Sap suckers in the canopy
Aphids, whitefly and thrips are the pests you will actually meet. Aphids cluster on shoot tips and flower stalks, check growth and coat the leaves in sticky honeydew that goes black with sooty mold. A hard jet of plain water in the morning knocks them off and most do not climb back; repeat every two or three days while numbers are low. Ladybird and hoverfly larvae clear a colony in about a week if you leave them alone, and a broad-spectrum spray kills those predators faster than it kills the aphids.
Whitefly matters more than the direct damage suggests, because it transmits the yellow mosaic viruses that are the most serious disease of this crop in warm climates. The symptom is bright yellow mottling and blotching spreading across the leaves, followed by stunted plants and distorted, poorly filled pods. There is no treatment. Pull affected plants and remove them from the garden, keep whitefly numbers down with yellow sticky traps early in the season, and do not save seed from a plant that showed mosaic.
Thrips silver and streak the leaves and distort flowers, which shows up as poor pod set. Keeping the crop watered through flowering is most of the answer, since a stressed plant is the one that suffers.

Borers, and why picking over often helps
Pod borers are the pest most likely to cost you actual beans. Small moth caterpillars lay on the flowers or young pods, the larva bores in, and it eats the developing seed from the inside. From the outside you see a small dark entry hole and often a little frass around it; inside there is a hollowed seed or two and a caterpillar. By the time you find it in a pod, that pod is a loss.
The practical defense is the picking routine you are already doing. Walking the row every two or three days means you spot holed pods early and can take them off and destroy them before the caterpillar finishes and pupates in the soil to produce the next generation. Do not compost them. On a home-sized planting, that alone usually keeps the problem to a few percent of the crop.
Clearing the plants promptly at the end of the season matters for the same reason, as does the three-year rotation. Old bean debris left standing over winter shelters the next year's problem, and a bed that grows legumes every year accumulates both the borers and the soil-borne rots.
Slugs and snails go for seedlings and for any pod resting on damp soil, so propping sprawling branches up off the ground removes most of that damage.
- Inspect twice a week from first flower Look at flower clusters and young pods for entry holes and frass, and turn a few leaves to check the undersides for aphids and whitefly. Two minutes a visit finds problems while they are still small.
- Remove and destroy holed pods immediately Take the pod off the plant with the caterpillar inside and put it in the bin or a bucket of water. Dropping it on the soil simply releases the pest to pupate.
- Keep the canopy open Strip the lowest leaves and any crowded inward shoots once plants meet in the row. Air movement is the main control for mildew and leaf spot, and it makes inspection possible.
- Water at the base, in the morning Never overhead in the evening. Wet foliage overnight in warm humid weather is exactly the condition mildew and leaf spot want.
- Clear all debris at the end of the season Cut the plants at the base, remove the tops from the garden if there was disease, and leave the roots in the soil. Then keep legumes off that ground for three years.
Do not save seed from plants that showed yellow mosaic, leaf spot or heavy pod mold, and do not put that debris on a heap you will spread on the same bed. Both viruses and fungal spots carry over on seed and residue.
Mildew and rot in a humid finish
The failure that catches most gardeners out is not an insect. It is a humid, wet spell arriving during the weeks when pods should be drying on the plant. Powdery mildew coats the upper leaves in white dust and the plant shuts down early, leaf spot strips the foliage, and the pods themselves go gray and blotchy with the seed inside soft and moldy. Once a pod has molded it is not worth saving, and it is certainly not worth sprouting.
Prevention is structural rather than chemical: wide enough spacing, an open canopy, no overhead watering, and no watering at all once the pods start turning. In a reliably humid climate, a rain cover over the row with open ends during the ripening weeks makes a real difference. If a wet spell is forecast and a good number of pods are already dark, pick everything that has colored at all and finish drying it indoors, which is much the better outcome.
Soil-borne root and stem rot is the other wet-ground problem, and like the rots of every legume it has no cure once a plant is affected. Choose free-draining ground, do not enrich it with water-holding compost, raise the bed three or four inches (8 to 10 cm) if the soil is heavy, and keep to a three-year gap between legumes on the same spot.
The storage jar, and what to record
Bean weevils are the problem you discover weeks after you thought the crop was safely in. The adults lay on developing pods in the garden, the larvae feed inside the seed, and neat round exit holes appear in your jar of clean dry beans long after harvest. Holed beans will not sprout and the population multiplies happily in a warm cupboard. Freezing the sealed jar for a full week before it goes on the shelf kills the eggs and does not harm germination, and it is worth doing as a routine for every batch you save.
Record the date you first see any problem, what it was, which part of the row it was in, and what the weather had been doing the week before. Damp corners and shaded ends repeat themselves year after year. After two seasons the record will tell you whether your recurring trouble is drainage, crowding, or a sowing date that puts the ripening period into your wettest weather, and those three call for completely different fixes.
Note also which plants stayed clean. Saving seed only from the healthiest, most vigorous plants in the row is the cheapest disease control available to a home grower, and over several seasons it makes a visible difference to a self-pollinating crop like this one.
