Cluster Mallow Problems: Rust, Aphids, Caterpillars and Tough Leaves

Cluster mallow is close to trouble-free apart from one thing: mallow rust. Learn to spot the orange pustules underneath the leaves early, and deal with seedling pests before they thin your row.

The seedling stage is the vulnerable one

A mature cluster mallow shrugs off most things. A seedling does not, and almost every complete failure of a row happens in the first three weeks. Slugs take whole seedlings overnight in damp weather, flea beetles shot-hole the first true leaves in dry weather, and birds pull up the tiny plants for no obvious reason at all.

The most effective single measure is a lightweight insect mesh laid over the row from the day you sow until plants are six inches (15 cm) tall. It handles flea beetles, birds and much of the caterpillar pressure at a stroke, and it holds a little extra warmth, which this crop wants anyway.

Sow a few more seeds than you need so that losses do not open permanent gaps. Gaps in a row of cluster mallow are worse than they look, because the neighboring plants sprawl into them and you lose the airflow that keeps rust down.

Mallow rust, the one disease that matters

Rust is the characteristic disease of this whole plant family, and it is the thing most likely to end your row early. It starts as small pale yellow spots on the upper surface of the lowest leaves, with raised orange-brown pustules directly beneath them. Later the pustules darken, the spots merge, and the leaf yellows and drops. It moves upward through the plant and sideways along a crowded row.

It is favored by exactly the conditions a cut-and-come-again bed creates: dense low growth, damp mulch, leaves that stay wet overnight. Manage it culturally rather than reactively. Strip the bottom leaves so there is a clear gap between soil and canopy, keep the spacing you thinned to, water at the base in the morning, and pick every ten to fourteen days so the canopy never gets dense.

Once you see it, remove affected leaves at every harvest round and take them off the plot rather than composting them. If it is running through the plant faster than you can pick it off, cut that plant back by half, feed it, and let it regrow clean. At the end of the season clear every scrap of the crop away, and do not grow mallow-family plants in the same ground for two or three years.

Ornamental mallows and hollyhocks nearby are a reservoir for the same rust. If they are infected, either treat them or accept that your row will need harder culling and closer spacing discipline.

Aphids, mites and things that eat holes

Aphids colonise the soft growing tips, which is precisely the part you eat. They arrive in clusters in the axils and on the undersides of the newest leaves. Because the tips are on a ten-to-fourteen-day cutting cycle anyway, the simplest control is to cut and remove the infested tips rather than to spray something you will be eating a week later. A strong jet of water in the morning handles the rest, repeated for three days.

Spider mites appear in hot, dry, sheltered spots. The signs are fine stippling on the upper leaf surface, a dusty gray cast to the plant, and webbing in the axils. They are a symptom of drought stress as much as anything: increase watering, raise humidity around the plant with morning overhead rinses on the undersides of leaves, and cut out the worst growth.

Caterpillars, particularly leaf-rolling species, are the other regular visitor. You will see leaves stuck together with silk, or ragged holes with dark pellets nearby. On a crop this size, hand-picking works. Open the rolled leaf, remove the occupant, and check the plant again in three days. Mesh over the row stops most egg-laying in the first place.

Avoid reaching for sprays on a crop you cut every ten days. Almost everything that troubles cluster mallow is either solved by cutting the affected growth off and eating what is left, or by fixing the water.

Tough leaves, bolting and knowing when it is over

Most complaints about this crop are not pests at all. Leathery leaves mean harvest was late or the plant was dry. Stringy stems mean you are cutting too low, into wood rather than into soft growth. A plant that has gone tall and thin with small stiff leaves has run to flower, and the fix is a hard cut-back and a feed, or a fresh sowing if there is enough warm weather left.

Cold ends the crop. A light frost is survivable and often sweetens the leaves slightly; the plant keeps working through a run of chilly nights. A hard freeze blackens the growing tips and the plant does not recover. Once tips are damaged, cut what leaf is still good, then clear the bed.

Clearing properly is the last pest-control job of the year. Take the stems off the plot rather than turning them in, remove any fruits you find so seed does not shed, and note where the row was. Rust overwinters on debris, and moving the crop next season is more effective than anything you can spray on it.
