Slugs and snails go straight for the crop
This is the one pest that reliably costs you buds. A myoga bed offers slugs everything they want: permanent deep shade, damp mulch, and a crop that sits at ground level. The damage shows as ragged holes chewed into the base or side of a bud, which then rots inward within days.
The fix is mostly environmental. Thin the mulch back over the crowns as bud season approaches, clear away the collapsed stems in autumn rather than leaving them as cover, and keep the immediate surroundings free of boards, pots and long grass where slugs shelter through the day.
Beyond that, check the bed after dark with a torch during the bud flush and remove what you find by hand, or ring the crowns with a barrier or bait suited to your garden. Two or three night patrols at the start of the flush do more good than continuous effort later, because you are removing the population before it settles into an easy food source.
Buds that rot before you get to them
Buds turning brown and soft at the base without any chewing damage is a moisture and air problem, not a pest. It happens when heavy mulch or matted debris sits directly on the crown, when the bed is watered overhead through the flush, or during a long spell of wet weather with no air movement through the clump.
Reduce the mulch over the crowns to half an inch (1 cm) of fine, open material, water at the base only, and thin the stems slightly if the clump is so dense that no air reaches the ground. Clear any rotted bud away rather than leaving it, since the soft tissue spreads the rot to neighbors touching it.
The other cause is simply time. A bud left past the point of opening softens and collapses on its own. If the rotten buds are also fully open, the problem is your harvest interval, not the growing conditions: check every two or three days rather than weekly.
Scorched, browning or rolled leaves
Leaf margins going pale then crisp brown is the classic sign of too much direct sun, and it usually appears on the side of the clump facing an afternoon gap in the canopy. The plant survives it but crops poorly. Shade the exposed side, or move the planting in the following dormant season.
Leaves rolling inward along their length without browning is water stress, and it is far more common in shade beds under trees than gardeners expect, because tree roots strip the soil dry. Check the soil an inch (2.5 cm) down before assuming a disease; if it is dry, the diagnosis is finished.
Wind damage looks different again: torn strips along the leaf and shredding at the tips, with the rest of the leaf still green and firm. That is a site problem, solved with shelter rather than with anything applied to the plant.
Rhizome rot and animals below ground
Rhizome rot is the one problem that can kill a clump outright. It shows as shoots that emerge weak and yellow, or fail to emerge at all, over a patch that cropped normally last year. Lift a section and the rhizome will be brown, soft and foul-smelling instead of firm and pale.
The cause is almost always winter waterlogging. Salvage what firm rhizome you can find at the edges of the affected area, replant it in a raised or better-drained part of the bed, and do not replant the same spot with myoga until the drainage is fixed.
Voles, mice and similar rodents will tunnel into a mulched shade bed and eat rhizome over winter. The tell is a clump that produces far fewer shoots than the year before with no rot present, and shallow runs visible when you pull back the mulch in spring. Pulling the mulch away from the crowns for the coldest part of winter makes the bed much less attractive to them.

When the clump simply stops producing
A clump that has cropped well for years and then goes quiet is usually not diseased. Old rhizome at the center of a dense patch exhausts itself, and all the active growth migrates to the outer ring. The pattern to look for is a bare, stem-free middle with a productive circle of growth around it.
The answer is division, not feeding. Lift the clump in the dormant season, discard the dark corky center, and replant the firm outer rhizome at proper spacing. Production comes back within two seasons.
Mottled or streaked leaves that persist year after year on the same plants point at virus in the rhizome stock instead. There is no treatment: remove those clumps entirely, never propagate from them, and start that section again from clean material taken well away from the affected ground.
In every case, the record is what makes the diagnosis quick. If you have shoot counts and bud totals for each part of the bed over several seasons, a decline is obvious in the numbers a full year before it is obvious to the eye, and you can divide before you lose a crop rather than after.
