Check the growing tip and the leaf undersides
Almost everything that troubles okra shows up first in one of two places: the soft growing tip at the top of the stem, or the underside of the leaves. A ten second look at both, each time you pick, catches the great majority of problems while they are still a nuisance rather than a loss.
That habit matters more on okra than on most crops because the plant is tall and the tip ends up above eye level by midsummer. Pull the top of the stem down towards you and look at it directly. Problems that start out of sight get large before you notice them.

Aphids: the everyday one
Aphids colonise the soft tip and the undersides of young leaves, and on okra they build up fast because the plant is producing new soft growth continuously all summer. The first sign is usually stickiness on the tip and leaves that curl inwards, followed by black sooty mold growing on the honeydew.
A firm jet of water aimed up under the leaves, repeated every three or four days for a fortnight, deals with most infestations without anything else. Ladybird larvae and hoverfly larvae find okra aphids readily, so hold off on anything broad spectrum which would remove them too.
If leaves are very large, dark and soft, the aphids are a symptom. Over generous nitrogen produces exactly the lush growth aphids multiply on, and cutting back the feeding does more than any spray.
Sooty mold itself does no direct harm, but a thick film blocks light. Once the aphids are gone, wipe the worst leaves or simply remove them as part of the routine leaf stripping.
Shield bugs, leaf footed bugs and misshapen pods
If your pods come out twisted, bumpy or with hard sunken spots, sucking bugs are the usual explanation rather than any disease. They feed through the pod wall while it is developing, and the damage only becomes visible as the pod expands around the feeding sites.
They are sluggish in the cool of early morning, which is the time to hand pick them into a jar of soapy water. Doing that daily for a week during a build up genuinely works. They breed up in rank weedy ground and overwinter in debris, so keeping the edges of the plot cut and clearing spent crops promptly is the real control.
Do not confuse this with poor pollination. Okra is self fertile and sets reliably; a run of deformed pods on an otherwise healthy plant is a pest signature, not a pollination failure.
Borers in the pods
Caterpillars of several moths chew into developing pods, leaving a small round entry hole with a little sawdust like frass around it. Once one is inside, nothing sprayed on the outside will reach it, and the pod is finished.
The control is picking. Daily harvesting removes pods before the caterpillar has time to develop inside them, which is one more argument for the everyday routine. Cut out and remove any pod with an entry hole rather than composting it on the spot, because the caterpillar simply completes its cycle in the heap.
Wilt and nematodes: the ones you cannot fix
Soil borne wilts enter through the roots and block the water carrying tissue. The signature is one side or one branch of the plant wilting on a hot afternoon and not recovering by morning, while the rest of the plant looks normal for another week. Slice the stem near the base and you will find a brown ring or brown streaks in the wood. There is no treatment.
Root knot nematodes stunt the plant, cause pale leaves and a general lack of vigor that no amount of feeding fixes, and are confirmed by pulling a plant and finding hard knobbly swellings all along the roots. Okra is very susceptible to them.
For both, the response is the same and it is about next year rather than this one. Pull the plant, take it off the plot, mark the position, and do not grow okra or any related crop in that spot for at least three seasons. Rotating with grasses or cereals and keeping the ground weed free through the off season both reduce nematode numbers.
Wilting that recovers overnight is not wilt disease. Okra wilts dramatically in full afternoon sun as a normal water saving response. Judge every wilt by what the plant looks like at dawn.
Problems that are not pests at all
Flower buds turning yellow and dropping before they open is the most commonly misdiagnosed okra symptom. It is almost always drought at flowering, a sudden cold spell, or over generous nitrogen, in that order of likelihood. Look at your watering before you look for an insect.
Yellowing that starts on the oldest lowest leaves and works up is usually nitrogen running out on a heavily cropping plant, and a side dressing fixes it in a fortnight. Yellowing that starts on the new growth at the top is more likely poor drainage or a root problem, and calls for a look at the base of the plant.
Record the first sighting, every time
The single most valuable pest record is the date you first saw each problem, and where in the bed it was. Pests arrive at strikingly consistent times relative to the season, and after two years of notes you will know to start checking a fortnight before the aphids normally appear rather than a fortnight after.
Mark the exact position of any plant you removed for wilt or nematodes. That mark is the only thing that will stop you planting okra back into the same square of ground in three years time, by which point you will certainly have forgotten.
