The first two years, then hands off
A newly planted mimosa needs help only until its roots are out into the surrounding soil, which takes about two growing seasons. During that time water it deeply once a week in dry weather, delivering five gallons (20 liters) slowly at the base rather than sprinkling the leaves daily. Deep infrequent watering pulls roots downward and outward; frequent shallow watering keeps them in the top two inches (5 cm), which is precisely the wrong result for a plant already prone to blowing over.
After that, stop. Established plants are genuinely drought tolerant and grow better dry than wet. A plant that is irrigated through summer keeps making new extension growth into autumn, and that late soft growth neither ripens properly nor sets flower buds, and is the first thing killed by frost. The commonest way to spoil a healthy mimosa is to keep looking after it.
Mulch is worth applying for the first couple of years to keep weeds off and moisture in, but keep it as a two-inch (5 cm) layer of bark or gravel pulled back clear of the stem. Piled against the trunk it holds damp against the bark and rots it, and on a grafted plant it can bury the union and let the scion root over the top.
Feeding: usually the answer is none
Mimosa fixes nitrogen from the air in root nodules, in the way that peas and beans do. It arrives at your garden already fed. Adding nitrogen produces long soft shoots, huge leaves, weak wood and no flowers, and it is one of the most common reasons a vigorous-looking plant refuses to bloom. Keep lawn feed away from the root zone, which extends well beyond the branch spread.
If a plant on genuinely thin, poor ground is pale and stalled, apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer with a high potassium content once in spring. Potassium supports flowering and wood ripening rather than extension growth. That is the only feeding a mimosa in the ground needs, and most plants never need even that.
Yellowing between the veins on otherwise green leaves is not hunger. It is almost always alkaline soil locking up iron, and this species dislikes chalk and limestone. Chelated iron applied to the soil in spring will green the plant up temporarily, but on a genuinely alkaline site it is a treatment you will be repeating forever, and the plant is in the wrong place.

Suckers and spread
Mimosa suckers freely from shallow roots, and it does it more aggressively the more the roots are disturbed. Every spade cut through a surface root is an invitation for a new stem to appear a few feet away. Digging a border near the plant, edging a lawn, or trenching for a cable will all produce a crop of shoots you did not plant, sometimes twenty feet (6 m) from the trunk.
Deal with suckers by pulling, not cutting, wherever the shoot is young and soft enough. Tear it away from the root with a sharp downward pull so the dormant buds at its base come with it. A sucker cut off at ground level with pruners regrows two or three shoots from the same point, so cutting is genuinely worse than pulling. Do this whenever you see them, several times a season.
On a grafted plant this matters even more, because suckers from below the union are rootstock and will produce a different, usually less attractive plant if allowed to take over. Learn what your rootstock's foliage looks like compared with the top; the difference is usually obvious once you have seen it side by side.
This species has escaped cultivation and become invasive in several mediterranean-climate regions, spreading by both root suckers and seed. Check local guidance before planting, and remove seed pods after flowering wherever you can reach them.
Living with a brittle plant
The wood is light and snaps rather than bends, and the root plate is broad but shallow. Together those mean that an unpruned mature mimosa in an exposed position will eventually come down, usually in a winter storm, and usually roots and all rather than at a break. This is not a defect you can fix by staking; it is a characteristic of the species that you manage by keeping the crown small.
The practical answer is an annual hard reduction, taking a third to a half off the previous season's growth in the weeks straight after flowering, holding the plant at eight to twelve feet (2.4-3.7 m). A plant kept at that size flowers as heavily as a tall one, presents far less sail area to the wind, and can be dealt with entirely from the ground. Wall training does the same job by borrowing the building's shelter.
After any storm, walk round the plant and look at the base as well as the branches. A crack in the soil on the leeward side of the trunk, or soil lifted slightly on the windward side, means the root plate has moved and the plant is no longer securely anchored. That plant needs its crown cut back hard at the next available window, or removing.
- Check the base after every gale Look for cracked or lifted soil around the trunk and any new lean. Movement at the base is far more serious than a broken branch and means the anchorage has failed.
- Remove broken wood immediately Torn and hanging branches come off regardless of season. Cut back to a healthy junction just outside the branch collar rather than leaving a stub.
- Pull suckers on every pass Tear young suckers away from the root rather than cutting them. Cutting multiplies them. Include any shoot from below a graft union.
- Keep the root zone undisturbed Do not dig, cultivate or trench within the branch spread. Root damage both destabilises the plant and triggers a flush of suckers well away from the trunk.
What to record
Measure the height and spread once a year at the same point in the season and write it down alongside how hard you pruned. Growth rate is the clearest single health signal this plant gives you, and a year where extension halves is worth investigating long before any leaf symptom shows.
Log the date and severity of every storm that moved the plant, and photograph the base afterwards. Comparing those photographs season by season shows root plate movement that is invisible when you look at it fresh each time, and it is the evidence that tells you when a plant has become genuinely unsafe.
Finally, keep a simple note of where suckers appear and when. Over two or three seasons the pattern maps out where the surface roots actually run, which tells you where not to dig and how far this plant is really reaching into the rest of the garden.
