A plant with very few pests
Set expectations before you start diagnosing. Nandina is one of the least troubled shrubs you can grow, and most of what people report as pest damage turns out to be a growing condition rather than an organism. Deer generally leave it alone, rabbits ignore it, and it has no equivalent of the beetle or borer that dominates the pest picture on many other shrubs.
The occasional real insect problems are scale on stressed plants in dry shade, showing as small brown or white bumps along the canes with sticky residue and sooty mold below, and whitefly in warm sheltered corners. Both are cosmetic on an established clump and usually resolve once the plant is watered properly and the congested old canes are removed. So when foliage looks wrong, check the soil, the drainage, the light and the season before you look for something to spray.
Yellowing leaves: three different causes
Yellow foliage is the most common complaint, and the pattern of the yellowing tells you which of three unrelated things you are looking at. Look at whether the leaf veins stay green, whether the oldest or newest leaves are affected, and whether the yellow is uniform or mottled.
Yellow leaf blades with veins staying distinctly green, worst on the newest growth at the cane tips, is iron chlorosis. It happens on alkaline soil where iron is present but locked up, and it is common in beds against a house foundation where builders' rubble or mortar has raised the pH. The fix is acidifying the root zone with an elemental sulfur product or a chelated iron feed, plus an annual mulch of composted pine bark or leaf mold. It is a repeating job, not a one-off cure.
Uniform pale yellowing across older leaves, with weak thin new canes, is straightforward nitrogen shortage, usually on a plant competing with tree roots or growing in a strip of poor soil. A single balanced feed in early spring and a proper mulch fixes it within a season.
Mottled yellow and green patterning that stays on affected canes year after year, sometimes with narrowed distorted leaflets, is a virus. There is no treatment. Cut the affected canes out at the base, clean your pruners with alcohol before moving to another plant, and do not propagate from that clump. A virused plant often lives for years looking merely odd rather than sick, so removal is a choice about appearance.

Wet feet and winter burn
Root rot is the failure that actually kills nandina, and it is almost always a drainage problem rather than a disease that arrives from outside. The signal is a single cane wilting and browning over a few days in summer while the rest of the clump looks fine, followed by another cane a fortnight later. Pull on the affected cane and it comes away easily with dark soft tissue at the base. Nothing you apply to the foliage will help. Stop watering, and if the site holds water after rain, lift and replant on a raised mound of improved soil in autumn.
Winter damage is a different story and looks far worse than it is. In cold weather the foliage of a plant in an exposed position goes brown and crisp at the edges, often on the windward side only, while the canes themselves stay perfectly alive. This is cold drying wind pulling moisture from evergreen leaves faster than frozen ground can replace it, not frost killing tissue.
The response is patience. Do not cut anything in late winter while the plant still looks dead, because a great deal of what looks finished pushes fresh growth once soil temperatures rise. Wait until new growth is clearly moving in late spring, then remove only the canes that are genuinely dead and leave the rest. A temporary windbreak screen on the exposed side does more for a plant in a bad position than any wrapping over the top.
The berries: the hazard that matters most
The bright red berry clusters are the reason many people grow the plant, and they carry two problems that are worth understanding before you decide to keep them.
The first is toxicity. Nandina fruit contains cyanogenic compounds, which release cyanide when the tissue is broken down in digestion. In practice this is not a hazard to a person walking past, and a single berry swallowed by accident is not a poisoning event. It matters for birds. Berries persist on the plant right through winter, which means they are available at exactly the time other food has run out, and there are documented cases of flocking birds that gorge on large quantities of nandina fruit in one sitting dying from it. Cedar waxwings, which feed in flocks and strip a fruiting plant in a single visit, are the birds most often involved. Dogs and cats that chew the fruit can also be affected, and any suspected ingestion by a pet is a call to a vet rather than a wait-and-see.
The second is spread. Birds that eat the fruit and survive disperse the seed, and in parts of the southeastern United States nandina has escaped cultivation and established in woodland where it displaces native understorey plants. Several jurisdictions there list it as invasive, and some no longer permit its sale.
The practical response to both problems is the same and it is easy. Cut the fruit clusters off. Take them once the berries have colored but before they soften and become attractive to birds, cutting each cluster back to the first leaf below it. Removing the fruit costs you nothing but the winter color, does not harm the plant, and settles both the bird risk and the seeding risk at once. Where nandina is listed as invasive locally, treat this as required rather than optional.
Note the week the berries color up each year, and the week you cut them off. Getting the removal in before the birds start feeding is a matter of ten days either way, and last year's dates are far more reliable than a guess.
When to give up on a plant
Very few nandina problems justify removing the whole clump, because the plant regenerates from the root crown and a hard cut to the ground in late winter resets almost anything wrong with the top growth. Scorch, leaf spot, scale, congestion and years of bad shearing all disappear with one renovation cut.
The two situations that do not recover are root rot on a site that stays wet, and a heavily virused plant. For the first, the plant is not the problem and moving it is the only fix. For the second, the virus is systemic and a cut-back plant regrows carrying it.
The third reason to remove a plant has nothing to do with its health. If you garden where nandina is listed as invasive and you are not willing to keep on top of the berry removal every single year, taking it out and planting something else is the honest decision. A plant that fruits unattended for a few seasons puts seed into woodland you will never visit.
