow a single type of each species, or hand-pollinate deliberately and tape the female flower shut before and after the transfer so no insect can add anything. Keep a note of which fruit was isolated, because by autumn every seed jar looks alike.
