Recognizing the damage
Citrus leafminer announces itself with a silvery, snaking trail winding across a young leaf, as if someone had drawn on it with a fine wet brush. The trail is a tunnel: a tiny larva is feeding between the upper and lower surfaces of the leaf, and the silver appearance comes from the air-filled space it leaves behind. Look closely and you can usually see a thin dark line of frass running down the center of the tunnel.
The leaf responds by curling and twisting, often folding along the length of the mine, and badly hit leaves end up crumpled and distorted. Because the moth only lays on soft new growth, the damage appears exclusively on the current flush, and always on the newest leaves near the shoot tips. Older, hardened leaves are never affected.
That last point is the most useful diagnostic. If you are seeing tunnels and curling on mature dark leaves further back on the branch, you are not looking at leafminer and should look for mites, aphids or a nutrient issue instead. Leafminer damage on already-hardened leaves does not appear; what you see there is old damage on leaves that were young when they were hit.

Why a mature tree can tolerate it
The damage looks far worse than it is. Studies and long experience both point the same way: on an established citrus tree, even heavy leafminer infestation of the late-season flush has little measurable effect on fruit yield or fruit quality. The tree has plenty of mature leaves doing the photosynthetic work, and the mined leaves, though ugly, still function partially and stay on the tree.
Where it genuinely matters is on young trees in their first two or three years. Those trees have little leaf area to spare, and repeated destruction of each new flush slows down the framework growth you are trying to build. A newly planted satsuma losing every flush to leafminer is worth protecting; a ten-year-old tree with mined leaves on the autumn flush is not worth spraying.
There is one indirect risk. Leafminer tunnels break the leaf surface and can give bacterial diseases an entry point where those diseases are present in the region. Where that is a known local problem, the management advice is stricter and worth following from local sources; in most home gardens it is not the deciding factor.
The other reason for restraint is that broad-spectrum insecticides make the problem worse. The larva is inside the leaf, protected from contact sprays, so the spray largely misses it while killing the parasitic wasps that attack it. Those wasps often kill a large share of the population on their own, and gardens that spray repeatedly for leafminer typically end up with more leafminer, plus a scale and mite problem they did not have before.
Managing it by timing the flush
Because the moth can only lay on soft new growth, the whole strategy is about controlling when your tree produces that growth and how long it stays soft. Leafminer populations build through the season and peak on late summer and autumn flushes, while the spring flush usually escapes with light damage because populations are still low.
The practical consequence is to feed for a strong early flush and avoid pushing a late one. Heavy nitrogen late in the season produces exactly the soft young growth that arrives when moth numbers are at their highest, and it also produces growth that will not harden before cold weather. Stop the nitrogen well before the end of the growing season and let the tree settle.
The same logic applies to pruning. Cutting in late summer triggers a flush of new shoots straight into peak leafminer season. Keep pruning to the late winter window, where the resulting flush comes out ahead of the population build-up.
Do not remove mined leaves. It is tempting, and it is counterproductive on two counts: the leaf still contributes to the tree, and the parasitic wasps that control leafminer develop inside those mines. Stripping the damaged leaves removes the tree's leaf area and the natural control at the same time.
- Confirm what you have Check that the silver tunnels are only on soft new growth, and that there is no honeydew or sooty mold. Aphids on new growth are far more common and need a different, and much simpler, response.
- Assess the tree's age, not the leaf damage On a tree three years old or more, note the damage and take no action. On a first- or second-year tree losing whole flushes, treatment is worth considering because framework growth is at stake.
- Shift feeding earlier in the season Concentrate nitrogen on the early part of the growing season so the main flush comes and hardens before moth numbers peak. Stop feeding early enough that no soft growth is being pushed into late season.
- Move pruning to late winter Avoid summer shaping cuts that trigger an out-of-season flush. If you must remove a broken branch in summer, expect the regrowth around the cut to be mined and accept it.
- Rub off water shoots as they appear Vigorous vertical shoots produce large volumes of soft leaf and act as a nursery for the population. They need removing for pruning reasons anyway, so take them off while they are small and green.
- If treating a young tree, choose the narrow option For young trees only, a horticultural oil applied to the flush as it emerges deters egg laying and needs repeating as new leaves expand. It is a deterrent, not a cure, and it spares the parasitic wasps that do most of the real work.
Do not apply horticultural oil in hot weather or to a tree under drought stress; it scorches the leaves. Water the tree thoroughly the day before, and treat early in the morning or in the evening when temperatures are moderate.
What to write down
Note the date you first see fresh mines each year and how badly each flush is hit. Leafminer arrival is seasonally consistent within a garden, and after two seasons you will know whether your spring flush reliably escapes and which flush takes the damage. That is the information that lets you time feeding so the growth you care about comes out ahead of the pressure.
It is also worth noting whether the damage stayed on the tree's own new growth or whether whole young trees were set back. That distinction, recorded honestly rather than remembered, is what stops you spraying a mature tree every year for a problem that was never costing you fruit.
